A Ground-DOG Day Prediction!

Today was Groundhog Day! The day when thousands of revelers converged on the small Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney to hear a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil predict the weather! Apparently the day grew out of a mainly German superstition that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow February 2--the Christian holiday of Candlemas--winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will be early.

Having a lot of confidence in this scientific method for predicting the weather, but being unable to make it to Punxsutawney, we decided to see for ourselves if spring would come early or late. However, our resident groundhogs are all in hibernation right now. So, we opted to use the next best thing for our own Ground-DOG Day prediction, the dogs. When we had them out this morning, we tried in several different places to see if one of them would cast a shadow. No matter what they did, there was no shadow!! So it was official, spring will come early!!!

However, as we looked out our backdoor tonight it was confirmed that our dogs and Punxsutawney Phil are just as good of weathermen as the ones with two legs--It is definitely NOT looking like an early spring! Oh well...

    This post made me laugh---I love the ground-dog day!! I also like their prediction much better than Phil's. An early Spring for me. I think those golden groundhogs know what they are talking about. Enjoy your snow while it lasts---SPRING is on the way :)

    When I got up on Groundhog Day, I was sure that spring was coming early because the sun stayed behind a bank of clouds...until mid-afternoon. It peeked out for just an hour or two, long enough for any ole ground hog or dog to see a shadow. Durn-it! Well, I'm betting on the dogs not the hogs....spring will come right on time!

    I'm laughing out loud here ! Ground dog day !

    We used to put felt antlers on Sam at Christmas & call him rein-dog.

    I only know about groundhog day because of the film which I've seen again - and again !

    I love ground hog day!!
    We use to have Wiarton Willy as the official ground hog but he died and they try to cover it up. There was a scandal ( I'm not joking) anyway now this day just makes me laugh.
    I think your dogs have as much chance as the poor ground hog.
    Plus they are so much more enjoyable to watch

    We love ground hog day, cause it marks a spot on the calender that
    "we have made it" through maybe some of the harshest weather, and at least in 6 weeks spring might appear. We have little brave plants poking their heads out of the ground.

    Kim, this post made me smile from ear to ear. Oddly enough, it is a german superstition, but no one ever talks about here nowadays! So Ground Hog day slipped past me here without a minute's thought. Thank goodness for blogger and posts about P.Phil to remind me! Not looking very much like an early spring here either, not with all the snow we still have! But perhaps there is hope, if it was such a cold winter, we might be in for a nice warm spring and summer. One can hope!! ~~ Debby

    we like to catch em and then Momma chases us around the property so we don't eat them.
