A Little Fish Story

It's been a long couple of days. I would really like to thank everyone for your positive thoughts, comments and support on "Sam's Saga." It really means a lot to have your input and insight on this issue. I'm meeting with the family on Sunday, and will let you know what happens.

I really needed some "alone time" today and with our internet connection having problems I thought I'd just leave Carl to do his own thing and take Rudi for a drive. We drove over to Harpers Ferry West Virginia which is about 40 minutes from where we live and is situated on the banks of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. Harpers Ferry is best known for John Brown's raid on the Armory in 1859 which brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery. As you can see, it's really a beautiful place, especially in the summer, we love to spend time there!

I remembered that we needed some bird food so I stopped by the "Petco" in the next town over called Charles Town. I took Rudi inside with me. She's usually pretty good when I take her places, but Rudi being Rudi, she bores easily and starts to act up--She didn't disappoint. When I was standing in line to check out, I noticed a well dressed older couple standing in back of me with a bag of two goldfish. Rudi was starting to get restless and started playfully barking at the man holding the fish who in return gave me a stern look of disapproval. As I was paying, I felt Rudi jump up and I turned around just in time to see that the bag that held the goldfish had a hole in it and there was water everywhere! I was given a look of disbelief and astonishment that was accompanied by something said by the couple and the cashier that I can't even remember--I quickly finished paying and Rudi and I made a quick retreat over the border and back to Virginia.

  1. Hi Kim,
Oh that story is toooo funny. Kind of like when I used to take my son shopping when he was a little boy. Most of the time he was very good until he became bored and the misbehaving would begin. I would give his hand a firm squeeze in an effort to remind him to behave. His response in a loud voice "Oh mommy you are hurting my hand" With disapproving looks following me out of the store I too would hurry away :) Poor Rudi just wanted a closer look at those pretty fish :)
    Have a great Sunday
    Mimi~
PS I have been thinking about you and Sam since I first read your post. I didn't leave a comment because I just didn't know what to say. I am sorry that you have to make such a hard decision. I really don't know what I would do. I makes it extra hard because the family attends your church. It would be so much easier to tell them no if they were someone you didn't really know. That was my first thought--to just say Sam is happy with you and he is staying. I hope all goes well with your meeting. I look forward to the update :)

  3. Oh,no!! Had to laugh as I've had very similar embarrasing experiences with Bella. One time we were having a drink in a pub and a man came in and put his shopping basket down on the floor.Next thing we know Bella is holding a baguette from the basket in her mouth!!

  4. Oh how funny !
I had an awful time with Dillon yesterday - we'd had a lovely long walk with two friends & their dogs but when it was time to go he wouldn't come back to me. He found a family on the beach throwing stones into the sea & he was having fun & they were laughing.
I got so mad as they could see I was trying to get him back.
After ages I got him & I' afraid he was walloped & shouted at infront of everyone on the sea front. My friends were so embarrassed !

Thanks for your kind words about Rosie - we were sad to leave her in Spain but it wasn't right to Quaranteen her she was labrador/ alsation & would have gone mad in kennels for six months.

Good luck with your decision about Sam

  5. If it isn't your kids then it's your dogs! No matter how hard you try to keep them under "control", eventually they will give you a memory :-)
I love Harper's Ferry! History, hiking, the river, and there will be music again at the Hilltop House once it's done renovations.
Hope you had a great day to defrag..

  7. I'm sure everyone at the "scene" wasn't laughing but you can't help but laugh. And all those people should be laughing too...for gosh sakes, it's a Petco! Where the animals rule!
I absolutely love Virginia history and the beautiful countryside. Our daughter lived in Abingdon and it was breathtaking around there. I loved all the stories.

  10. Ok, the fish were wiggling around, right? That is WAY too tempting if you ask me :) Rudy sounds like he has some puppy left in him! At least he didn't eat them. Can you imagine their faces if he had? LOL.

  12. Dear Mom and Dad,
Unless Virginia law is different from that of most states, you do not need a written agreement with Sam's former "family" to be his owner as a matter of law. Take a look at any number of good law sites including lawyer.com for contract basics and/or call a local firm and ask for pro bono advice. Tons of us are Golden lovers!

  13. This story made my day.
I love seeing the pictures you take.
My Grandfather and Grandmother settled in Salisbury Maryland and we loved to visit them. The beaches and pubs they took us to will last a lifetime in memories.
I just love the way everyone decorated for Easter hanging the plastic eggs from the trees. So festive and colorful.
We are all sitting on pins and needles as to the out come of Sam.
Big hugs your way for a difficult situation.
