Be Glad You're NOT Me!

What a week I'm already having!  Yesterday first thing in the morning, our Internet connection wasn't working.  Okay I thought, I'll be fine without an Internet and blogging fix to start off the day.  So, I went to the fridge for my other fix, which is a Diet Coke, and we were out--How could I let that happen?!  Added to that, for some reason the local channels weren't coming in via the satellite, so there would be no news-fix for me either.  I tried to not let these bumps in my morning routine get to me because it would just give me more time to spend with the dogs and getting ready for work.  As I kept doing things around the house, I noticed that the time seemed to be dragging.  I had time to do things like take a few pictures and even a load of laundry.  I later realized that there was a reason for that, my watch was practically stopped, and I was really running behind! I managed to get to work on time, but not before 2 near collisions and breaking what I know were several traffic laws.

Once at the office I settled into the schedule.  I had noticed earlier in the morning that my face was starting to itch, just a little.  I thought it was perhaps because of a new box of masks that I had--I was wrong.  A look in the mirror confirmed that I had the beginning of poison ivy, AGAIN--How could this happen?  I've been so careful since my run in with it this past summer and I really thought I knew what it looked like.  Apparently not.  Once safely home last evening, with my restored internet connection, I looked up "fall Poison Ivy."  Did you know that Poison Ivy leaves turn a vivid red color in the fall?  I didn't--It's actually one of the first plants to change, and it just happens to also be one of the pretty red leaves I collected on Sunday and had dried in between sheets of wax-paper!  I know what you're thinking, believe me, I'm thinking it too--But how can this touch of 'beauty' in the fall landscape cause all this misery?

  1. When it rains it pours doesn't it? Poison Ivy is the WORST! I had it a couple of summers ago on my arms, hands, legs and even my stomach! Pure torture to say the least.

  2. Oops!! Poison-Ivy is one of the grandest of the reds when Fall comes - I always watch for the one that runs up the trees to turn. Hope you recover fast!

Thanks for voting for Stuart - he's in 2nd place now!

  3. So I read your post title and thought: "aw, it couldn't be that bad". OK, I was wrong. The poison Ivy would have put me over the edge. Huge bummer Kim. Shake it off, hug the dogs and go to be early. Paws crossed tomorrow will be better.

  4. Oh, Kim, you poor thing! I'm so sorry about the poison ivy. I've never had the pleasure (knock on wood.) I am terribly allergic to most everything, so I'm sure I would have quite the time with it. Hope your day is going better today, dear.

  9. I about screamed when I saw this picture! It's EVIL...pure EVIL! Poison Ivy/Oak should be a weapon against our enemies. They'd be too busy scratching to shoot or bomb us!

I hope you recover soon from your Poison Ivy attack - I don't think we have a problem with that in the UK. Sure looks pretty though!

  13. Oh dear, Kim! Such a bundle of stuff going awry all at once! I did know that poison (out here) oak gets pretty red leaves in the fall and is at least as dangerous if not more when they turn. Soooo sorry for you ouch! I guess what's bad is that if I let the dogs offleash on some wide dirt road trails, and they manage to get into it, of course THEY don't get it, but when I rub their furs, hubby and I do arggghhhh! We haven't gone out on those roads this fall... so far, so good. Hope you are feeling a bit better now.

  14. Oh no, Kim! You poor thing. Yup, poison Ivy turns very red in the Autumn. In the Big Meadow, it was the first thing to turn. I hope that it is very isolated, and soon gone.

  16. Hey Kim, I pray your day today was much better~I know a bit of how you feel. Last night I noticed my Reggie smelled really odd(reminded me of my Sadie before she passed)and so I was concerned. Then he couldn't settle during the night and was restless; that kept me awake wondering if his old body was shutting down and would I need to make a decision today. So I was awake til 2:00am. When Sadie got sick on Christmas, we had to drive through a snow storm to an emergency clinic(can you say $$$)on Christmas night and my hubby was so mad/frustrated. So then today I was worrying that we might face another added expense but Reggie seems fine now. My girlfriend suggested it might be his anal glands infected; I never thought of that. So besides being so tired I was pretty stressed all day. He seems fine now, eating and having energy. I may just try to have a vet tech expel his glands for me. Sorry I'm sharing all this but figure you understand.
I'm sorry about the poison ivy too.
    Have a restful evening.
    Hugs, Noreen

  17. Oh boy! What a morning!! That poison ivy is awful. It's not fair that you got it TWICE in one season!!

  18. What a day! But tomorrow will be better! ♥
Poison Ivy is just horrid! My first encounter was when we moved to Louisiana. Our son had done some brush clearing and little did we know that there were p.i. vines under the trees. Poor guy was miserable.
I will occasionally get it now from one of my cats. Animals can brush up against the vines, get the oil on their fur and then transfer the oil (which is what causes the reaction) to a person.
    Just remember this little jingle...Leaves of Three, Let it be! {poison ivy has only three leaves}

  19. Sounds like your happiness project was being tested but you really handled it all very well. I didn't know poison ivy was so pretty in the fall. I hope you get over the itch soon.--Inger

  21. Oh, good heavens, you certainly have had a time of it!!! We all have days when everything seems to be working against us and we wish we had just stayed in bed, but yours seems to top them all!!! As for the Poison Ivy, don't feel bad. My grandma was exceptionally prone to it and very seldom went a season without getting it at least once if not twice while out playing golf.

  22. I would have made the same mistake - I know nothing about poison ivy and its wicked ways!

  23. Oh No Kim---I must say that I'm sure I would have made the same mistake. I don't remember ever learning that poison ivy leaves turn such a pretty color in the Fall. I sure hope things get better soon.

  25. I just love the fact that you were pressing the poison ivy! LOL.. that sounds like something I would do!

Hang in there lady. We ALL have days like this!

  26. Rats! Think about it this way: you got all the bumps in the road over with in one day, which means the days ahead will be sunny!

  27. Oh, good LORD! I think I would have crawled back in bed after the Internet and no diet coke (in my case it's capuccino)! You poor thing. I don't know how I didn't see your post until tonight but I sure hope that you're feeling better and life is being a little (LOT) kinder to you now...

  28. Oh Kim
You must be in miserys right now!
What did you put on to help the burning and itching?
I also collect leaves and place then between wax paper and iron them! Its quite fun, but not with the poison ones, even though they are the prettiest.
I know what you mean. When it rains it pours and the last thing we want to see is a roof leaking!
Go stock up on diet coke- you just never know

  31. Oh my, what a day. I hope that poison ivy rash is improving... Having it on your face must be the worst.

  32. Well, I did not know that about poison ivy. We have TONS of it on our retirement property in Louisiana. I think there it just turns yellow. I always just assume if it has 3 leaves, it's poison ivy. Even if it's not, lol. And then I spray it with poison since we have no animals or goats to eat it.
We're slowly getting it eradicated, but it is not easy.
    Hope you're feeling better soon!

  39. LOL. Well, at least things should get better from that wonderful start!

Hope the poison ivy passes quickly... I've had several bouts of it this summer, after living the first 52 years of my life without reacting to it!

  40. So you brought home a nice bouquet of Poison Ivy. Not good. Sorry you're feeling itchy and out of sorts. Hope it goes away quickly.

  41. I just popped over from el vigilante's site (LOVE your beautiful pups!) When I saw this post on poison ivy, I had to comment in hopes to be of help.

Now that you've got a bad case of it, it's too late to try to wash up from exposure, but next time you think you've gotten into it, wash with a 'soap' called Tecnu. It's the only thing that stops the ivy oil from spreading. If you can't find it in your local stores, check at the feed store.

Also, what absolutely saved my life from time after time of serious poison ivy outbreaks was an herb someone told me to try. Get it at Whole Foods or a similar place - Rhus Tox - it's either in pill form or pellet form. I've been told it's an extract from the poison ivy plants themselves, and if taken regularly for a while, your body will build up an immunity to exposure. I can certainly attest that it works wonders! I used to get poison ivy terribly (within a day of exposure I'd have horrible sores on my arms and nothing would work except for a cortisone shot from the doc and prescription creams). After I took Rhus Tox for about 2 weeks, then only occasionally, I can honestly say I've had only tiny, minor outbreaks that are easily controlled with cream. And I traipse thru the woods and pond area riddled w/ poison ivy all the time!!! In shorts and slip on shoes even! (I know I'm tempting fate but this stuff has saved me!

Sorry to be so wordy, but I just felt compelled to pass these 2 products along to you. They've saved my everyday life!

    Hope you're getting better!

  42. I don't think we have it here... However, I suffer from the same thing when it comes to fig trees and their fine hairs....
