Last Time--I Promise!?

~Sheba~
I know, I know, I'm sounding like a broken record with my constant and never-ending posts about my nemesis, the dreaded brown marmarated stink bug.  Tonight however, I went to a whole new level when I attended a 'stink bug lecture' given by our congressman, Frank Wolf. Two experts spoke about the ongoing research and damage (30+ million dollars to apple growers alone) they've caused to agricultural crops in the mid-Atlantic region.

Interesting at least to me, is that the Virginia grape growers face the prospect of harvesting the bugs along with the cabernet and chardonnay and putting them through the crusher – and then the risk of stink bug aroma is in what had been a fine wine -- It takes as little as 5 stink bugs in one ton of grapes to have this occur.

They have no 'natural' predator in the States so there is no 'silver bullet' that will kill them.  If you think you've sprayed something on one and killed it, you may not have, it can fully recover in as much as 7 days.  Remind me to check the ones I thought were dead.

By mid September, we will have 2 more generations of them.  By mid September, I may be posting from a padded room, that hopefully is stink-bug free...

Okay, I'm done now, I won't bring them up again.  At least I'll try not too.  I hope your week is off to a good start.  Sorry I wasn't able to stop by your blogs today, but I'll make time to see what you're up to on Tuesday!

  3. kim that is interesting! i had no clue they were detrimental to crops...i too have them all over the house. i don't kill them since i don't want the stink but gently wrap them up and ping them off the wrap as they like to stick and not leave...are they harmful to other crops? i guess i better start to research. i don't see them much down at the barn which is strange. but a few have made their way into the tack room but nothing like the house...they die and i find them hiding under a railing or a hidden area...yuck!

  4. oh, i think you need to train those precious pooches to erradicate those stink bugs! sadly, though, they'd probably smush them and that wouldn't be pretty.

wow. 5 stink bugs to a ton of grapes and it's ruined!? they might rival the cockroach!

  6. Maybe they could do what they do with mosquitoes (?) --- release sterile ones so they can mate without creating more stinkbugs. Good luck!

  7. OMG! You have the most delightful way of complaining. ;-) On the other hand, those suckers really do sound like a plight! PLEASE keep us posted...

  8. That is a serious problem. I don't blame you for writing about it. The grape thing has to be so discouraging to the growers.

    Great photo of the dogs.

  10. Just reading this made me get chill bumps all over - they are as bad or worse than the stinkin' ladybugs (who don't smell very ladylike). I think it's too cold for them here in the mountains - at least I hope so.

  12. Great deck photos of the dogs. I love Sheba's head tilt!

Yes, you've reached a whole new level - now you're attending lectures about stink bugs! Have you prepared the padded room? I bet that the dogs would love it. They could bounce off the walls as they play!

Seriously, I hope that your stink bug problem stays under control.

  14. Sounds like the wascally asian lady beetles we have in summer. No known enemies and the birds will not eat them.

Good luck on getting your stinky bugs eradicated. Blech!

  18. Kim,
I think it's fascinating; NOT that you have them but because I'd never heard of them before. I mean, I have but not their extreme and harsh infestation. UGH...write as often as you need to voice your frustration!

I love that last picture of the dogs...oh my, how sweet! It makes me want to go home and hug Hurricane!

  19. I say it's your blog and you can write about stink bugs all you like - I'll keep coming back for your humour and warmth and interesting stories, with or without stink bugs! (And, personally, I find the stink bug stories fascinating in a creepy, grossed-out kind of way...)

  20. Congressmen and stink bugs? Are they not one and the same?

  21. All bugs=ick in my books!!! Smelly ones just make it that much worse. I don't think we have them in Canada or if we do, they don't seem to causing nearly as much trouble as down your way!

I love Sheba in these photos!

  22. I've gotten an education from you. I didn't realize they were such a problem.

I need a count. I've lost track of how many pooches you share your home with. Some have come and others have gone and I haven't kept track of the total.

  23. H Kim,
We have stink bugs too!! I hate them too!!! We take a pair if pliers to them! We keep a pair just for them. It smells bad but that is OK b/c we killed them!! They do a lot of garden damage so if we find one he gets dead real fast!!
