The Arrival of a Girl Named Reggie

We have a new addition at least for now, that arrived on Monday.  At the beginning of June I was asked by the rescue if I would consider taking a 13 year old senior girl named Reggie. At the time, Hamlet was doing okay, and after really thinking about it I agreed. Because of some 'issues' and because she was 6+ hours away, it took some doing to bring her in this direction.  I was contacted on Sunday and told that everything had been arranged and she was on her way to me.  With everything that has been going on, I didn't think it was such a good idea for her to come here.  But with no place for her to go I agreed to take Reggie and see how it went.  I know that with Rudi not feeling well and the puppy arriving in a few days, the timing for this gal to become part of our household is not the best.  I think that she needs to perhaps go to another foster home.

Reggie was confiscated from her owner by Animal Control in the county where she lived because she was found lying on her owner’s porch with a ruptured dinner plate sized mass on her back that was infected with 'fly larva.'  Other sores on her body were infected as well, and understandably she was not feeling well and was having problems walking.  The owner was charged with animal cruelty and neglect and
had to surrender Reggie.  While the case is pending, the judge is NOT tolerant of animal abuse and neglect and they most definitely will be held accountable for their actions--Thank-goodness!!   Reggie has had the surgery to remove the mass.   Because of the condition of her coat and the other sores, she had to be shaved down to the skin.  She has a large mammory tumor but the vet felt it was too close to her heart to risk removing it. She is also thought to be in the early stages of heart failure.

Reggie gets along nicely with our crew who don't mind her at all because they are seasoned veterans with dogs coming and going from our household.  Rudi is also un-phased by her and ignores her.  Reggie does seem a bit bewildered by what's happened to her.  I don't think she understood my taking her on a walk with us yesterday morning.  She was tenative and nervous the whole time and kept looking back towards the house.  When we let her into the backyard she hurries back onto the porch and stands with her head pushed into the door to be let back inside.  She is following us everywhere and I don't think her tail has stopped wagging.  I think she's grateful and happy...Yes, there is no question about it, she's a sweet old girl!  But as I mentioned, the timing of her arrival is not the best and she may have to use her charm to win a place in someone else's heart besides mine, which she has already done.

  6. Kim, you are the best! As I was reading your post today, it occurred to me that you are proving a service to animals that elderly humans also need....assisted living. Reggie looks pretty and happy. She will get used to her new home over time and will know the love that all the others get, too.

  9. Oh Kim is so precious and I have a feeling she will be featured on your blog in the months to come....just saying!
How can people be so uncaring and cruel.....I go without needed things to provide for my rescue cats, they always come first!
I know you will choose the best circumstance for Reggie, but call me biased, I can't see anything better than you and your home to heal a dog's neglected heart!
Much love to you, Rudi and the crew!

  11. First: A courtly bow to your caring and generosity for taking Reggie in. Grateful may be an understatement! I hope she can find a furever home that she more than deserves after all she has been through.

Second: How can a human being be so neglectful to the point of injury to such a sweet dog? I am appalled. Shame on them. I hope they throw the book and the library at them.

  18. Maybe there was a reason she came to you right now. She obviously needs your healing heart, but, maybe, you need the healing that she, who can still love after being through such horror, has some healing to offer you.

  19. Reggie needed someone and you offered you home and she stole your heart.
Kim, you are an Angel, don't have any idea how you do all this but please keep being you.

  20. Kim, You are simply amazing~it would be so very easy to have said no after all you've gone through and all that is happening with Rudi but what a gal. You've got lots of jewels in heaven. I still can't believe you've got a puppy coming too. Wow, you are my hero.

  22. I'm a firm believer in "things happen for a reason". I wouldn't be so quick to send her on her way.

This girl is already responding to your love. God knows, she's not had any.

Take your time before you think this is a bad time. It just may not be.

  26. What a life she had! That poor old girl. But I am glad to know she was rescued & that her previous owner is arrested & will be prosecuted!! She probably has never been properly socialized in the outside world. Her owner probably has never brought her for walks, whatsoever. She has such a sweet face. Hopefully someone who is as caring & devoted as you will adopt her. She could make a wonderful pet for a senior citizen.

  27. She looks like a sweet old girl and if I thought my adult Scotties would tolerate her, I'd say bring her South with you, but I know they wouldn't. It's a shame people let their dogs get into such deplorable condition. It's like they don't realize that when they take a puppy that it might live 15 years and it might have some aging problems - they think it will be that cute puppy forever. They just don't think.

I have a friend, God bless her soul, who has had 2 dogs in the past 15 years and has given them both good homes until they no longer fit her lifestyle and then she finds good homes for them. I always tell her that I don't know what she's thinking when she gets a dog - it's a lifetime commitment and I think she should never, ever have another one.

Gotta stop now - see you Friday.

  30. oh my god. i'm sorry. but some people just need to be shot in the kneecaps. i'm sure that abusive idiot will find a way to get another animal. they always do. ok... now the venting's over...
you are simply an angel. and carl too.
please let reggie stay. you may be the only love and stability she's ever known in her life.
she and the puppy may fall instantly in love. and she'll have a chance to heal.
    god bless you darling kim.

  37. I had to come back and tell you how stylish I think that Reggie looks with her shaved leggies - I'm sure all of your Golden friends are booing me right this moment, but I think they are very cute. But I'm going to try it on my Scotties even if their legs are only an inch long.

  38. People who abuse their animals should be abused!! I LOATHE them. But I am happy for now that she's found a home, temporary or not!...:)JP

At the very least we know that Reggie is safe and feeling Golden pines love.

  41. Reggie is going to live out her life surrounded by your love. You do so much for these seniors, Kim, and although I don't know how you do it, you do. I can't imagine Momma taking in seniors because just thinking about doggies dying makes her cry. Thank you for taking care of Reggie and the other. I am sending healing vibes to all of them. May they be pain free all the days of their lives.

  42. Well, when it rains, it pours! Poor Reggie and her timing. I can totally understand why another foster might be a better idea.

There's something about Miss Reggie that appears to be quite endearing. I'll never understand how anyone can abuse an animal, particularly an oldie. Glad she's out of that situation and on the mend.

    Take care. :)

  43. Reggie is definitely in a good home now. I chuckly to myself whenever I think of that new puppy coming into your family. The old Goldens won't know what hit them. LOL You may not either. I know that our puppy has changed the whole atmosphere of our once peaceful home.

  44. Kim, you have a heart as big as all outdoors! So many reasons against taking in Reggie and only one for bringing her in...she desperately needed you. I do hope there is a family out there who needs Reggie but for now I'm glad she is with you.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Kim,

You really do have a golden heart. I'm so glad Reggie is somewhere her tail wags, as I know however long she is with you (and in the next loving home you help find for her) she can now be happy.

  49. Ah, dear sweet Reggie. How could they be so vile to her......?

However long Reggie is with you, it will be wonderful for her. Some tender love and the company of you and other dogs will reassure her that everything is going to be ok.

Love to you, Rudi, Reggie and the rest of the gang.

I think she needs you and perhaps you need her as well.

She certainly is a sweetie and so glad she has wedged herself into your heart, but then again, I had no doubt she would!
