Off to the Dentist!

Socialization as you know is really important for any puppy.  And since we are gone from home 2-3 days a week, I've been trying to find a day care for Todd during those times.  However I'm running into an unexpected problem in that while he has 'age appropriate vaccines' he is still missing a couple like rabies, which he is not yet old enough for, and bordetella.  The daycare that I really wanted to take him to  allowed puppies to come without their rabies and 4th distemper vaccine.  But 2 weeks ago they changed their requirements and now all dogs regardless of age must have ALL vaccines and must be immunized for canine influenza, which I won't give him--I learned from an 'insider' that they'd had a couple of dogs there that had it, so this was why it was added to their list.  (My vet doesn't give the CIV vaccine, and since I'm trying to limit the vaccines the puppy gets, he wouldn't have gotten it anyway.  Do you have any thoughts you'd like to share about this or any other vaccine, I'd be interested to hear).

Finding another day care has been trickier than I thought it would be because of his age.  However I knew before we got Todd that this might become an issue.  So with a little bit of convincing, the doctor I work for agreed to my bringing Todd to the office.  However there are a few rules, one being that he must be kept in his crate in the break-room, and cannot be taken out (except by me and only to be taken outside) and is not allowed in other parts of the office--Of course I agreed, and I will be the model employee during those times--Wish us luck at the dentist!

  2. How lucky are you...to be able to take Todd with you to work. I hope it works out well. Love the photo of the butterfly and cone flowers.

  3. Just wait until he (Todd, not the Dentist) starts arroooing in tune to the high speed!! (couldn't help but throw in a bit of dental/Scottie humor there) All joking aside, he'll do great and hopefully nap through most of your work day.

  4. First of all, two very nice photos. Todd seems to be always picture perfect. A great butterfly photo. How fortunate to be able to take your puppy dog to work. I know Todd will win everyone's heart. Good luck, hope it will all work out for all involved.

  5. Hi Kim! Something tells me you are a model employee to start out with - This is great! I imagine Todd will get a lot of attention there. Who can resist sneaking back to the break room to see that cute face!!
I hate getting vaccines for Gracie.. she seems to always have a reaction. The only thing I never noticed a reaction to was the bordetella. I don't get that for her unless I know she's going to be boarded though..
I hope Todd enjoys his new 'day care'.

  10. There are more and more offices in Canada that are allowing people to bring their dogs to work and I think it's lovely, a lot of them don't even make you crate the dog!

As for vaccines, I never finished vaccinating my cats because poor little Magique had a terrible reaction to her first shots. For dogs, I guess vaccines are more important since they spend more time outside, but as my cats are indoor cats, I gave up on the whole vaccine idea altogether. I wouldn't vaccinate my dogs for more than rabies if it was me though!

  12. wow..I need some pointers on how to convince your boss to let you bring your puppy in! I've been working on mine, but so far...no go. Ha... Sounds wonderful that this solution is available to you. As for vaccines...I'm getting everybody's (dogs and cats) puppy shots, and their first year booster. After that it will be just every three years and maybe less for the house cats. Haven't really decided yet.

  13. Everyone is going to fall in love with Todd, even the dentist. If the break room has a door, I have a feeling that the "stay in crate" rule might not stay in place too long.

  14. I'm sure Todd will behave himself and be as good as gold..I smile every time I see his picture and those ears! :0)

  16. Woof! Woof! Mom says I was not given CIV vaccine. Do you feel that Todd is not getting enough socialization with the Golden Pines Gang? (one reason you are taking him to doggy care). That's wonderful Todd get to go to work with you ... I hope he does not make lots of noises ... mom says her dentist office is so quiet. can't wait to hear Todd's day with you at work. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  17. wow, lucky Todd...I hope he's being paid well! If it doesn't work out - do you have dog walkers/housesitters around your way??? I think you have an understanding boss that's for sure...although I'm guessing he's seen Todds pictures and like us has fallen in love with the little tyke! x

  18. Ummm, I'm not for unnecessary vaccines...in fact, we didn't even get our son the Chickenpox vaccine. So he got chicken pox and that was okay by us...so much is put into our system AND our pets! So good for you!

  19. We've been fighting the vaccination battle for a while now. We are concerned about possibly exposing our older and sick dogs to kennel cough and so we do the bordatella when someone goes to a class or a show.

    It's a hard decision.

  20. Who can resist a puppy.....Todd will have them all won over shortly.

  21. I'm betting Todd will have the whole office won over in no time!

We had a dog who had progressively worse and worse reactions to vaccines (at first we weren't sure the vaccine caused it) until we got to the point where we and the vet agreed that he was exempt from vaccines. I looked at his vet records that came with him from the tracks and he was given a three year rabies vaccine every year for three years in a row. I've always wondered if this had something to do with his strange reaction to it later in life. His problems started at around six or seven years old. Anyway, knowing what I know now, I'm all for less vaccines most of the time.

  22. i came to hate the word vaccine. tho i know in some cases they're necessary. they nearly killed my little cocker with them. gave her too many at one time. she ran a high fever and was almost in a semi-coma. they apologized, but what if she had died? some vets think there's a tendancy toward "over vaccination." one of those subjects one could pro and con forever i guess. i think you made the RIGHT decision. (as always).
hugs to all your furries, and the baby too. (and the kitty!)

scotties are sociable puppies but can be slightly aloof adults ( our george is not aloof with us) but is typically wary of strangers...

I am warming to a white scottie...perhaps for my birthday?

  25. I'll bet things will be just fine at the office. Glad that will be an option. I would question whether the daycare really had some cases of canine influenza. I don't think it is very prevalent there, especially if your vet doesn't give it. It almost seems they don't really want young puppies if they insist ALL dogs have shots, some of which puppies shouldn't have. I know the CDC Website has a section on canine immunizations and that might be of help. www.cdc.gov/flu/canine

  30. Love that Todd gets to go to work with you! Maybe he can calm down upset patients? I see a therapy dog future!! Sweet!

Oh, the vaccine thing! Shame on these organizations for requiring vaccines and immunizations above and beyond what's healthy. I am not a fan and have really laid off of them, especially since immune issues run in Cooper's lines.

I'll try to dig up some information over the weekend that you can review at your leisure.

But i heard that it is hard to find a good day care for your kids and i can understand it can be just as hard to find a good day care for your sweetie!

  34. You are so right about the benefits of socialization for our dogs. We are so happy that we sent Sophie to day care when she was a pup. She learned so much.....from the other dogs! They really do 'work it out' amongst themselves.
Funny, we just got back from a visit to this day care....we were visiting my nieces dog who is there for two weeks. She really needed this interaction and it is working out very well!
Good luck in finding a good one.

  35. I think every place should implement a 'bring your pet to work' practice. Of course, with cute critters like Todd around, perhaps not enough work would get done... ;)

I am sure he will be a very good pup!

  37. I get the CIV vaccine because my the Mom is SO involved in rescue and I am so socialized. The canine flu is shed (contagious) before symptoms are presented, so the only way to truly curb it's spread is vaccination.

All that said, I totally understand a reluctance to be vaccinated for everything. And since you are a puppy, you must be careful to get off to a great start in life!

You are ADORABLE! And my the Mom would love to smooch your fuzzy ears and sweet face. Just saying.

    with love from the Bleu!

  38. Dear little Todd must be laughing up his sleeve - he gets to go to work with Mom, how cool is that?!

Here in the UK they aren't vaccine crazy (we don't have to give them rabies jabs, for example) but they do need their annual boosters. We have never had any problems. When we got out previous dog from the rescue centre she was already suffering with canine distemper and was in a terrible state - this then passed along to our other dog, even though we had deliberately made sure she was vaccinated to avoid her getting it.

Good luck with keeping Todd in the crate!

  40. Kim,

I just caught up on all the many happenings in your pack while I've been away. I have only a brief time on the internet but I wanted to say how HAPPY I am that the extraordinarily cute Todd has joined you. Also, I'm not at all surprised that Reggie is happy in your family! Finally, I've thought of Rudi all along, hoping that you were getting some quality time with her. I can see that you've been given that gift - and I'm so glad.

  41. It is great that you can take Todd to work with you.

Any vaccine can have side effects. You have to weight the good against the bad. I know a lot of people around here let their parvo vaccines slip and then we had an outbreak of parvo and there were a lot of sad dog owners.

As far as canine influenza, Thunder got kennel cough after a benched dog show (we had not vaccinated him for kennel cough before going). It got progressively worse and the vet was very worried it was canine influenza (had some symptoms, not others). She said that CI can be a fast killer. (This was before they had developed a vaccine.) She treated his kennel cough aggressively and luckily it wasn't CI. We still haven't vaccinated against CI but we do keep his bordetella up to date. We also don't tend to take him to as many places where dogs are all together anymore, so his chance of exposure is more limited.

Just curious, why doesn't your vet give the CIV?
