Everything went well for Lucas yesterday and I am contributing it to your good thoughts and prayers that you sent for him! The work began on the right side of his mouth. It was originally thought that all of his teeth would have to be removed. However with Lucas under anesthetic, the dentist was able to do a more thorough exam and it was decided that about 5 of his teeth on the right were salvageable; but in the end 15 (!!) were removed. He will have another surgery in about a month to do the left side to remove and save about the same number.
From the time Lucas came to us, he's not been able to eat a kibble based diet. Instead he eats a freeze-dried food mix (called Grandma Lucy's) that when warm water is added, becomes like a porridge with meat and vegetables. He likes it really well, and is eating with no problems. As you can see in the pictures, his mouth is swollen from the work and the sutures--However he's up and around this morning and is even doing a little bit of stalking of the cat. There are a few hurdles to get over as far as healing, but I think he's going to be okay!
Oh thank the good Lord, I was so anxious to hear some news and have been watching for an update and I am thrilled to hear this great news Kim! Bless his brave heart, what a wonderful dog he is! I will continue to send the very best love and good wishes for Lucas and the rest of the gang...love to you all this morning!

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that Lucas had a successful surgery. I can only imagine how much it hurts to have that many teeth removed... but he'll feel better in the long term. Did the board approve dental implants? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you found a food that he likes. It sounds a lot like what we make K at home, and she adores it.
That's great news Kim. Stalking the cat tells me he is back to normal - sounds like a fun game. I'll bet if interviewed, even the cat digs it!!
ReplyDeleteEaston sends a "way to go" Rooooooooooooo for Luc.

Great news.

ReplyDeleteI am so happy that Lucas was able to keep some of his teeth. I am also happy everything went well.
ReplyDeleteI guess he is not in to much pain when he is stalking the cat.

ReplyDeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteYou are able to catch the cutest pictures of your critters. I love the one of Lucas and the cat and I'd love to know what the cat is thinking!
Glad things went well for Lucas!
Oh that's good news, poor Lucas! I hope he gets used to it soon. Our little cubby lost all his teeth in his old age. He actually felt better when they were all gone!
ReplyDeleteGreat news for Lucas !
ReplyDeleteHe probably doesn't know there are any teeth missing, especially since he eats the soft food, and likes it.
You are such a dedicated friend and caretaker to your pets Kim.
~Jo
I'm so glad to hear the surgery went well. I like KB's question about dental implants for him.
ReplyDeleteCindy
Bless his Golden heart!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Lucas! Really happy to here he's doing well. Hang in there Kim.
ReplyDeleteLucas, be sure to tell them that with the sore mouth and lack of teeth, you will need lots and lots of cheese, peanut butter, hamburger, and other goodies. Cake, pie and ice cream are good for the mouth too. So hang in there Lucas, good things come to those who gum their food!
ReplyDeleteMogley G. Retriever
Oh were so happy that Lucas is doing sooo good! He will be feeling better soon- we just know it!
ReplyDeleteIts a good sign- when hes looking at the kitty CC.. At least he has his mind off the teeth missing.
We will keep sending healing thoughts to him.

I'm so happy for Lucas...poor guy..to have to go through that but I know he's going to feel much better.
ReplyDeleteThank YOU for being such a good caretaker of our sweet 4-legged children...bless you.
Joyce
Oh poor Lucas!!!
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I completely disassociated his need to have teeth removed with "oral surgery". Lucky for me because I am absolutely phobic about the dentist. Just looking at Lucas' poor swollen mouth and traumatized eyes (that is MY interpretation because MINE would be traumatized!) make me all squeemy. PLEASE don't tell us about when you're going to take him back for more....
(I think he's earned his very OWN kitty!)
;-)
We join in the hallelujah chorus that Lucas made it through this first surgery, got to keep some teeth, and is recovering well. Has he made any special friends among the dogs yet? All of the photos of him seem to be with the cat. We're also relieved to hear the black Lab was claimed and is, we hope, safely at home.
ReplyDeleteJed & Abby
Great news for Lucas - we're so happy to see him chasing the kitties. Hopefully his recovery will be an easy one and that the next surgery will be successful too.

ReplyDeleteHope you're not feeling "down in the mouth" for too long! Slurps, Tucker
ReplyDeleteWonderful news. I'm just so sorry that Lucas had to go through all of this. I'm still sending prayers his way to finally get through the end of this with the least amount of discomfort.
ReplyDeleteAw… hope he's feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everything went well for sweet Lucas! And I hope he continues to get better and better.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend Kim and furry friends!
xo Catherine
Sweet, Sweet Lucas...If this is anything like human dental extractions I am sure he is going to be feeling so much better in a short time. Keeping him in our prayers.
ReplyDeleteTodd, Todd,Todd, he just continues to make me SMILE.
