Murphy's Canine Law

Murphy's Canine Law dictates that the dog with the most sensitive digestion will also be the dog with the least discriminating palate. I am finding that Todd is a living example of this law.  He'll eat anything that is not dog food and I have learned to just expect to see an unpleasant revisit of it somewhere later at the worst possible time and place.

~The Lovely & Fair Annie~
Along with chasing the birds that fly overhead Todd's favorite hobby is wandering around the house or yard with his nose to the ground looking for something to eat.  Note that I didn't say he's looking for something 'edible.'  Many of the things that Todd eats are not things that should be eaten. Case in point is that lately Todd has gotten a bit of a toenail-chewing-eating-obsession and it's NOT with his toenails, but Annie's.

As you may or may not know, all of the dog's love Annie.  Lucas admires her from a safe distance because Sheba defends and protects her.  Sandy can't see her, but that doesn't matter, if she's nearby he knows it and will follow her anywhere.  Even Charlie seems happier when Annie is around.  I guess given all that attraction to Annie it may just make sense that Todd would find something else to 'admire' about her.
~The Blonde Sisterhood, Sheba (left) and Annie~
I've no idea what to do because I can't seem to stop Todd from chewing and eating them, and so I guess all I can do is be thankful that she only has 18.
Enjoy your Thursday!  Its another busy day for me and at at the end of it, if I can take the heat and the wait, I'll be hearing President Obama speak at an event in Leesburg.

  2. Um, that's kind of yucky, but at least you don't have to trim Annie's toe nails. :-)

Delilah has her nose to the ground ALWAYS and like Todd eats more than she should.

  4. Miggy was the same when outside and still is a bit, we call her bucket mouth always nose to the ground and scooping up what ever she can chew , both inside and out she has chew toys that she will chew on but she is almost 3 now and she is slowly stopping the habit ! It may pass for Todd as he gets older ! As for the toenails of Annie that is weird but our Cat Harley nibbles Miggys paws till Miggy tells her off . Good luck and have a good day !

  12. Monty has the same weird digestive habits, plus he is a voracious eater of his own nails... There has got to be a reason?

  14. I've seen dogs and cats lick each other for grooming/loving purposes but I've never seen a dog lick another dog's nails! Wow! I can just imagine how much this habit has confused and amused you!

  15. A dog with a foot fetish? lol! Can't believe Annie puts up with it.

  16. We had one dog, Pylon, that we called a 'plastic retriever' because she preferred eating plastic to anything else.

Tell us about hearing the Pres speak. I'm jealous.

  20. Lol, and I thought Sophie was a bad one! We spent the entire morning in the vet's office the other day because she ate termites hosed down with bug spray. It was an extra $60.00, by the way, just to talk to a vet at poison control!!!

  21. That Todd, always up to something. We saw him in the Stick Carrying event. What an athlete.

We didn't know Leesburg was such a political hotspot..as candidates showed up last election, too.

  24. I love reading about the dogs. :) I thoroughly enjoy their antics. I hear you on the food thing with Todd - my Oliver is "sensitive" to a whole lot but will try absolutely anything at least once if I don't stop him. :)

  25. What beautiful girl She is, no wonder all the others look up to her. There must be such a sense of peace at your place.

Tell Todd, Bert said to "NOT Eat the tennis ball"

  26. Ha! Well, dogs can eat horse hooves with no problem, so other dog toenails shouldn't be a problem! :P I just read a blog post tonight about a dog who ate $157 and they gave him peroxide and made him throw it up! Gah!

  27. Wow Kim,
Todd chewing someone else's nails? That's extraordinary! I'm sure behaviourists would enjoy analysing that one, lol! What a cutie Todd is, but Annie gives him a run for his money :). Like all terriers, I am sure that you feel exasperated sometimes.

  29. U mean Todd chews Annie's nails On her and not after they've been trimmed!?? I really can't send any advice on this one!
He looks just so cute in all the pictures with his ears standing upright. It's such an obvious deviation from all other ears around...tee hee:O)
Am sorry about Lucas and Annie's blood results. But am hoping for the best.
Lovely pictures of DC. especially like the Whitehouse skyline...
Hugs to all your babies. Have a great weekend

  30. Maybe Todd thinks that is helping Annie! This funny and odd at the same time.
Now, you are going to see and hear President Obama? What a privilege for you Kim! I would like to hear him live and I'm not even an American but one who so admires his message!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh. My. GOSH! Kim, you just gave me the best chuckle of the day! My doxie chews his OWN nails, but this is so funny! I like to think he is "helping" her out...my grand beagle always had impeccable nails (that she "trimmed" herself btw :) but as she got old, she was not able to keep it up. Maybe Todd is just being a perfect kindly gentleman and helping out a friend!
    Have a calm weekend..
    stay cool

  33. That Todd is the funniest little character! He is like a little cartoon doggy doing silly things.
Can't you just see a cartoon about featuring all of the funny things Todd does?
All the furies photos are so beautiful. We cannot get enough of looking at them. How lucky you are that you can see their sweet faces everyday.

  34. We're also unclear as to whether the nails are still on Annie or not when Todd chews them. If Annie gets annoyed about it, she or Sheba will teach Todd some puppy manners.

When Jed was young, he used to eat everything, too - rocks, sticks, leaves he'd jump 4 feet in the air to snag from trees, sewing pins he snagged from the sewing table. He's improved as he's aged, although occasionally he still slips us a nasty surprise. He and Abby have both developed a taste for stinkbugs. Doesn't seem to hurt them, so what the heck.

  35. I always love the posts about the intimate details relating to the dogs. This one was a doozy. Leave it to Annie to seduce the whole pack. Never a doubt.
