Letting Them Know

~CarrieAnne~
If you've stopped by to see what our snow looks like, you've wasted your energy--We have no snow. Yes, we are disappointed, but the dogs and I continue to do our best snow-dance, and wait and hope for our turn to have a snow-day!
~Sheba doing a snow-dance~
I am also disappointed in what's happened along the edge of our property--The electric company has put up the power line for the home that's being built in back of us. Because of where our power line is, we knew about where the new one would be. But I just had no idea that when it was decided, that it would mean that the 'natural fence' that consisted of trees, blackberry bushes, honeysuckle and everything else would be totally gone, as well as the boundary that the dogs knew not to cross.
The hedge is almost all on our property, and in the below picture, you can see how wide it was.  Now anyone using the new driveway has a full view of our yard and the dogs think they now have more room to explore.
From our house I could see that it was a mess, and I have to admit to being a little upset about it all.  I could see that the workers were getting ready to leave, and so I went over to talk to them about it before they left.  Even the trees had been left where they had fallen when they were cut.  I told a man named 'Evan,' who looked like he was the one in charge, that I understood about their doing their job, etc., and as disappointing as it is to lose the privacy and the hedge, I was really unhappy about the mess they were leaving.  I told him I was not going to be able to do the clean-up and stack the wood by myself and that I thought since there were more of them than me, that they should do it. With the workers already in their trucks to leave for the day, I really thought that they weren't going too.
~Josh, still with his frisbee~
After they'd gone, I walked back over with the dogs and found they had cleaned up and stacked the wood. I was very thankful and appreciative that they had done what I'd asked.
I guess it does pay to let someone know that you're not happy with what they're doing.
I think CC does a good job of letting Todd know when she is!
Enjoy your weekend!

  1. How about planting a hedge along your property line? It seems right that the city would do it since they rid you of yours without your permission.

I can see by the last picture Todd is more than just a little annoyed by it all.

  2. Such a pity to lose a lovely hedge, especially when it formed a boundary to keep the dogs back. Will another hedge (albeit smaller) be planted to replace the old? Who owns that piece of land I wonder, or will some other kind of fence be put there. I don't see quite why the old one had to be removed when the elec. wires seem to be overhead anyway.

Looks like CC has Todd sorted out though. lol.

  3. Sheesh! What a pain. That will take some getting used to by both you and your dogs. Still left your blog with a smile tho. Todd is a people pleaser.

  4. I know all too well about losing hedges and the precious privacy that comes along with it. Bummer about it being a fence line for the dogs as well. I suppose the good news is once the line goes in, you'll be free to plant whatever you want?

    Todd cracks me up.

    Best,

    C

  5. Well that blows. I love natural "fences". Do you think they will plant something to replace it. I hope so. If you are looking for you snow I think I have it. It started Friday and they say it will stop Sunday afternoon or so. Craziness. But MOM said she will still take me for a hike. Hope so.

  6. SO sorry, that isn't right. Can you plant in there or will you have to build a fence? I know that has to be irritating.

Yah, you have to speak up or they will walk all over you...

  7. I LOVE when you nicely ask someone to do something and they just DO it!! What a great start to your weekend!

  8. Good for you to speak up. I hope you can plant something there or maybe put up a fence. The donkey rescue place has still not been sold, so I wonder who will buy the house and the land and hope they will be good neighbors. We will not have any problems with utilities since it's all there, but we will share the public road.

  10. Oh dang, sorry about losing the hedge. I would start a new one this year and you will be surprised how quickly it grows. Oh Todd, you are such a little honey boy.

  11. Hey, Kim...just a thought...contact the power company and ask what "will replace your natural line with"...when we lived in VA our neighbor asked permission to feed off our line and the power co told us they would remove a few pines but we insisted they replace with shorter bushes....:)JP

  12. Kim, take a break from all that snow dancing.....That is really sad about the bushes, I would hate that......Thank goodness they cleaned up the wood at least, ......Love the picture of Todd getting what for.....Blessings Francine.

  13. That's too bad that they took down the hedge, but you're lucky they cleaned up all that wood. One time the hydro company came to trim back the large pine tree on my mother and I's front lawn before I moved out and they left all the trimmings in the ditch in the dead of winter and drove off. I was stuck raking up the whole lot in the spring!!!

  14. Is that public land or yours? Privacy and a hedge line that gives the dogs a boundary, all so important, and a new one, if that is possible, will take some time to grow. You need fast growing,INSTANT!!! trees/bushes, and maybe just a little snow.I am so glad you spoke, and that they did clean up some of the mess, Greetings from Jean.

  15. I feel your pain. I hate to see 'nature' destroyed in an instant and I detest change. I hope all goes well with your new neighbors and that you can figure out something to restore a bit of your privacy. I'm coming to terms with having (eventually) close neighbors again---I would just as soon not, but it seems like nothing stays the same and I'm trying to think positive. ha...

Glad too that Josh found his frisbee! Yay! It means so much to them. Sage, my big orange/white kitty has this nasty little teddy bear he carries around. I have to be vigilant and put it up at night out of the dogs way. I've had to patch and mend it several times after the dogs got it.... ;-)

Oh! I also wanted to tell you I am really enjoying reading the individual stories of your rescues on your other blog and how you got started.

  17. PLANT IT BACK< then thumb your nose at them for tearing up you property. When they do that here they are required to return the right of way like it was with new plants or bushes!

  19. We see planting projects in your future. At least they cleaned up even if you had to ask(?)

Does Todd pay attention to CC though..

  20. I'm sorry that happened. As others have said, they should return and replace the lost shrubs with lower growing plants that won't interfere with the lines.

  21. We sure don't need to do any snow dances around here. We have over a foot of it on the ground now. Millie is in heaven. That picture of Todd and the cat is too funny. The way his hair falls over his eye (so you can't see it) makes it look like he already lost an eye to the cat! LOL!

Sorry to hear about your hedge. I hope you can get it replaced.

  22. Your property is beautiful. I can see why you'd be upset.

I hope they turn out to be wonderful neighbors.

  23. That sucks! Do check out your legal rights about getting the utility company to restore your property. As the house in back is new, presumably there was no long-standing utility right of way along that drive. They don't have the right to destroy or impinge on your property because it is cheaper or more convenient for them. In fact, with VA's new state constitutional amendment protecting owner's against the taking of private property, which is what this was, you may have good recourse for substantial monetary compensation from the utility that would pay for the restoration. It was nice that they did what they should have done without asking and cleaned up a little, but that's not nearly enough to make you whole.

Mama has been super happy with the lack of snow this year, especially with Jed's perpetual leg wound that has to be kept dry when he goes outside. So we have to tell you mama is hoping that, if your snow dance works, it only works out where you live and not closer to D.C. :)

  24. That sucks they got rid of your hedge... :(

Maybe the dogs can help you plant a new know... That would involve digging, right? :P

  25. They probably wouldn't, but maybe you could complain to the electric company, (or City Hall?) and just maybe they might reimburse you the cost to replace some of it.

Not enough, I know, but the worst that could happen is they say no.

    *hugs*

I would have been really upset, too. And probably not as civil, so I learned a good lesson today. ♥

  26. Woof! Woof! So glad they listened to you KIM. Too bad what they did with the trees. I guess the Golden Pines Gang need to be extra careful especially Todd. Can't believe the SNOW missed you. I guess it is good in a way. Hope Carl is doing well. I got a new Frisbee too + my new posh bed. Have a good weekend. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  29. Why in heavens name would they grub out a whole hedge to instal a power line ? How frustrating .

  30. Proof I guess Kim that it sometimes is OK to let people know how one feels. You obviously had the right approach and said it in a manner that wasn't offensive. Good for you and good for them too!
Go CC go! Love the look on Todd's face!! lol
Good to see you this morning.

  31. You must be feeling really disappointed about the hedge. Yes, in this life one has to speak up. Gee, I'm sorry. Trees take so long to grow. Such a pity.

  32. Ugh...that is disappointing. It's so nice to have a lovely natural buffer around you. Love the photos!!

  33. Over the years we have experienced similar situations whether it be annoying neighbours or tree removal etc. You were within your rights to express your displeasure, maybe even an email to the company, the squeeky wheel...well you know. The other side of all of this is that maybe whatever grows there, will be just fine. Try to be positive!

  34. That is just so sad - however, a chance to plant something new and interesting, although it wont be the same. Guess it could have been even longer - only way to look at it. I hope the new neighbours appreciate what happened and help with restoration.

  35. I am jealous of your 'no' snow!! I wish mine would go away. That's too bad about your trees and hedges but yes, at least they cleaned up a bit. Take care!

  36. Todd is so darn cute! He looks like he's always looking for "trouble".

  37. It would seem to me you should be compensated in some way. Did they maintain an easement on your property? If so, there is probably language in the deed that would list their responsibilities.

But it was nice that they stacked that wood for you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why did it all have to go? I'm glad they stacked it for you.

  39. oh so sad. such a blight on the landscape. like a war zone and for what? one has to hope the reason is at least understandable. usually never in my book.
oh well. that's why you're calm always and my blood pressure is through the roof! LOL.

  40. Hello Todd and all you dogs and Mom,
I am so sorry for your loss and it is a big loss!!!! I would die if our boundaries were gone!!
One day soon I will catch you and we will talk but until then we have to settle for comments! LOL

  41. I'd be angry about the hedge too. Shouldn't they have talked to you ahead of time if it's on your property? I'm glad that they at least cleaned up for you... Now, perhaps they should pay for a fence...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Kim, I'm so sorry that you lost your privacy hedge-such beauty now gone. Maybe you can plant some new fast growing shrubs to block the view. Sorry you haven't gotten any snow-we are cold here and I'll be happy when spring rolls around but our Hunter does enjoy it.
    Hugs, Noreen

  43. I had some similar work done in our old back yard. I called an complained and the city came out and replanted shrubs and grass. I had to water the grass seed but was very pleased with the repair work that was done.
