Annie's Excellent Adventure

I am lucky in that I have a really nice Doctor to work for.  Along with being a pretty good dentist (I think) Doctor S. is really a kind man, who is also really supportive of my love for animals.  Some of you may recall how two years ago he allowed me to bring Todd to work with me until he was old enough to go to daycare.  And lets not forget this past May when he agreed to let me have 5 baby chicks in the office.  So when I read about "Take Your Dog to Work Week" about a month ago, I just had to ask him if I could bring one of my dogs to the office for the day.  It was no surprise that Doctor S. said it was okay.  However he clearly had his own ideas and opinions about where and how the dog I brought would spend the day in the office.
For several reasons I decided to bring Annie.  But one of the "rules" that Dr. S had about Annie being in the office for the day was that she should stay in the break-room away from the patients.
But since I was working at the front desk on the day she came, that's where Annie spent her day too.
Another thought that Doctor S. had was that Annie shouldn't have direct contact with the patients.  Almost every patient greeted Annie and visited with her.  A couple even played ball with her.
Dr. S was also pretty adamant that Annie not be allowed in the treatment areas of the office.
 "Well, okay, Dr. S."  ...
At the end of Annie's day in the office everyone felt that our being a part of "Take Your Dog to Work Week"  had been a success!  Annie enjoyed her day, and she was a great ambassador for the rescue. Dr. S agreed to let me bring Annie again next year.  Providing of course, that we (again) follow the rules.

  3. How adorable!! My dentist has three dogs that are in the office whenever she is. The small ones (Havanese) are offered to nervous patients who could use some soothing. There are dog gates sectioning off the waiting room from the office area, but they are usually open. Dog beds, dog toys, it's a great atmosphere for us dog folks ... I wonder how non-dog people feel about it?

Now that I think of it, my eye Dr. has dogs in his office, too. He and his wife (the office manager) foster dogs for Yorkie and Maltese rescue. There was one particularly adorable Maltese while I was there one day, who jumped into my lap and insisted that I play fetch with him and his spitty TelleTubby toy.

  6. Looks like Annie had a great time. Do you work at a vet clinic or a human clinic? Dogs are great for theropy and the patients helps humans recover or just feel better ! I am glad you both had a good day there together .Awesome photos . Thanks for sharing . Have a good weekend.

  8. Kim, What a wonderful boss you have! When I worked in banking, many of our customers would bring their well behaved dogs in to visit but then one couple who didn't like dogs complained so we had to stop allowing it.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  9. I would imagine that with so many people being fearful at the dentist, that having a soothing, calm dog there could be really helpful. Too bad Dr. S is such a stickler about the "rules!!" BOL!!

  10. How adorable is she? :) I thought this was a cute and funny post! I see that no one in the office (including Annie) disregarded the rules! I think it's wonderful when dogs are part of the work day and love it when I go to shops and a cat or dog greets me at the door! Daisy, my coon hound, is lucky to be able to come to work with me as an assistant dog walker and she agrees!

what a beautiful girl she is.
she could melt the hardest heart.
but it seems there were none to melt! even Dr. S is a softie.
I think dogs in dentists' offices should be an everyday thing! think how relaxed and happy each patient would be!

  14. So glad that Annie got to go to work. I think a dog should be a requirement in dental offices. It would make it more pleasant for me to pet a dog.

I loved that shot of her in the chair.Your boss must be a very nice man.

  22. This is so cool, and it was so great of Annie to obey all the rules. ;) I have a phobia of going to the dentist. Of course, i'm a big girl, so i do it, but if Annie was there when i went to my appointments, i would actually look forward to the pick! lol.

  33. Hi Y'all!

Dr. S is being really short sighted. What a wonderful thing to have a pawed one to help a nervous child through a scary dental exam! I think she should be an everyday helper!

    Y'all come back now,

  34. I loved this post. The doctor was probably just worried about germs, but I bet you he found his patients much more relaxed as he treated them after the interacted with Annie. I loved that picture of her in the chair with that purple bib on. Sweet Annie had a day to remember.

  35. Ok, no offense, but every dentist office could use a sweet pet every day of the week to greet and calm the nervous patients. Love the pic of her in the chair.
Sophie and I visit several nursing homes because I still have friends in nursing, and everyone is always asking if she is the "therapy" dog. I personally think every medical facility of every kind could use a loving pet.

  36. How sweet of your boss to agree for you to take your pet to work. Especially with it being a doctors office. I think it is a great idea to allow animals in places, after all they are alot more obedient than kids.

  42. I remember how Todd followed the rules when he went to the office too. :-) I thought it was because he was an independent little Scottie, perhaps he had learned from someone else? ;-)

  43. Well Kim, in my opinion you are in every way indispensible to Dr. S.! And may be he too is partly an animal crazy person,..tee hee heee!

What a great day Annie had!

  44. Good job of following every rule :)

It looked as if Annie actually lightened up the patients a lot! I'd love it if my dentist's dog came to work all the time... (she actually did on one occasion when he did an emergency procedure on me on a Sunday!
