A Sunday Visit

~Annie~
We've had sunshine all weekend, but there’s been a definite crispness to the air this weekend here in northern Virginia. We’ve had frost a couple of mornings and each evening has required turning up the heat to take the chill off.  If we still lived in a subdivision, we would have leaf raking galore to do.  But here in the country, no one rakes and so we just let the leaves blow away.

I was looking forward to another quiet weekend, where I didn't have to go anywhere beyond our property lines, but of course that didn't happen.  I was on the road early Saturday morning to take Cissy to the vet to have the drain in her ear removed.  We'll be scheduling surgery for her very soon, and she was also given an antibiotic for a skin infection.  She was exhausted when we got home and was sound asleep after her dinner.
Today I got a call from Shadow's first family, asking if they could see him this afternoon.  It goes without saying that I feel like he belongs to and with us.
But there are those first 12 years of Shadow's life that will always connect them to one another, and I know they still care about what happens to him. We had a really pleasant visit, and I could tell Shadow was happy to see them again.  As I drove home afterwards I realized that Shadow is lucky; he has always had a home and a family that cares about him--Every dog should have that.
And maybe the chance to roll in the leaves too.

  2. Several of our dogs have been rehomed, and a couple of times their previous caregivers wanted to spend some time with them. I have never said no, but I admit I don't like it. In one case when they had the dog he wasn't being taken care of properly, so it was gut wrenching to say the least. I know how you feel.

  3. You are such a great person to let Shadow's old owners visit. I'm glad the visit left a good feeling in your heart. Shadow is very lucky.

I hope that things get easier for Cissy soon.

  6. I have to wonder why someone would give up their dog after 12 years. There must have been extenuating circumstances and that was very kind of you to let them visit her.

  12. Do you think it's confusing for Shadow to see them and then have to leave again? I'm just curious, since we don't really know what they think.

    Hope Cissy feels better soon!

  19. Hi Kim, I was thinking about you today-as I looked at Doggy Christmas Cards online, trying to figure out what to do with Hunter this year for the card exchange. Any ideas what you will do with your pack? I also couldn't believe the cost of the cards, so very pricey.
Love seeing Autumn in your yard!
    Hugs, Noreen

  26. Prayers being said for Cissy...sure hope that she is coming along ok. That really is nice of you to let the family come and visit...I'm not sure what the back story is...and why he isn't with them, but I guess it is good for everybody all around if visitation is included! xo Jeanne, Chloe and LadyBug

  29. Hugs to Cissy, I hate these long drawn out medical problems.
As for Shadow, I can see where the visits could have been awkward...so glad it went well for all of you.
We just got 6 inches of snow and the weather has turned cold. Guess it's wintertime now.

  32. Love that old Cissy. I sure hope her surgery goes well and she is feeling better soon.

It would be very tough to let Shadow's former people have visiting rights, but also very kind. Not sure how I would handle that.

    Take care,
    Tammy

  33. Was it hard on Shadow to see his family? I'm glad they still care - I always wonder about the ones that don't care.
