The Best Part

~Our driveway today~
I'm home today enjoying my first of two Thursday's off a month and it's cold and rainy outside.  After catching up on a few things, I had an early lunch which was the last of a vegetable soup that I made at the start of the week. As a kid growing up and even now, homemade soup on days like this is a perfect comfort food.  My Mom had no recipe when she made vegetable soup. That was because it depended on what was leftover in the refrigerator--Green beans or corn and just about everything else from a previous nights dinner, would all be added and served in white porcelain bowls with wide rims along with cornbread on the side. As we were enjoying a bowl of soup on the first night, I had that overwhelming desire for cornbread. It was so powerful in fact, that I made a pan just so I could eat a huge wedge warm from the oven at ten o'clock that night.  Talk about a memory in a bowl of soup--but those memories are among the best part of my life.
I hope you're enjoying your Thursday!

  2. We, just this minute, ate a bowl of homemade vegetable soup! I made a pot a couple of days ago, to take to my daughter , who now lives an hour away. I . like you and your mother make it with whatever vegetables are on hand, but always lots of carrots, green beans, and corn. This was always one of my daughter's favorite comfort foods, so of course, as our days are getting cooler, it was time to make it for her.
You, are so right, something so simple brings good memories. I live in north texas, so I am envious of your fall foilage. Fall as always been my favorite time of the year. I love the beautiful warm colors. I have enjoyed reading your posts, this week. I hope that means that things are settling down for you a little.

  3. Two of our daughters have asked for my vegetable soup recipe. It's hard to tell someone who is just starting their household that there's not a recipe ... just a general idea of how to do it. Canned tomatoes, or not. Beef, or chicken ... whatever is on hand. Veggies, potatoes, beans, of course. Always better the day after.

  13. Despite the rain, it looks gorgeous there, with some colorful leaves still on the trees.

Soup sounds perfect, and maybe a crackling fire too. We are in full winter mode here, with fires every day to help heat the house.

  22. Kim,
Don't tease me with that great looking bowl of soup. I would like some now. Wish you had a recipe to share.
It must be nice for you to be back to the four days a week. That extra day helps to re-charge your batteries and enjoy time with the crew and nature around you.
Not only that you can catch up on all the other stuff that needs to be done and still feel like you have a full weekend to look forward to.
Have a great weekend Kim, it's a long weekend for us being Remembrance Day on Monday.

  23. Oh yes, my Grandmother served me soup almost every day when I came home from school for lunch. She and I would eat in front of the TV as she watched her 'stories'. Now I still love soup and I'm hooked on a soap opera. Ow well, there are worse things.
