We said farewell to 2013 this week and like any year, there were ups and downs for all of us. I hope I'm ready for the challenges that this year will bring. But ready or not, 2014 is here.

~Todd on New Year's Day~ |
Our year is beginning with record breaking cold, bringing with it snow that started falling just as I was leaving work on Thursday. My one hour commute turned into nearly 3 hours where at one stretch along the highway I counted 9 cars that had slid off the road. Exhausted, I went to bed early only to be jolted awake about 3 o'clock in the morning by what could only have been the sudden silence. The high winds that had been blowing all night had knocked our power out. Navigating around the dogs in total darkness I found my phone to report the outage to the utility company. The dogs were of course now totally awake, and wanted to go outside to bark at the wind and maybe have a treat or two. After everyone was back inside, all we could do put another
dog *blanket* on the bed to stay warm and hope the power would come back on soon--And yes, mentally go through that list of things that we DON'T have for a power outage, and wonder why I hadn't made sure we had those extra batteries?
Thankfully we didn't have to wait too long for the power to be restored. Despite the still dicey roads and blowing snow, I did make it to work by 10:30. Now we're waiting for it to warm up.

~Cissy on the 'forbidden chair' keeping warm~ |
According to the weather forecasts, we may be waiting a couple of days for that.

~Shadow, who always finds a way to get his nose dirty ~ |
The dogs are the only ones who seem to be okay with that.
Enjoy your Saturday!
glad you were safe on the treacherous roads and power was restored, too. so many folks impacted by this front.
ReplyDeleteOh my. A power outage during a freezing storm is no fun. Glad you were able to stay safe and sound. Keep warm!
ReplyDeleteOz
Kim, so glad you arrived safely at home and your electric came back on. I had the same ordeal Thursday going home from work. The dogs really do not seem to mind the snow and cold.. Your Todd is adorable in his winter coat and who is one the last shot, another cutie! I just love all your dogs. Stay warm and happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat is good your power was restored quickly, and that your dogs keep you warm when they are not outside running about. Todd is a handsome guy in his outfit.
ReplyDeleteStay safe and warm, I have a friend who was away camping, but sleeping in the car, There were 2 of them, and 3 dogs, it was COLD, so one dog on the outside of each man, and one in the middle, He called it a " 3 dog night", so no wonder all of yours are so happy to be inside, on the bed or chair, all cosy and warm.I see on Google it will be a record cold snap. Greetings to all, Jean
ReplyDeleteNo power in this cold is not fun. Glad it came back in such a short time, but it sure is nice to have lots of canine heaters to add to the bed.
ReplyDeleteCindy
Happy new year to you Kim and all the 'gang'!Just LOVED seeing all those pictures of them in their festive coats and hats!
ReplyDeleteHope 2014 brings you much happiness.
Bellaboo X
Happy New Year Kim...that does sound a dicey journey home from work, at least you stayed on the road! Try to keep warm and hope the weather improves for you. (not sure if you got my email, but it was just to say there is post on it's way to you :-) )
ReplyDeleteMy dogs and I all hope you and your lot have a wonderful 2014!
ReplyDeleteSo pleased to hear that you remained safe while on the roads!
Wonderful read&lovely photos as always!
Best Wishes,

Whew, our cold is comming, but we won't have the snow, or real high winds. Stay Warm and out of the ditch!
ReplyDeleteThe Mad Scots
Pees; That Todd, hes a fashion pup!
Rug up. We're so happy you have enough dogs to keep you warm. Love Todd in that tartan scarf....so handsome.
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Hrrr...! Even though you don't like the cold it seems that your dogs are okay with it. Todd knows what's happening in the fashion world and he's looking so cute with his red and blue scarves in he photos you have put to your blog, Todd looks great!♥
ReplyDeleteHowdy Mates, Happy New Year to you all. Blimey it sounds cold over your way. Mum always feels sorry for the fella that has to fix the electrical problem especially if they're out in the cold doing it! Keep on snuggling and try to stay warm, and especially to your mum, stay safe while going to work.
ReplyDeleteNo worries, and love, Stella and Rory
Kim,
ReplyDeleteI hear you about the cold. I think it's the worst we have been through here and every time the power goes out I just cringe.
Your crew looks warm and Todd just wants to have fun. I think He is wondering when someone will come outside and toss his ball.
So Cute. All the best my friend to you and Carl in 2014.
We have been having the same crazy weather, although today it hit 35 and the sun was out. I did not leave the property for a couple of days and we had to do an incredible amount of shoveling. More severe cold is on the way. The photos are great. How many dogs do you have now? I have lost count.
ReplyDeleteYour dogs look very happy! And, I was just thinking - didn't you live in Alaska for a while? This weather must be easy compared to what you had up there :)
ReplyDeleteHang in there, it will get warmer.
Hi Kim, so happy to hear your all ok and the power is back on.....nasty cold weather all over it seems, so cold here.......Love the pictures of all the fur babies, such sweeties.....Keep Warm, Hugs Francine.
ReplyDeleteYou are having horrible weather back East, I hear on TV. Please stay safe and stay off those roads. And if the power goes out for a long time, you could always pile all the dogs on your bed. What a nice picture that painted in my mind. Happy New Year to you, Carl, kitty and the dogs.
ReplyDeleteI hate power outages...I am definitely not prepared for the apocalypse!
ReplyDeleteI worry about the fish tanks, the freezer full of food, etc.
Glad you got your power back on in a timely manner, esp. with your weather and the bone chilling cold! Stay warm and Happy New Year to all of you!
the weather is just plain awful. When our power goes out we have no water, as we are on a well.
ReplyDeleteRoll on Spring!!!
Stay warm - and Happy New Year!!
ReplyDeleteDespite what the dogs think, I am NOT okay with the cold and wind and snow and ice. Sections of our driveway look like an ice rink, and our front steps are a death trap. Our Ruby is okay with it, too, playing outside in the snow with her frisbee and having a great time ... Not me, as I freeze while out with her. Is it spring yet?
ReplyDeleteGlad you are safe and the power came back soon. We lost power December 2012 for 72 hours and after that learned the importance of having an emergency kit. After a second big outage in July (95 hours), we got a generator. Stay safe! Lee and Phod
ReplyDeleteSmartest move we made when we built our house was to have a large generator installed which will run the house for a week...longer if we really conserve. We're expecting single digits for the next few days. Very rare around here.
ReplyDeleteBe careful and stay warm, Kim. Looks like this next week could e cold for all of us!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! Stay warm :-). Happy New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have been watching the cold as it made its way towards you and worried for all of our friends in the east and Northeast. So glad your power came back on and that you are all safe.
ReplyDeleteSending you warm thoughts
Bert and My Vickie
All the kids look pretty cozy and warm. We are expecting a lot of snow and below zero temps in the next few days so my Molly won't want to go outside. Stay warm and keep the kid warm too.
ReplyDeleteGosh Kim
ReplyDeleteCold weather this time of year is soo scary- so many things that can happen out of your control! And no one wants to hear that silence when the power goes out! More scariness!
The dogs do happy about all of Mother Earths show! To them not a care in the world- as long as you are there with them.
We wish good things for all of you in 2014--!
love
tweedles and moms
Todd is looking mighty dapper in that jacket!

ReplyDeleteMonty and Harlow
So glad you returned home safely...The pups look comfy and warm, even with the power off. Rough winter so far and we have several months to go!
ReplyDeleteoh dear heart.
ReplyDeletefirst that you have such a long commute. good grief charlie brown.

all love. simply love.

Happy New Year - keep warm, love to the ones with fur coats (lucky dogs).
ReplyDeleteEaston sends Rooooooooooos of love to Miss Annie.
Happy New Year! We're sending more snow and cold your way. It's a blizzard here and the frigid temps are to follow soon. Good thing is we'll back in the 40s by mid week.
ReplyDeleteKeep warm pups!
ReplyDeleteHugs n kisses!
xo Catherine
I must admit watching on tv the weather in your area certainly looked extremely dangerous to be outdoors and the chill factor too.
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased your utility company responded quickly to your power and for all the dogs to stay safe and warm too.
Happy 2014 to you all.
The last photo tells you why long coated dogs love winter .
ReplyDeleteStay warm and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
It warmed up a bit here so that we could get dumped on with snow. Not we are headed back to the deep freeze. Joy. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you weren't without power for too long, I know how cold it can get after a while.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Kim.
You poor things - I've avoided a power cut but I know lots of Cornwall hasn't, Take care x
ReplyDeleteOh goodness! I only have 2 dogs and it's a pain when they end up awake in the middle of the night. I can't imagine with your group. The weather is something else this year!! :)
ReplyDeleteI worry about the power going out, myself. I'm glad to hear you weren't without for long. Todd looks so cute in that scarf. Love the sleeping kids too! The warm up will be here soon, it should be above freezing here tomorrow. Hang in there!
ReplyDeletestay warm
