The Commute

~On my way to work this morning~
Some of you know that I commute to work about an hour each way. I really do like my job.  But I have to admit that there are some days that I question myself about driving so far to get to work.  This is because a lot of my drive is stop and go traffic which can be exhausting.  Sometimes by the time I get home in the evening (6:30-ish), I am totally worn out from the commute.
~Josh~
But at the end of the day, there is nothing like the feeling when I finally approach the driveway.  Usually Todd and some of the other dogs are outside, and as soon as they see my van, they start barking.
I never get tired of that instant when they know I’m home.
~The gang at the fence~
The dogs are always excited to see me. If I’m having a good day, the dogs are just the icing on the cake. If I’m having a bad day, it’s impossible to stay down when they’re so happy. Their happiness is genuine and pure which is what makes it so special.
~Cissy~
Each day they remind me about unconditional love. It’s in every lick, jump, bark and tail wag. They appreciate the small and simple moments in life, as we all should.
~Sunny at the gate~
Today was a long and stressful day, and the drive home didn't help that.  But when I finally got home, I was reminded that being home and with the dogs is my favorite place to be and that the long drive is worth it. I'm ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

  2. The drive there and home again, a long trek, but the canine family welcome must be so heart-warming, it is many years since I drove in traffic anything like that.Sunny has a special welcome in those eyes. Cheers, Jean.

  3. I used to commute one hour each way (until December) so I know how it is. I developed health problems because of it as well as the stress, waste of time and environmental damage. But the dog welcome at the gate was always worth it!!! (Now I commute 20 minutes- much nicer!)

  5. What a wonderful post. I feel refreshed just reading it. Their sweet, unconditional love is just wonderful, isn't it ? Amazing, how they are never embarrassed to show their unabashed love and devotion to and for you.
Seeing that lovely picture of Sunny again reconfirms that he is so worth everything you have done for him. And, Cissy, what can we say about her compared to the miserable condition when she came to you. She radiates happiness.Great post.

  8. That northern VA traffic...yuck. Think of all those drivers who don't have a welcoming committee like you, poor buggers.

  10. I'm outside of Charlotte and it seems like it gets worse every year. I'm up to an hour each way too and my 3 pups really pull on my heartstrings making me want to stay home with them. They're usually all tucked in sleeping when I leave and bouncing at the door when I come home.

  11. Such a nice feeling to get home after a stressful day at the office and then a stressful drive and know that you are so welcomed by your furry friends.
I am normally home with Roscoe, but when I go out to either run an errand or just hang out with a friend I know that coming home will be the best time of my day out. He welcomes me home with so much excitement.
Have a great hump day. Ana

  12. Oh my goodness, to see them all at the fence like that put a smile on my face so I can imagine how happy it makes you. So sweet. Commutes stink - I've had my fair share of them but at least you have a group like that welcoming you home. :-)

  13. One of my reasons for retiring was that my commute to and from work was getting longer and longer. Perhaps, all I needed was a wagging, happy dog to relieve my stress at the end of my day.

  14. Gosh, Kim, I know and love that feeling even now that I'm retired! I'll get a big speech from both of mine when we get home from vaca!!!...:)JP

  15. It's good you have such a great welcome after such a long drive home. I'm curious as to how long the drive is with no traffic.

  17. Love this post--I think it can sum it up for allot of us. The frustrations of the working world vs. our furry family that loves us unconditionally. I commute about 35 minutes each way but it's mostly back roads. I think I really have it rough when tourist season hits and I have to follow the slow pokes, but looking at your pictures make me realize how easy I have it as far as traffic. I love that moment too when I pull up at the gate down at the road and get out to unlock it. The dogs are either barking wildly or running about chasing each other. Usually there are a couple of cats that are out in the catio and they start meowing at the top of their lungs too. It is all quite chaotic and I love it.

  18. Morning Kim, I always find it hard to get out the door to work, but that welcome when I get back home is like no other. Angel is so happy to see me, nothing like the love of a dog,God's gift. Love to see the gang welcome you home, sweet, Blessings Francine.

  19. Gosh, an hour each way Kim...what a killer. I'm lucky I only have a 15 minute journey each way to my work place. X x

  21. I don't envy you that commute. I used to do it day after day until we moved here. Now, if I were to drive to London it would take 6-8 hours. Hmmmmm.

  23. Commuting has to take a toll on you! I bet your pack can hear you miles away. Imagine all the jummping and yips as you get closer and closer until they see your van! What a welcome site when you get home!!!

  24. Now THAT is commuter traffic!
Kim, to see and hear the dogs there all waiting for you must take off that edge from a long day at work.
    How nice!

  25. Love your puppy dogs! You have me beat by 20 minutes.. The commute is bad by always nice to be greeted at home by your doggies. My Goldie Girl, gives me one of her happy growls and a hug..

  27. Such true words. I feel the same way when I am greeted by the pups!

I recognize the signs and destinations - because that was the area that K was from! I flew out and picked her up... a wonderful memory, even if your photo was meant to show how lousy the traffic was...

  28. It is really rough up here in NOVA for sure. We're so thankful you travel to see us too. That may be my favorite picture of Cissy!

  31. For many years I traveled three freeways to get to work and then often traveled between five offices. I know the feeling of getting home after traffic jams.

My last five years of work involved a short drive of six miles. What a great benefit. I could even drop by home for lunch and a quick romp with the dogs.

  32. I'm catching up a bit so, I'm commenting on a few posts. :-)

So exciting that you will be fostering labs. Have you ever had labs before? If not I'll be interested to see what your take on them is in comparison to the Goldens. Also, since I plan at some time in the future to do the same thing, I'll be interested to see how this works out.

Congrats on the milestones you have achieved with Cissy and Shadow, you are so amazing and make such a difference for these guys!

That must have been some whopper of a fight for the guy to pay $100 for two pies, and his wife must really LOVE those pies. :-) But it was nice for your friend to pay for dinner.

As for that commute? I don't think love or money could get me to sit in that kind of traffic. I get very claustrophobic. :-(

  33. I would absolutely hate that commute...5 minutes to my job and I couldn't be happier with that!
I too love my greeting when I arrive home. We keep a frisbee in the garage so I don't even make it inside before we hit the road for a walk and a toss. Ryker starts howling when the garage door comes up and hubby lets him out to greet me...game on!

  34. When I first started work at UCLA, it took me 17 minutes to drive through Beverly Hills to work. When I left some 30 years later, it too 45 - 50 minutes. It is insane. But what a greeting committee you have there. I know that must make you so happy.

  35. oh my god.
i think i'd clean houses before i could bring myself to commute like that every day.

  37. I have the same thing, but bit different.. I go to school by bus and the bus is F U L L... It really is full, all the seats are taken, people stand from the back of the bus side by side until the front door next to the bus driver... The hardest thing is the get out of the bus... But after school I go back to home and then the bus isn't that full. When I'm home again I'm happy when I see Mickey after the school day! :)

  39. Boy O Boy, my the Mom relates! Whee live just 9 miles from the Facktory, 20 minutes on a Sunday morning, but on a weekday... it can be an hour, hour and a half.

The Mom sends here sympathies and completely relates... the tension melts when she sees the fabulous ME!
