Watch Out for the Quiet Ones!

Georgie fooled me.  He fooled all of us.  Underneath his quiet, relaxed, unruffled exterior lies the heart of a renegade.  On our morning walk, I accidentally dropped his leash.  Georgie immediately saw his opportunity to make a getaway, and he took it.  Off he went, just like an escapee, straight into the woods, leash skipping along behind him. I don't think I've ever seen him move that fast.  Okay, Georgie's not that fast, but given that I had Charlie and Sunny on leashes, and three others off lead, it sure seemed like he was -- Because those few moments that I needed to get everyone together were all Georgie needed to bolt to freedom and disappear.

I put Charlie and Sunny inside and headed into the woods, through thorns and thick brush to find him.  I eventually found Georgie, casually sniffing a tree.  He was, of course, totally ignoring me, and before I could grab him, he started off again. No doubt about it, Georgie was in the zone. But he made a rookie mistake and zigged when he should have zagged, and I stepped on his leash--He was caught!  I slowly walked the delinquent back home.

Thirty minutes later, after a little water, just like Todd was after his encounter with the toad, Georgie had moved past the whole experience.  And just like Todd and as he is every morning, Georgie was anxious and ready for breakfast.  The moral of the story is, watch out for the quiet ones. I think I'm going back to bed.

  2. Well, now we know - never mind the "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" look, in the photo, Georgie is really an independent boy, alert to every chance to escape ! Never fear, Kim, he'd have been home in time for his next meal - no Lab would ever miss that !

  3. Sneaky isn't he! You never knew the old guy had it in him. He worked up an appetite after his romp through the woods. Georgie will have wonderful dreams after chow time.

  9. I wonder what went through his mind as he ran off in total freedom. Maybe not so old in heart at all. And I'm sure he would be back for his next meal, and a warm bed again.

  10. Why is it our dogs can't hear us when we're shouting for them to come back at the top of our lungs but they can hear a cheese wrapper from half a mile away. Gad you got everyone rounded up

  13. Oh yes those quiet ones. I think they go deaf when they run. I know that Goose when he was a running fool through the woods and I wanted him to come back would not hear a word. But lucky for me with Goose he always every few minutes would turn and look back to see where I was and would run up to me as if to say "OK good your still behind me." And off he would go again only to return a few moments later to check on me.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  14. Hi Kim, He does indeed sound so sweet, being quiet and all, that it would be easy to forget he might jaunt off. Glad you caught him and he was o.k. Sending you hugs from the Emerald Isle.

  15. OMG, that Georgie. Definitely watch out for the quiet ones. My mother always used to say that. My middle sister was and still is the quiet one, but she is good. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend.

  17. What a character. We would have run off, too. We have those retractable leads and they make so much noise...scaring us, that we finally stop and stand still.

SHE says good foot work getting that leash!

  22. LOL!
We had a similar thing happen at the kennel a couple of years ago.
A worker had put an old German Shorthair out in the big grassy area to mosey around and BAM! over the fence he went.
He had us and strangers alike, running after him! Finally my niece caught him by diving across a ditch as he was able to clear it.
Yep, watch those old and quiet ones!

  23. Thanks for stopping by. I know things have been difficult for you too. I knew about your brother and I am so sorry. I had a very difficult year, but I feel as though things are beginning to turn around a little. Sad moments and moments of joy mixed together. Life, I guess.

  25. How priceless! It reminds me of a quiet dignified yellow lab at the local shelter once. I opened the door to his kennel and he zipped out and gave us a merry chase. I'm glad you caught Georgie. :)

  34. You're right about the quiet ones. Tsar would take off if he got the opportunity and So will Sebastian. The noisy Porties won't leave my side.

  35. the happy wanderer, emphasis on HAPPY - Lady was my only Golden that would wander - I always figured it was because she always had an agenda (but neglected to tell me about it)

  37. Dear Georgie, the old scoundrel. He's a perfect match for my Wanderer, Harley. You cannot take your eyes off of him for one moment - he will shuffle off and completely disappear.

  38. I am sure with animals, as with humans, it surely is the quiet ones one has to watch.
Happily you retrieved George without mishap and I think you deserved a good rest.
Amazing how they forget what has happened and just get on with their lives.
