Minus Two & Plus One -- Welcome Dusty!

This morning my day off started with taking the five kittens to the vet for exams and vaccines.  I also said good-bye to two of them that will be going to a new foster home.  It's time.  They are now about 4 months old, weighing around 4 pounds each, and are active and mischievous as all kittens are.
While the kittens leaving has been planned for a couple of weeks, a new arrival wasn't.  With Carl out of town, I have welcomed to Golden Pines, a new 12 year old boy named Dusty.
He comes to us from someone who adopted him from a shelter this past March.  Dusty was originally given up in February by a elderly couple who were no longer able to care for him after a car accident. *She* was dealing with family losses, and saw Dusty at the shelter and adopted him. When I met her *She* told me that Dusty helped her through those losses, but now *She* was no longer able to care for him, and *She* felt that *She* needed to focus on herself now, saying to me in an e-mail today, "I know I made the right decision for both of us as yesterday I felt a bit lighter in spirit and was able to get a good workout at the gym. Not worrying about Dusty is such a blessing."  This is the part where I don't openly pass judgment on someone....
Dusty is what's important, and I think that by nature he is a nervous dog.  With all the changes he's had in the past several months, it hasn't helped for him to be that way, and it's totally understandable.  I asked our dog walker to come over to help me with the intros to our gang, that didn't go so well.  Dusty was really feeling the stress of the day, and so I decided to forgo the meetings which included Todd. Until then, he's got his own space in the house where he can relax and get used to his new life.
I'll do the rest of the one-on-one meetings in a day or so when Carl returns.  I've not told him about Dusty and until then I'll be practicing the look in the photo below for when Carl sees him.

I hope your week is off to a good start!

  2. Kim, You again remind me of just what a big heart you have. I am hopeful that Dusty will calm down quickly and be able to be introduced to the rest of the pack. Hope you time as being the sole provider for the pack and that Carl returns home quickly.
    Hugs, Noreen

  3. Well, it IS two down. I hope their new home/s love them forever. The case of Dusty, I feel badly about that, he must feel "shuffled."
I don't think Carl will get upset, after all the dogs that have come through ...

  5. Dusty is in the right place at Golden Pines, I hope the meetings and intros go well...it must be so strange for him being moved around.

Some years ago -- more than I wish to count ;) -- I came across a lady who had several yorkshire terriers, okay they are small, but this lady rescued two more to add to the household!! When I asked what her husband would say, her response was "well, they all look the same and he looses count"! lol. ;)

  7. Todd should take Dusty under his wing (like I do) and show him the ropes there.

  8. Dusty is beautiful. I am working on not passing judgment on others and will not. My grandmother is 93. She and my grandfather always had dogs and got the last dog in their late 70s or early 80s. She was a rescue. When they could no longer live in their home (because my grandfather became ill, he died almost 5 years ago), my aunt and uncle (who live on a farm) took her. It had always been the plan. My grandparents knew they may need someone to care for their dog and made arrangements. Brooke the dog had a wonderful last few years there, visiting my grandmother etc. Brooke died this week at age 15.

  13. I love Dusty - he looks like a gentle soul. I'm sure he'll relax soon. Ruby was really nervous when she first came to casa de rottrover - she is now queen. Sending Dusty deep breaths, and calm energy. People.

  16. What a shame poor Dusty had to go through that. I'm glad he's with you and I'm sure you and the gang will work your charm on him.

  17. Dusty is a good looking lad. Tell Todd to go easy on him when they meet. I think Carl has come to accept the unexpected surprises that he comes home to....he's a good man.

    Aroo to you,

  19. Dusty will know he's loved and secure soon, bless you! As for Carl, what's his favourite meal/cake/treat? If he's anything like the men in my life, food works a treat (rather like Goldies really, isn't it!!)

  20. Is there any doubt that Dusty has finally fallen on his feet? So glad he's with you and the others now, Kim. Hope he'll soon settle down and enjoy life.
It's always a worry what will happen to beloved family pets, if you are no longer able to care for them, and there is no immediate family to step in. Thank goodness there are big-hearted people like you around.

  21. I am confident that Dusty will settle in and enjoy himself with your pack. You truly are an angel, Kim. I am so sorry for all of the changes Dusty has had to endure. It must be so confusing for him. Tell Carl that you got Dusty for him for National Dog Day!

  25. Carl will be fine, I am sure . .
Dusty is in the best place ever, with you!
I must say, the importance of having a workout over the importance of a loved ones, (Dusty) well being blows my mind.
    No doubt about it . . .
Dusty needs to spend time with YOU!

  26. Why pay for expensive gym memberships when *she* had the best
    companion to exercise with.

  32. ohmygosh.
poor dusty had no idea that he was simply a toy that SHE tired of after awhile... when SHE realized he might actually need care and time that she didn't spend TOTALLY on herself. i'm sure he got in the way of her SELFIES.
i'm so sorry. this is apparently the part where i DO pass judgement! LOL.

so many changes in his life. now. maybe he can relax and feel at home.
and when he feels that way... he will calm down.
as always kim... bless you darling bean! XOXO♥
