How Fast Things Change

For the most part, things have been going pretty well at our house. Despite a few things, the dogs have all been in a pretty good place. But we all know that things can and do sometimes change quickly.

With that I'll start by saying that we've not had any real issues that felt like I was totally being knocked off my feet. That is not until this past Tuesday.

When I arrived home on Tuesday evening from work Iva was outside barking, and inside it was chaos because Carl was trying to get Todd back into his crate -- The rest of the dogs were equally upset barking and running between me and Carl. A few minutes before there had been a fight between Todd and Iva, and Carl was trying to see how badly Todd had been injured. We got him into the office, but were not able to handle him without his whining, crying and snapping at us. This was not good. We finally got Todd into his crate to settle him down, and for a moment turned our attention to Iva.

Thankfully we found no injuries on Iva except for a scape on her muzzle. It was a totally different story for Todd. We knew he needed to see a vet and after a phone call to an urgent vet, Carl was quickly on his way. Of course I wanted to take him, but we felt that Carl taking Todd was better because the dogs needed to be fed and settled down and I was best to do that - Also, not knowing how long he'd be gone, Carl could take the next day off work, where I can't as easily.

So, I got everyone fed and settled and I waited for news from Carl. He would arrive back home at about 2 AM with Todd who'd had emergency surgery. He has several stitches, and 2 drains in his neck.

The drains were removed on Friday and for the most part, aside from some swelling, the vet said his injuries are healing as well as they can. Todd is being crated most of the time, and is allowed to interact with most of the dogs when going outside, except Iva.

~Inside the urgent vet on Friday~

Unfortunately we don't know what caused this fight. Todd and Iva were the only 2 outside together, as they have been many times. In the more than a year that Iva has been here, there have been no issues between the two of them. What happened and how it happened is only a guess. But my thought is that it was maybe a tennis ball. Carl plays ball with the dogs every evening, Todd plays ball by himself, and one may not have gotten picked up outside. Which is where the fight was.  If one of them had found a ball that had not been collected, and the other wanted it and didn't want to give it up, I think that's why a  fight may have started. I only say this, because later Milo had a tennis ball, and I don't know where he found it - But all this is just a guess.

I am still reeling emotionally from this. I am at a low and feeling heartbroken, discouraged, sad, depressed, guilty and so many other things for so many reasons. And I am worrying about what's ahead as far as Todd's recovery and he and Iva co-existing together. I just hope with some time we will know the answers and can go back to those days we were having, even a week ago. I just hope .... and hope .... and hope some more.

  2. Sending so much sympathy to you and also reminding you that as things can change quickly for the worse they can also do the same for the better. You have absolutely nothing to reproach yourself for and are one of life's heroines in the dog world as I'm sure all readers of your blog would agree. Please be kind to yourself and I am already looking forward to your blog telling us all that given time everything has worked out in the end.
I haven't commented before but follow your lovely blog regularly, especially since I lost my own dog, but I just had to hopefully give you some support and love, just as you do for all your special dogs. X

  8. The same thing happened to us years ago and we never did find out why the fight broke out. But our Benji needed surgery on his neck also. One of our Jack Russells got upset with him, I guess. It all seems like so long ago now and I guess it was almost 20 years ago. Totally unexpected. Sending lots of love and POTP to Todd and hugs to you. ♥♥♥

  9. Oh Kim, my heart aches for the emotional trauma you have experienced and the physical trauma Todd has undergone. I'm also confident that you will come up with a good solution. Don't give in to the temptation to feel discouraged and guilty; these are a waste of time. You all have a solid place in my prayers, and especially for Todd's good recovery.

  11. What a distressing thing to happen. Poor Todd, I do hope that he will recover quickly from his injuries, all will be well and that he and Iva will be good friends again.
You do a wonderful job with caring for all your dogs and you shouldn't for one moment feel anything other than pride in a job very well done. Sadly things do happen, as you say, but hopefully this is a blip in a peaceful home.

  12. So very sorry these sweet dogs had a fight, we had several nasty fights between Cooper and Jake and it is horrendous. I agree with all the comments, not your fault at all. Prayers they will learn to get along with each other and go back to peace and harmony. also that Todd will heal quickly. My heart hurts for both of them and for all the rest of your family. things like this touch everyone in the household. Maybe someone will adopt Todd. fingers crossed

  14. I'm so sorry this happened and that Todd. got injured. Dogs usually move on more or less right away and all is forgotten. Unfortunately, that's not as easy for us humans who have witnessed a dog fight and had to deal with an injured dog. Sending good thoughts and hope that Todd had a good and fast recovery. And peace will return to Golden Pines, I have no doubts about that.

  16. I wish I had the right words for you and what you are feeling. I have been there many times and it is awful. It is hard not to blame yourself or the dogs. It just happens.

My first serious incident, was the worst. You know we had the dogs separated, well, I was on the phone, walked through the separation dog and it didn't close all the way. Next I know, there was this growing rumble. Fiona had sunk her fangs into Blaze's thigh before I could pull her away. For some reason the boys stayed out of it, but that scream from Blaze when Fiona's teeth sunk in had stayed with all these years. I know it could have been so much worse (like if all the dogs were involved) but it took a while to get to that grateful point. It was terrifying.

It took some time, but Blaze healed and fine. And Todd will be too. He's a tough little dude. :) Praying all things settle down quickly and healing will begin for all of you. Thank you for having the guts to post your story. Thinking of you.

  23. Oh No! How upsetting for you. Blame and guilt are normal responses, but not helpful reactions to these incidents, so I do hope you can get past them. Dogs are dogs, and those two simply did what comes naturally. Thank God for good, prompt, veterinary care, and your love and compassion to see them all right. Hoping your next post tells us they're on the mend, and your equilibrium is restored.
