A Manic Monday!

I don't know where to start with the events of my day. I took the day off work and got Maguire to the vet (where this photo was taken). After an extensive exam I was given several scenarios of what could be causing his almost complete loss of the use of his back legs. It included several options to pin point exactly what it is could be which range all the way to seeing a neurologist for a possible MRI. There's the thought that it could be a slipped disc in his back, degenerative myelopathy, or even recurrence of lyme disease that he was treated for when he came into the rescue last year. It was a lot to think about, but for now I've opted for a conservative approach with medications and hope (and pray) that this direction will be effective enough to get him back on his feet.

When I got home I managed to get Maguire inside and let the other dogs out. I was a bit preoccupied and didn't watch which dogs I allowed to be outside the fence off lead--The next thing I saw was Sam rounding the corner and out of sight. I ran after him (interestingly enough Hamlet was behind me) but Sam was too fast and was quickly gaining distance from me. My calling to him with words like "wait, stay, come here, lets get a cookie" all fell on the deaf ears of a renegade that only looked over his shoulder and kept going towards the road. I quickly got the other dogs inside and got my keys to chase him down in my van. I have to mention that during this time Rudi was with Sam. I backed out of the garage almost hitting Wendy (YIKES!) and once down on the road I could see Rudi down the road on the shoulder. When I drove towards her I noticed that she would disappear for a moment and reappear again. I quickly realized what she was doing was telling me where Sam was. Out of breath and nearly hoarse I managed to get his attention by shaking the treat jar that I'd grabbed, he came over to get one and I grabbed him!! YAY!!! I loaded both dogs into my van and returned home, praising Rudi and letting her help herself to as many treats as she wanted!

I would have liked this whole episode to end at that but....When I got back home with Rudi & Sam, I left my van parked outside and got the two inside. I was having problems breathing (I have asthma) and it took several minutes for me to stop coughing and catch my breath. About a half-hour later I heard barking outside and realized it was Carrie Anne, she was inside the van with the windows up!!! In my rush I remembered seeing her in the van sitting on the backseat and have to admit that in trying to hold onto Sam, I totally forgot about her and shut her inside. I'm so thankful that it was not a terribly hot day; I would have had an awful disaster!!

I counted the dogs several times, said many prayers of thanks, officially bestowed the honor of "Hero!!" on Rudi gave out more treats and we all took a nap.

I don't know what the days ahead will bring for Maguire. But for now I'm thankful that he's sleeping peacefully and all is quiet at Golden Pines. Thank-you all for your concern and well wishes Maguire; he and I are both very grateful for them!

  1. Yikes, Kim, I think you and I were switched at birth and I was supposed to be your sister because we are an awful lot alike, calamities and all! But then again, aren't sisters supposed to be completely opposite of one another and (even worse) supposed to hate each other? Either way, I am completely bug-eyed after reading your post because your story reflects what often happens to me: losing my mind, not thinking clearly in the face of utter disaster, forgetting where I am, etc. During my downright silly adventures I always wonder whether I am ready for the nursing home (due to my self-proclaimed diagnosis of the disease otherwise known as altheizmers) or whether I need a vacation. Glad to know that I am simply suffering from a case of the Mondays instead!

  4. Sounds like your crew decided that you needed a little action as a "pick me up". But man, that's a little too much action!

I do hope that all are settling in well tonight. Hang in there. I am really hoping Maguire takes a turn for the better. I have a feeling he will....

    :)

    Best,

  7. That Rudi is one heroic dog!I had a cat once who did her darndest to let me know where her missing sister cat was (locked in a church basement down the road), only I was too dense to figure it out until after the fact. I think animals would have a lot more to tell us and teach us if only we would listen more.

You sure had a heck of a day - I hope you're putting your feet up and congratulating yourself for caring so well for Maguire, finding a way to catch Sam, rescuing Carrie Anne and catching your breath!

  9. Oh my!!! Hoping Maguire heads towards the healing path, and Sam! Where was Sam going? How sweet to have Rudi tip you off! Where did Hamlet end up? Blessings that all are safe in one place.

  12. Holy Calamities! That would be enough activities for a week over here! In a movie, that could be an exciting few minutes, but I know it was not at all funny - in fact, scary. So is asthma, you poor thing. Hope all is peaceful right now, and that Maguire is doing okay. Thinking pawsitive thoughts...
    Big Hugs xoxoxo

  17. Hey Ms. Kim,
What a Memorable monday you had. Our dad cam emphasize with you. He ahs 3 heart stints and he has had to deal with our GReat Escapes on more than one occassion. He's had to drag 6' x 6" x 8' timbers to various locations along our paddock fence to block holes that J.E.B. digs so that we can all go for a walk. fortunately we live in a remote area without much traffic and we all seem to come back home within 45 minutes to an hour; alas, we're usually dripping from our swim in Lake Anna.
We will be praying for Maquire's comfort and mobility. It's rough to have to make realistic choices but the conservative approach is usually the best when all is said and done. Do not second guess yourself or impose any self guilt.

  18. OH MY GOODNESS Kim!! It makes me tired just reading this post :) My little beagle is usually the renegade. She gets that nose of hers to the ground and she turns off her listening ears. Even the snap of the treat jar lid is ignored. I am glad all is well that ends well :) I am thinking of you and Maguire. I remember reading the post when you were deciding whether or not to adopt him and how much your love for him filled each line of that post. I will say a prayer that he is ok. I know how much he means to you.

  19. Wow, Kim, sounds like you had quite a day. My prayers are with Maguire this week, I hope he will be ok. As for Sam, please do us all a favor and tell him never to scare us like that again!
I always keep a treat jar in the car and by the door handy for those moments. While Simba and I where out playing fetch once a swarm of about 4,000 bees started rolling over the hills. Simba--of course--didn't notice and kept playing. I let out a scream of "come" and he looked up at me. I opened the door and grabbed the treat jar and he ran in just in time so that bees hit the door screen. Definetly a scary moment! Ever sense then, I keep a treat jar or box handy! I am still scared it will happen again... I don't mess with bees!

Good thing you heard Carrie Anne barking!
Lets hope things aren't so crazy at Golden Pines tomorrow!

    Blessings,

    Paige
