The Red-White and Blue of Golden Pines

Today is July 4, 2010 - On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country.

We've had a couple of invitations to view fireworks and come for dinner but have declined. I really just want to stay home. However, we are not without patriotism at Golden Pines. I have found that we have "Red, White and Blue" which symbolizes the American flag all around us to help us mark and celebrate the day...

To start, the red of the wine-berries that are all over our property. (By the way, does anyone know anything I can do with these?)

And in the Redwing Blackbirds -- I know, they look a bit orange...
We also have what are considered "red" Goldens like Sam
The white is symbolized in the Queen Anne Lace that's growing in several places
And on my daisies. It is can also be found in the sweet white faces of our senior Goldens like Tanner...
And our Cat "CC" as well--Yes, I know it's hard to believe that we have a cat amongst all the Goldens and Charlie! Finding blue at Golden Pines was a little a little trickier, but it was found on my hydrangea that is blooming. It has been the "crown jewel" in my flower garden this year as I've watched and enjoyed each bloom. I am so glad it forgave me my mistakes that I made with it last year.

There is also the blue sky that we saw this morning at the start of our day.

And finally the feeling of "blue" that comes from the pups like Sheba and myself when I have to leave them behind.

Whatever you are doing, if it's a day you do or don't celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful, fun and safe July 4th!!!

  3. Those are the best kind of 4th of July pictures. I'm going next door for the obligatory burger, but I already warned them I wasn't staying long.

Hope your 4th is happy, and everything you wanted it to be.

  5. Hi - sounds like it's been a tough week (as I scrolled back a bit!) - but love this post. You are so wonderfully honest (to your pals) and also wrote with such clarity about what happened so long ago that furever cemented the dreams of our forefathers into one nation! The reds, whites and blues are beautifully collected from Golden Pines and displayed so artfully - great pix! (I have no idea what to do with those berries, but they are cool-looking!) - Have a peaceful, away-from-the-madding crowds 4th today!

  16. It's always so peaceful to visit Golden Pines. The red , white and blue around you- are the most homey kinds of colors. And home is a good place to be.
We have Queen Annes Lace too- it grows everywhere in our meadows and creeksides. Our Hydranges will not turn the blue like yours, but we love them anyway. We have a white Hydranga and her name is Annabelle. I looked for some red- and found some in our strawberrys and watermelon in the fridge.
We do not have wine berrys like you do- but they look tasty. I think we would just pop them in our mouths.
In town, the famous Molalla Buckeroo rodeo is going on- with the fireworks and crowds of people, but we decided to stay home like you.
Have a peaceful night at Golden Pines and Happy 4th of July.

  19. What a lovely way of illustrating the 4th of July! love the look of the wineberries and your blackbirds are fantastic over there. Glad to read that I am not the only one who makes mistakes with hydrangeas........ mine sulked terribly last year after an over-zealous trimming and didn't even flower. This year it is covered. Phew!

  24. Was in Maryland years ago and had the best time celebrating the 4th of July. My Grandfather had his house all decorated and lots of people got together to celebrate the day. I miss those times but the memories will always stay with me.
