I thought I'd give you an update on Riley. You'll recall that she's the golden that came to us and needed extensive knee surgery. Riley had her first surgery on Thursday, and below is the update that I received from her foster home. It's pretty good news, and I continue to be grateful that she's able to have the surgery and a chance at a healthy, active life. Here is a portion of the e-mail from the foster home:
"I spoke to Dr Walker earlier today, he said Riley's knee was one of the worst he's ever seen. Her condition was allowed to go on so long that the "fix" wasn't able to be 100%. If she had come in earlier, there was a chance that surgery would have made her "normal" but as it is now, we're settling for a compromise.
The malformation of the tibia was so much that he had to do three cuts instead of one, and the groove in the front of the knee where the tendon is now laying is very deep, a little more than expected. Riley's patella is now back in place and her foot placement is 80% better but there was no way to make it 100% better because of what she had to work with. The pain Riley will feel is not so much what they did to her bones, it's the stretching of the muscles in ways they haven't stretched before."I hope you will all send good thoughts and prayers for Riley as she begins this new chapter in her life. She has one more surgery just like this one and a long, hard road to travel, and extensive rehabilitation which won't be easy for her, but it'll be worth it!
I hope you're having a relaxing and enjoyable weekend!
Having survived our first week of Morgan's recovery, I can feel a great deal of sympathy not only with Riley, but especially with her caregiver. This is hard work that calls for lots of planning and much patience.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to them.
We send our best wishes for Riley's recovery and our gratitude for all who are giving her a new chance at life!
ReplyDeleteSending strong healing vibes to Riley-girl!
ReplyDeleteBest of thoughts for Riley. And now I'm off to follow Todd's lead.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely healing thoughts going out to Riley!!
ReplyDeleteI know Riley will have the strength to take on her recovery, she has proven herself by making it this far! I am so glad she is getting her second chance!
ReplyDeleteWe were going to say, Poor Riley, but actually, she's very lucky to have found people who will take the time to help her. All of you are doing such great work to help dogs who may have been euthanised because no one could bother.
ReplyDeleteTodd certainly looks relaxed.

Oh my heart just aches for Riley. I'm so happy that things are progressing for her...just sad to think that someone had her and ignored the medical care she needed. Never too late though! Thanks of the update.
ReplyDeleteTodd. What can I say? Todd! =)
Thanks for the update on Riley. An improvement of 80% will make a huge difference...so glad she is in good hands. 'night Tad.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lot of work for Riley and her foster folk, but will be well worth it, too bad it wasn't taken care of sooner. Sending positive energy to Riley!
ReplyDeleteWish her a very speedy recovery. ♥
ReplyDeleteI had a wonderful German Shepherd who suffered from knee problems and it was so sad when she was in pain...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't afford the expensive treatment and the pain began to increase when she was getting old.

Our Miggy had to have reconstructive sergary as well back in Feb her knee would pop out and some times we were able to pop it back in it was aweful to see this of her so we took her in I dont know the medical term for this but apparently it can happen to all breeds she had the surgery and also had to have some muscle and tendons repaired as well she had to have it vet wrap for weeks have and she was house bound other then to do her buisness for 3 months it was tuff for all of us but mostly for her then after the vet wrap was taken off it left a bad wound from the pressure it was a hole in her leg that was wore the skin away so we had to treat that as well and she had to have a cone on cause she wanted to get at it so in the long run it took 5 months in all and now she is 150% cant tell she had the surgery at all. I hope Riley comes through this with flying colours. Have a wonderful day !
ReplyDeleteWe are sending zillions of healing thoughts to Riley. She deserves this chance, and we are counting on a miracle!
ReplyDeleteThank you for giving us this update Kim. We will keep Riley in our thoughts. And we are keeping the caregiver in our thoughts too, so she has the time and continued strength to keep up with all the physical therapy and all.

I remember the pain our Springer had after her ACL repair and that was nothing compared to Riley's procedure. Fingers and paws crossed for Riley and for the wonderful people who will help her rehab.
