Basic Truths and Observations

It's the end of the first week of making a conscious effort to try and be a bit more mindful of what Carl and I are eating.  I have to admit that I've done pretty well despite that lurking within the cupboards of the office where I work are the remnants of the Christmas baskets we received.  As a result, I have been reminded of the basic truths about eating that I just can't deny which are:

1.  Cake is delicious anytime.
2.  Broccoli tastes better with cheese sauce.
3.  There is no real substitute for butter.
4.  Fruit does make a great dessert--- But it's even better baked with a crisp topping and served with ice cream.
5.  At the end of a long day, when you're tired, worn out and stressed out, something 'light and healthy' can make for a disappointing meal.

These are just my observations after the first week. Todd on the other hand, continues to be stuck on his own observations.
Which are the turkey buzzards that have been flying over our house this weekend.  Each time Todd sees them, he barks and chases them. He's done this so much that now Josh and Charlie are noticing them too.  When they kept coming back, and flying so low, I began to get a little concerned that they might be thinking of Todd as a meal.  Crazy thought?  Probably.  But I looked it up, and read that they won't.  So I'll just let him continue his game as they fly and soar quietly overhead looking for their next meal.
I wonder how they feel about eating healthy?

  1. Chocolate cake is wonderful anytime. We started watching what we eat last year. We both feel so much better - a lot of Aaron's health problems are gone. I still morn the loss of cake, bread and pasta... :D

  2. I love your observations about eating healthy, they are so very true :o)

As for the turkey buzzards, they're ugly buggers, aren't they? Beautiful to watch as they soar around, but ugly when you see them up close!

  4. i agree w/ your basic truths except #2. you made me laugh!

my dogs don't like vultures either - they hate their smell, i think...

  5. My head says oatmeal for breakfast, but if I had chocolate cake, it wouldn't have a chance.

Buzzards prefer victims of hit and run. Jill barks at them too.

  9. Hi Y'all,

My Humans found that limiting amounts and eating what they enjoy is better than going on a "diet".

    Y'all come by now,

  10. My hubby would say that 2 and 3 go without saying. ;-)

And we both agree with 5. Light and healthy means snack until bedtime, or get up because you can't sleep, and eat something.

Healthy? Don't vultures prefer their food with a side of... bugs? haha!

Good luck and have a great week, Kim! :-)

  13. I'm not sure how much Todd weighs, but small dogs can be carried away by other raptors. My vet always warns me to watch out for the eagles and big hawks when we have a tiny puppy.

It is interesting to ponder the diet of a vulture. I guess that "eating healthy" means something different to them!

Our approach to "eating healthy" is to be so active that we can eat lots and lots of almost anything except for things with lots of "bad fats". It doesn't work for everyone but it works for us!

That cake made my mouth water...

  14. Couldn't agree with your observations! I'm on the same track. It sure isn't as much fun but the losing weight is nice.

  15. I have to say that I completely agree with all your observations! I wonder if Todd will be able to tell us if those turkey vultures taste like chicken one day.

  16. Jeepers, did you make that cake?
It makes my mouth so hungry for a bite!
I agree that brocoli must have cheese (i am trying to break that habbit.)
Trying to be healthy is hard- especially when to me- chocolate is comfort food, and I need comfort everyday.

I don't trust those buzzards at all, and anything else lurking too.
But maybe buzzards like stinky stuff. Todd is not stinky- so no problems.

  23. i have discovered "green smoothies!"
they taste delicious. you get pure vitamins. one smoothie a day. then... because your body gets what it really needs.. you can afford to enjoy that cake occasionally! 'all things in moderation' is my motto! we only are here once.
well... unless shirley maclaine is right. lol. and if she's right...
i'm coming back as a chronically thin food taster!
    p.s.
for those new to it... blendtec makes a blender that liquifies spinach, kale etc. then you add fruit.. and you can't even taste the greens! they're delicious!
green smoothie blog is worth checking on. tho they recommend the vita mix blender. i like blendtec.

  24. Hi there, I'm with you about good things to eat-especially anything chocolate. So glad the vultures won't pick up Todd; I know eagles might try. Hope you have a great evening.

  25. Oh Kim... See that chocolate cake at the beginning of your post? I've been known to eat an entire one of those, with little or no help in a 24 hour period. Sad but true. I love your truths and they are so... true. I have just finished week one of eating healthy and I really didn't need to see that Chocolate cake. LOL!
Todd is so adorable. If I was one of those turkey buzzards I wouldn't be able to resist. I'd swoop right down and snatch his cute self up and take him home to live with me. So... if you ever see me in your neighborhood, you might want to leash him... Just sayin' He's TOO CUTE!

  31. Life is too short to worry about the eating 'healthy'

    Butter!
    Butter!!
    Butter!!!

And coffee MUST have half and half!!!!

  32. Healthy eating is much over-rated!
Pass the mashed potatoes please! :)
I really need to get motivated! Keep up the good work!
    Hugs and belly rubs!

  33. Oh the constant call of the chocolate...I know it well. Why is it that we never 'crave' celery or carrots?? Hmmm....

I can't believe how big Todd has gotten. He is so cute! And I think I would be barking at those turkey buzzards as well. They are not so cute!! :(

Stay strong to your health Kim!

  35. I am right there with you on the observations Kim! Butter is the only thing I use on veggies (margarine be damned) and although I gave up sugar when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two years ago, I still look longingly at any dessert I see!
I did however make one big and healthy change this year....I stopped smoking December 27 and so far so good! For now I am celebrating that and letting the rest take care of itself...:)
