Lucas saw the vet this week and all the tests results show that he's in good health--Except for his teeth. My vet commented that she has never seen a dogs mouth in such terrible condition and with so much active infection. A thorough exam of his teeth was difficult to do because he was whining and crying when she pulled back his lips. Lucas has been referred to a veterinary dentist because he is unfortunately going to have to have all or almost all of his teeth taken out. I've called for an appointment and he won't be able to be seen until the 31st. Until then he is on antibiotics and pain medication. Lucas is getting along well with the other dogs and is right in with the crowd for treats (which he swallows whole) and mealtime. It has been a bit of trial and error but I have finally found the right combination of a dehydrated food, mixed with canned that he likes and is able to eat with just a little help from me. All in all, he really has settled in very nicely this week! He will come and sit next to me and put both front paws on my leg, look at me and wag his tail. Needless to say, it melts my heart. But I think he knows he's going to be okay.

Enjoy your Thursday!
Sweet Lucas - he must be in such pain and yet he has been such a sweetheart. What a star he is. Looks like Todd is looking after him ;o)

' Going to be ok '. Wounderful words.
ReplyDeleteI can picture in my mind, him coming up and putting his feet up and looking at you.
ReplyDeleteA big Thank You for sure.
How wonderful that Lucas is getting along with your crew and that he is in good health. It is so unfortunate that his teeth are in such poor condition though. Hopefully they will be able to save a few?
ReplyDeleteThis sure warmed my heart this chilly morning!
ReplyDeleteRowdy does the foot on my lap thing a lot. He is a sweetie pie and I know Lucas is too... will he be able to eat okay once the teeth have been removed or will you have to increase the soft food for him?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures Kim...looks like Lucas has has won Todd over. Poor dog with a sore mouth, do you have to pay for all these vet visits or is it funded? I think you are a saint, a Golden one! ;D
ReplyDeleteIt's not good news about his teeth, but it's wonderful happy news that he feels safe with you. I love the picture of him and Todd. And that hawk photo is very nice!
ReplyDeleteTodd....I just love looking at that little stinker.
Lovely - Ok is a very good thing. I see he and Todd have become fast friends at nap time. Handsome boys.
ReplyDeleteOh..I can see that my heart has been totally grabbed by you ..your four leggeds and all you do.....you are the kind of person that makes life worth living...my house is filled with kitties..I know completely the emotional strength to do what you do....I will think about Mr. L. And his paw all day...thank you for giving these lovely animals a home!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMust be so painful for you both. Lucas is a handsome boy and should of been looked after and cared for by his owner ! Glad he has you and the clan . Hope all goes well.
ReplyDeleteand Toddy will do the rest
ReplyDeletebless you for all your love for these precious dogs
...and your photos were delish...
Wow, the photo of Todd and Lucas reflects all the love surrounding them!
ReplyDeleteHugs to you, special lady...
Sorry I've been MIA...I've been keeping a New Year's resolution...less time on computer, more time on loved ones!!!
xoxo
That's really good new for Lucas (except having his teeth pulled, ouch!). Doesn't take much for the sweet Golden in him to bubble to the top. Nice story Kim. Love the pics too.
ReplyDeleteThat picture of Todd and Lucas is sweet and funny. There is little Todd on what looks like a bed many times bigger than he is and big Lucas looks like he is on a much smaller bed. Glad Lucas is fitting in.
ReplyDeleteCindy
We are so happy for Lucas, hope he gets to keep some of those teeth.
ReplyDeleteI too, hope Lucas can keep some of his teeth! He seems like such a sweet boy. So happy to read that he is in good health. Enjoy the weekend!
ReplyDeleteall of your photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteglad your newest addition is settling in. he's in good hands!
It's good to know that Lucas has settled into the fold so well - but who wouldn't with the care you both give them. Sorry about his teeth, but then left that could cause other issues, so wise decision. Good health to you all....ann.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness he is healthy, beside the teeth condition. Lucas (love the name) is so LUCKY to have found you and Carl to take care of him. You 2 have a great heart. God, has definitely blessed these animals with you and Carl in their lives.
ReplyDeleteHe seems like such a sweet dog. My heart bleeds to know that people get animals and do not take care of them.
On another note. I have taught Roscoe to sing with me. He is so funny. It all started with me coming home and singing to him look what mommy brought for you and the you I would sing it for a while (until I could not hold my breath any longer) and one day he started singing back to me. It is really funny.
Hope you enjoy your time off.
Poor Lucas and his teeth - I bet his breath is strong too...
ReplyDeletePleased he found you guys! Someone needs to look after him in his retirement ((HUGS))
Love Leanne
I'm happy that Lucas has a home where he is loved and can relax, and his wagging tail is a great sign.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky boy Lucas is!!
ReplyDeleteThat poor boy must be in so much pain. Those awful people who owned him probably never even noticed and gave him food he couldn't eat. I'm so glad he's safe now.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures. We're so glad he's going to be okay....even without teeth.
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
Sweet and lucky Lucas. I'm so glad that his teeth will be taken care of... even if that means removing them.
ReplyDeleteI love the vision of him resting his paws on your leg and wagging. He knows love when he has it.
Beautiful photos!
It's just wonderful to think of Lucas starting to relax into his new home and the knowledge he is safe and will be well cared for. Happy news!
ReplyDeleteYou know what? Todd is reaping the benefits of this incredibly nurturing and loving home! Well, you all are.
ReplyDeleteLOVED the photo of the trees at sunset! And Todd and Lucas of course.
The picture of Todd and Lucas... looks like there is peace in the house. Good to see. Love the owl pic too!
ReplyDeleteClearly your home is overflowing with LOVE! Thank you for sharing the story of Lucas...he is a sweetie, as is his chum Todd!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a splendid wintertime weekend...
Warmly,
Judy
I mean hawk... :-)
ReplyDeleteHi there, Loved hearing the relatively good report on Lucas. Our Reggie's teeth are very bad too but not the level Lucas's are. I always gave our dogs big knuckle bones(from the butcher)and that really helped keep the tarter down. So glad you are doing well; loved the photo of the hawk.
ReplyDeleteHave a great evening dear friend.
Love Noreen & Reggie
Great photos.
ReplyDelete*hugs* ♥
We are glad he is fitting in so well and hope his procedure will go off without a hitch. Your photography always astonishes us.
ReplyDeleteAnd mom says to say thanks for your vote of confidence as she strives to get healthy!
AROOOOF!
Boondocks & The Love Shack Pack
That first picture looks like the woods of a fairy tale. And I'm so happy that Lucas is settling in and that there was nothing major wrong with him. I hope he can get through the dental work OK. I know a cat who had to have all his teeth pulled and he is in great shape now.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh poor Lucas! I hope that he feels better soon... that's a rough surgery to go through, but ultimately, it will be for the best... so glad the rest of him is okay though! Keep us updated on his health!

Your photographs are absolutely astounding! I think you're in the wrong profession...
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear that Lucas is settling into the pack. The image of him sitting, facing you with his paws on your lap melts my heart as well.
Lucas has to be one VERY smart dog to have survived the streets of a big city all these years and remained in reasonably good shape with what was probably a minimum of care. I bet he's going to THRIVE under the love and care he gets with you!
The light in your first photo is breathtaking...so lovely!
ReplyDeleteLucas is one lucky pup that you are his guardian angel!
I knew Lucas would love living with you :) I am glad that other than his teeth he is in good health. Enjoy your weekend. We are expecting snow here in Pittsburgh---A good weekend to stay in and sew :)

ReplyDeletePoor guy! So lucky to landed in your lap! Love that photo of him and Todd.
ReplyDeletePoor boy, I hope they can give him some relief with his bad teeth.
ReplyDeleteSounds like he is fitting into the routine nicely, and is showing how grateful he is to have found you and the 'pack'.
~Jo
We are so glad to hear the vet report on Lucas- he is basically in good health except his teeth.
ReplyDeleteHe is on his way to recovery right now!

Isn't it a miracle that Lucas is still alive! Glad he's able to eat and is getting treatment. Guess he'll be on a soft diet for the rest of his life, unless they do doggie dental implants these days? Can't see doggie dentures being viable. Good thing Lucas has someone so knowledgeable to help with his dental issues - and provide all that loving he's been missing.
ReplyDeleteJed & Abby
Sweet Lucas - you're in great hands now. What a sweet picture of Lucas and Todd! And yes, our goldens melt our hearts with their warm trusting and loving eyes:)

what i love most about retiring after 25 years is.. my time is my own! far more important to me than money. i wish you didn't have to work away from home. i don't see how you do all that you do!
ReplyDeleteand beloved lucas.
what's to say... his paws in your lap and that wagging tail... showing thanks mom.
i think todd is turning out to be a little healer all his own. look how he comforted toby after bubba died. now he's sleeping next to lucas. he's just a special wee fellow.
love and hugs and nose kisses,
tammy j
Oh sweet Lucas, I'm so happy someone is finally looking after you. I think you know that now and you are so happy. Blessings to all of you!
ReplyDeleteKim, sounds like your week was like mine...crazy time in dental world!!
ReplyDeleteSorry that Lucas will have to have his teeth removed, but if it makes him feel better I guess that's what needs to happen.
My Gracie has megasophagus and we have to soak her food in water and than it is blended to a malt type consistency, just mentioning this as a possible eating solution for Lucas.
Head to head is a sure sign of contentment...dogs are so swift with this, aren't they!
ReplyDeleteLucas is lucky to have you, to bad about having to loose his teeth. Looks like he's fitting in just fine. Love the hawk :)
ReplyDeleteGlad he's starting to fit in with the rest of the gang.. even that ''bully'' Todd
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to say hi, Kim. I don't have much time in blogland of late, but, I see you are still being your wonderful self.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Oh Kim, I just love that picture of Todd and Lucas napping... and the 1st photo is breathtaking!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad Lucas is settling in and there's nothing more than his teeth to get taken care of.
Enjoy your weekend!
Oh - Lucas is so beautiful and I am so glad you are keeping him. He certainly deserves to be with you, who love him and care for him. xox
