It's Thursday and It's Okay

For many reasons it's always such a relief to me when Thursday unceremoniously arrives.  The hectic and exhaustive pace of getting up early, getting home late and 3 full days at work are behind me.  Ahead is my day off and the weekend after a short work day on Friday.  My life and my time become mine again.
Lucas saw the vet this week and all the tests results show that he's in good health--Except for his teeth.  My vet commented that she has never seen a dogs mouth in such terrible condition and with so much active infection.  A thorough exam of his teeth was difficult to do because he was whining and crying when she pulled back his lips.  Lucas has been referred to a veterinary dentist because he is unfortunately going to have to have all or almost all of his teeth taken out.  I've called for an appointment and he won't be able to be seen until the 31st.  Until then he is on antibiotics and pain medication. Lucas is getting along well with the other dogs and is right in with the crowd for treats (which he swallows whole) and mealtime.  It has been a bit of trial and error but I have finally found the right combination of a dehydrated food, mixed with canned that he likes and is able to eat with just a little help from me.  All in all, he really has settled in very nicely this week!  He will come and sit next to me and put both front paws on my leg, look at me and wag his tail.  Needless to say, it melts my heart.  But I think he knows he's going to be okay.
~Todd & Lucas~
Enjoy your Thursday!

  4. How wonderful that Lucas is getting along with your crew and that he is in good health. It is so unfortunate that his teeth are in such poor condition though. Hopefully they will be able to save a few?

  6. Rowdy does the foot on my lap thing a lot. He is a sweetie pie and I know Lucas is too... will he be able to eat okay once the teeth have been removed or will you have to increase the soft food for him?

  7. Beautiful pictures Kim...looks like Lucas has has won Todd over. Poor dog with a sore mouth, do you have to pay for all these vet visits or is it funded? I think you are a saint, a Golden one! ;D

  14. That's really good new for Lucas (except having his teeth pulled, ouch!). Doesn't take much for the sweet Golden in him to bubble to the top. Nice story Kim. Love the pics too.

  15. That picture of Todd and Lucas is sweet and funny. There is little Todd on what looks like a bed many times bigger than he is and big Lucas looks like he is on a much smaller bed. Glad Lucas is fitting in.

  19. It's good to know that Lucas has settled into the fold so well - but who wouldn't with the care you both give them. Sorry about his teeth, but then left that could cause other issues, so wise decision. Good health to you all....ann.

  20. Thank goodness he is healthy, beside the teeth condition. Lucas (love the name) is so LUCKY to have found you and Carl to take care of him. You 2 have a great heart. God, has definitely blessed these animals with you and Carl in their lives.
He seems like such a sweet dog. My heart bleeds to know that people get animals and do not take care of them.
On another note. I have taught Roscoe to sing with me. He is so funny. It all started with me coming home and singing to him look what mommy brought for you and the you I would sing it for a while (until I could not hold my breath any longer) and one day he started singing back to me. It is really funny.
Hope you enjoy your time off.

  22. I'm happy that Lucas has a home where he is loved and can relax, and his wagging tail is a great sign.

  23. That poor boy must be in so much pain. Those awful people who owned him probably never even noticed and gave him food he couldn't eat. I'm so glad he's safe now.

  25. Sweet and lucky Lucas. I'm so glad that his teeth will be taken care of... even if that means removing them.

I love the vision of him resting his paws on your leg and wagging. He knows love when he has it.

    Beautiful photos!

  30. Hi there, Loved hearing the relatively good report on Lucas. Our Reggie's teeth are very bad too but not the level Lucas's are. I always gave our dogs big knuckle bones(from the butcher)and that really helped keep the tarter down. So glad you are doing well; loved the photo of the hawk.
Have a great evening dear friend.

  32. That first picture looks like the woods of a fairy tale. And I'm so happy that Lucas is settling in and that there was nothing major wrong with him. I hope he can get through the dental work OK. I know a cat who had to have all his teeth pulled and he is in great shape now.

  33. Oh my gosh poor Lucas! I hope that he feels better soon... that's a rough surgery to go through, but ultimately, it will be for the best... so glad the rest of him is okay though! Keep us updated on his health!

  34. Your photographs are absolutely astounding! I think you're in the wrong profession...

So glad to hear that Lucas is settling into the pack. The image of him sitting, facing you with his paws on your lap melts my heart as well.

Lucas has to be one VERY smart dog to have survived the streets of a big city all these years and remained in reasonably good shape with what was probably a minimum of care. I bet he's going to THRIVE under the love and care he gets with you!

  35. The light in your first photo is breathtaking...so lovely!

Lucas is one lucky pup that you are his guardian angel!

  44. Isn't it a miracle that Lucas is still alive! Glad he's able to eat and is getting treatment. Guess he'll be on a soft diet for the rest of his life, unless they do doggie dental implants these days? Can't see doggie dentures being viable. Good thing Lucas has someone so knowledgeable to help with his dental issues - and provide all that loving he's been missing.

  48. Kim, sounds like your week was like mine...crazy time in dental world!!
Sorry that Lucas will have to have his teeth removed, but if it makes him feel better I guess that's what needs to happen.
My Gracie has megasophagus and we have to soak her food in water and than it is blended to a malt type consistency, just mentioning this as a possible eating solution for Lucas.
