A New Addition--A Girl Named Annie

When it rains, it really does pour...Along with Sam's surgery coming up on Wednesday, on Sunday we welcomed a new addition, a 13 year old girl named Annie.  Her owner, who is named Steve, lost his wife about 5 years ago, lives alone and has stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  As his health has deteriorated, he has found it harder and harder to care for Annie and so he made the difficult choice to give her up.  And, as heartbreaking as it is to think about, Steve wanted to make sure Annie had a home prior to his passing away.  It was a sad meeting and I hope in our conversation I was able to assure him that Annie would have a good home.  I also told Steve that he could contact me anytime to find out how Annie was doing.

~Annie and Our Gang waiting for dinner~
Annie is a lovely, confident and well cared for treasured Golden.  Steve and his wife got her, and her partner who was named Sid (who passed away last year) when they were about 8 weeks old.  Annie is pretty well mannered, and hopes for a bite of whatever it is  you're having, and she loves to sleep on the bed.  She met our gang, who are pros at meeting new dogs, with no problems, and fits right in.  The only problem is Lucas.  He has dusted off every single one of his hormones and will not, and I mean will not leave her alone!  Annie seems to take it all in stride.  But I have to be honest and say that his amorous behavior is causing a lot of stress for everyone because of his barking, panting and pacing and he will not listen to any of our corrections--And we have tried every one that we can think of.

Sadly, I don't think it's fair to Annie or Lucas if he can't get his hormones in check.  If he cannot in a couple of days, I will have to ask the rescue to find another home for her.  I hope this doesn't happen because I am totally smitten with a beautiful blonde Golden named Annie who when I look at, reminds me of my beloved girl Kasey--And whose eyes I look into and want to get to know better.

  1. Oh, Annie is beautiful! I hope Lucas gets over being love-struck so she can stay. I know you'll give her a good home. That's like the "border" we got when our church friend passed away. Buddy promised him we would take care of Sarah ...and we do.

  2. Oh, such a sad story. I hope that Lucas can learn to love her in a sisterly way so she can live with you. She's just so beautiful, he can't help himself I guess.

  6. How sad for Annie's owner, especially having had her from such a young age - for her too, she must wonder why she no longer see's him. On a positive note she is in a great home, I hope it works out for all.

  7. This is such a heartbreaking story, for Steve and for Annie - but if it were not for the loving home that you're willing to share, it could be so much worse. Here's hoping Lucas settles down and Annie settles in!

  8. Isn't Lucas the one you are having problems with cat chasing? Perhaps the rescue could rehome him instead of Annie.

Maybe his behavior issues are his way of telling you that it's time for him to move on....?

    just a thought

  16. She looks like a real love. Maybe the vet has something to calm Lucas' hormones so that she can stay. It sounds like she had a loving home and now it's gone. So very sad.

  18. Annie Girl looks like such a sweet heart! Its so sad that the owner is so ill. Sad for both Annie and him.
It was very responsible of him to make sure she gets a home.
I hope everything works out. I agree that maybe the vet can prescribe something to make him not so frisky- or maybe there is something you can spray on her or feed her to make her not smell so good to him.
She has such longing in her deep soul

  19. Hi Kim good catching up with you and the mob of dogs.
Lucus will settle down I am sure. Now that is such a sad story of the owner and Annie. Just give Lucas time, she proably reminds him of his younger years:))

  20. We're both sorry and glad for Steve & Annie; sorry for the separation, but glad for the peace of mind it must give Steve to know Annie will be loved and cared for.

We had the same thought as Nancy K, given Lucas' cat fixation. Assume Annie has been spayed, so wonder what is setting Lucas off? Perhaps just a bath would wash off what ever scent is driving poor Lucas bonkers? If he's trying to act on his amorous impulses, it may be resolved once she snaps at him a few times to repel any unwanted advances. As the other boys apparently are not similarly affected, is there a chance Lucas is on some meds that are affecting his sense of smell? Maybe her liquid eyes just get to him, too. Good luck!

  22. Annie has such a lovely face. I know it must have been heartbreaking for her owner to to rehome her, but I also know she will get wonderful care and lots of love living with you (or that you will find somewhere equally special if Lucas continues his antics).

Give Anniea pat and hug from us in New Zealand.

  25. Wow, what a story. I will definitely pray for Steve. I will also pray for Lucas and Annie and for you. I am hoping that you can keep her. She is beautiful and has already been through so much, with one owner passing and now seeing herself in a new home to adjust to.
I really hope you do not have to call the rescue and everything gets resolved.

I love visiting here and all your rescues...

so when are we going to take those portrait shot....

  29. Im so proud of Steve for taking on this hard issue early so that Annie didnt have to go through another owner dying and then be left wondering what happened, kudos for him for resolving this early. Its sad but im so greatful there are people like you to be there for the sweet seniors. I do agree with giving her a bath and washing her ummm "lady parts" really well. My parents had this problem when they brought in new girl doxies even though they were spayed - my mom always felt that a good bath helped lol who knows if it works but worth a shot. Im sorry its stressful.

  30. This is so serious because she has already been displaced. Maybe Lucas needs one of those e collars that gives a vibration when you push a button. NOT A SHOCK COLLAR people, a vibration collar. I've seen Cesar use them and you can put it on your own skin and it's not painful, it just grabs their attention and redirects them. It might work when he's bugging the cat as well.

  31. Hi Y'all,

Hope Annie can stay with y'all...it is so difficult to be alone, dying and have to re-home the one companion that can offer comfort.

I'll keep Annie and her human in my prayers and hope Lucas gets his act together. Hope one of the suggestions others offered will help.

  33. Welcome to Annie! She is lovely and I hope she is able to stay with you :o)

  34. I thought Lucas was the one that perhaps needs a new home. Didn't he chase the cat too? He may just be too much of a "street" dog to fit in. And who's to know how he would react to the next female you need to help. This could be an ongoing problem that would cause you stress you really don't need. And Steve, well...
Just read the comment about the shock collar, might be a good idea.

  38. oh why does it always have to be so hard? but it usually always is.
a few of the suggestions are really good ones... the vet may have the answer and it's done. it's worth checking! i hope it's that easy.
    they both deserve your home.
to know you're dying and to know your beloved pet has a good forever home. that would be so comforting.
yet nobody wants little toothless lucas who has suffered so much already.
    at a loss for you!
a great bear hug coming your way,

  39. I'm with Inger on this one Kim. Maybe though there is a 'pill' that will lower Lucas' 'drive'. I assume has been 'fixed'? Good luck on this one Kim....a difficult place to be in for you.

  40. Kim,
What a tragic story for both Steve and his wife; very heartbreaking for Annie!
I have such confidence in you and beleive you will know what is best. Is there anything Lucas can take to 'cool his jets'?
    keep us posted! UGH!

We sure hope that Lucas can cool his jets, Annie looks like a sweetie and what a tragic situation. We feel very bad for Steve, we can only imagine how hard of a decesion that was.

  45. Gorgeous girl! Hope it works out....she is precious!

  46. I know you assess the situation much better than I could but it seems to me that Lucas's problems with the cat and now with Annie might suggest that he is the one to depart. His behavior might get worse and really ruin the dynamics at Golden Pines.

Disclaimer: I must admit that I am totally taken with Annie who has already lost so much. I want her there with you.

  47. Kim at Golden Pines....
I used to own a BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE German Shepherd/Golden Retriever cross named Shadow. She died nearly two years ago on June 15th. Her fur was "blond", like the Golden Retriever's. In your last picture of Annie, I can almost see Shadow!! Tears are welling in my eyes now....

  48. Annie must so miss the people that have been there for her life, so many losses. She needs a constant. I remember Lynn at Rocky Creek said when her guy got to excited she rubbed Vicks all over his nose. Maybe give Lucas something to smell that he does not like when he starts with the romance.

  50. Hi Kim, Oh those eyes-man, oh man, she could steal any heart. I'll be hoping Lucas gets bored with her so she can stay. You and your man are true jewels-you simply amaze me! I know there will be a good outcome for her.
Hugs, Noreen-give her some love for me. xxxooo

  51. Oh Kim, Annie is beautiful and she looks like such a special girl! I will say a little prayer that Lucas calms down and all will go well very soon.
How brave of Steve to think of his girl Annie first and how lucky he was to have you come into his life to care for Annie.
I will keep Sam in my prayers that his surgery goes well and he recovers quickly.

  54. Annie is lovely. Sounds like now that Lucas has gotten rid of his painful teeth, he's starting to get interested in other things. Maybe the boy needs a cold shower and a snap from Annie. Fudge gets that way sometimes even though all the girls here are fixed. Samba sets him straight.

  55. We hope that Lucas lets his hormones get dusty again, so you can keep Annie. She sure is pretty. So sad that she had to leave her master, but what an unselfish sacrifice he made to try to place her before he meets his maker. You are good people.

  56. My heart goes out to Annie and Steve. What a hard thing to do, to give up a loving dog at a time when that love can be so comforting. Makes me cry.

  57. That was the ultimate act of love by Steve. Annie looks like such a sweetheart... her eyes are incredible. I hope that Lucas settles down. Is he neutered? I'm assuming that he his so maybe he'll calm down after the pack readjusts to a new girl in their midst. I hope so!

  58. This is so sad on so many accounts it made me cry. I do hope Annie gets to stay. It is so difficult on a dog (pet) to have to start over and adjust to so many new homes.

Steve must be a wonderful person for still thinking of Annie's well being even though I am sure he would have been more secure with her there. I commend him and my prayers will be with him. My second to my last boyfriend, passed away with esophageal cancer(both of my last two bfs passed away). It was absolutely heart-breaking as I watched him (he had to do it himself) find homes for all of his treasured and beloved pets. He was ultra close to them and they were his rock. But he had to know they were in good homes before he went. The world definitely could use a lot more people like these two men! My heart and prayers go out to Steve and his family and to you all for a smooth transition with Annie.
