Cissy Arrives at Golden Pines

There is an Albert Einsten quote that I read several days ago that goes:

"The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing."

For several reasons that quote stuck with me and it ran through my mind when I was contacted by the rescue on Friday afternoon about taking a senior girl that was in a Virginia shelter.
The timing could not be worse with Carl still recovering, my feeling so worn out, and other things that life is demanding of me. But when I heard Cissy's story and saw her pictures like the one above, I could not "look on and do nothing," and so without any hesitation whatsoever, I agreed.

So after a very, very long day on Saturday, we welcomed Cissy to Golden Pines. As you can see in her photos, she has been very severely neglected. She was turned into the shelter by her 'owner' and I will only say that I have counted yesterday among the days that I marveled at how incredibly undeserving of the label “human” some people can be.
And with that I will also spare you the details of was matted within her coat, and just say that a friend met me at a 'dog-wash' where Cissy was cheered on by everyone in the shop that kindly donated everything that we needed to give her a really, really good bath.
I do not know what Cissy's story will be. Of course I am worried about her.  All the dogs, including Todd, are very subdued around her.  I know she is really not feeling well, and has many medical problems that will hamper a quick recovery, if one is meant to be. But as I sit here and look at her sleeping soundly, I am taken by her sweet old face and I'm grateful because I know that she is safe and has a warm bed to sleep on.  And because I have no doubt that for however long she is with us, her story will end with someone who cares about what happens to her. And to me, that's what's most important.

  3. How sad, I am so glad you were able to help rescue Cissy. I believe some people should not be allowed to have dogs. I hope she can recover from the abuse.

  7. Have lurked for a long time but with this last post I just want to say thank you for doing what you do.

Whatever difficulties Cissy may face she will do so knowing she is loved and cared for by you and your husband (who I trust is feeling better each day).

I do not or will not understand how cruel people can be to be of the most beloved animals such as a dog, and all they want in life is to be loved.......Shame on them....You Kim have such a big heart towards dogs and for that I love you..... Bless you for taking in yet another old girl, at least Cissy can feel warmth and love for ever how long she is with you.......Blessings Francine.

  19. wow Kim,
My heart breaks for what Cissy has endured--as someone mentioned above 'futility' just sums up her look. My heart also swells, because of what you are doing. I help when I can, but usually it is just a brief stay and I know how much time and effort that takes--but you--you are constantly going the extra mile and putting into action the things that make a difference in a huge way for these dogs.

Sorry for the long sentence. ha. I pray Cissy will rebound and have some quality time being loved on. She needs it and deserves it.

    Take care,
    Tammy

  21. I could echo this situation a thousand times over, after seeing the amount of neglect humans inflict on their so called 'beloved pets', I have seen it all.
Thankfully there are angels like you and Carl with huge hearts, and an undying dedication to nuture these sweet animals back to health, and give them all the love and attention they truly deserve.
You are special people who walk amongst us, and Cissy is one of the most fortunate ones.
    Thank you.
    Hugs,

  22. It must be the weekend for hard luck stories. A blog friend in England is trying to help raise funds for a Greyhound returned to them who was hit in the head so hard his skull was fractured. Really, what is wrong with people?

I am glad Cissy has a place with you, at least for now, and that her final days will be in a soft place, whether that's at your house or years later at someone else's!

  23. I really do not understand how some one can do this . Animals are so loving and innocent . It makes me furious . She is such a sweet looking thing , she now has a chance now that she is with you and your clan and that makes me happy ! I know she will be happy , well looked after and loved ! Give her a hug from Miggs and I !

  32. Kim,
You are exactly right when you say her story will end with someone who cares about what happens to her.
Sometimes I really lose all faith in how people can be so cruel to animals and get away with it.
I thank-you for taking Cissy in and giving her a last chance of being loved and cared for.
I've said it before and I'll say it again you are the sweetest angel I've ever known because I really feel I do know you.
Take care and give Carl a big hug to boost his spirits on a speedy recovery.

  56. Sweet old girl. And I say that with the upmost respect. I love knowing as you wrote your blog that she was sleeping, probably the most restful, worry free sleep she had had in along time. She truly looked peaceful. I agree and am so grateful that she has golden pines to give her some love and peace. She may well sleep for days. I know she is mentally and physically worn out.

  64. Some bipedal, largely hairless, mammalian life forms should not be allowed to own a pet rock much less anything living be it dog, cat, bird, fish, nightcrawler or gerbil. With any luck Cissy will meet this "person" at the bridge; lead and leave him/her in a briar patch then come back and wait for you.

Last fall my "we're almost ready to head for the Ducks game" sister called in a semi panic. In background someone or something was howling like a banshee. Within a half hour we were looking at a furball about the size of my fist, still yowling with outrage and overflowing with cattitude. And I was heading for the local Fred's for kitty formula. she's a lot quieter now but that scrap of fur is still hanging on with all four paws and that cattitude. Like I said; some folks shouldn't be let anywhere near anything living.

In fairness, we got the kitten because sis has three boxers and the nephews live in apartments.

  76. I get so tired and so angry when I see dogs arrive at the shelter I volunteer at who have been left behind because of their age or simply because they are an inconvenience. All pets deserve to be treated as if they are a lifetime commitment and in my opinion there has to be a really, really good reason why pets have to be surrendered. So glad you rescued that poor girl!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I wish the 'humans' who did this to Cissy could be treated the same way they treated this dog.. no reason for this to happen.. gets me angry.. all pets want to do is love us.. why can't people do the same in return??
