The Rocking Chair

A perfectly quiet weekend that some would probably see as a boring one.  To me, it was much needed time to think, reflect, spend time with the dogs, take a few naps and recharge my inner batteries.  We spent time on the front porch for the first time this year and watched the world go by.
For me there's just something about sitting in a rocking chair in the warmth of the afternoon sun. Maybe it's from seeing too many movies or reading too many books. Or maybe it's just because I'm overly sentimental because my siblings and I used to love to do it at my Grandfather's house when I was growing up.  Whatever the reason, for me sitting on a porch in a rocking chair and rocking is therapeutic--I find the repetition of it all soothing rather than monotonous.  In thinking about it, I guess that it's probably much the same way that runners feel with the repeated motion of their feet hitting the pavement.  My mind really benefited from just sitting, rocking, mulling over the weeks events, letting the thoughts and feelings come to the surface and be put into perspective or to just let them go.
It all really helped. And of course the dogs helped too--With a face like Todd's (below) how could it not?? But I think I'm ready to rejoin the human race.
I hope you had a good weekend too.
~Annie~

  1. Hi Kim,

I'm so sorry about Lucas. It's never easy and it's always a shock when it comes out of the blue.

Glad you got to spend some quiet time enjoying the sun. Everything in your neck of the woods is so green!! Gorgeous! It's freezing cold and still snowing here.

    Best,

    C

  20. I have been trying to fix up our back porch as a little sanctuary for us to sit with our dogs. We've enjoyed a few days out there - no rocking chair, but just a little peace and quiet.

  21. Dad does that front porch thingy and talks to us, and it's quite the good time, but looking at a wide eyed terrier face always bring one back to reality, but in a lot better mood, cause it just makes you smile!

  23. I don't have a rocker outside but I surely do enjoy sitting on the porch soaking up the view, the sunshine and sipping a lemonaide. Reading a good book on the porch is enjoyable too.
Looks like you have lots of company on that porch and a stunning view to admire. So glad the weather is cooperating.
You have taken on such a worthy cause, but one that brings much loss. I hope the joys outweigh the pain. Hugs and healing to you Kim.

  27. i wonder if whomever invented the simple rocking chair realized what a healing gift it would be to the world... from presidents to queens of rescued dogs...
that little face smiling up at you with paws on your knees...
    well. that completed the prescription.
    hugs dear heart.

  28. I am glad that you had a peaceful weekend after your terrible loss last week. You are right - a rocking chair is probably a lot like exercise - for pedaling a bike. After K died, I pedaled and pedaled and pedaled. I'm glad tat you and your pups rocked away the weekend on your beautiful porch.

  35. We have two big rockers on our porch Lee will rock and rock. We have pillows in them and sometimes she takes an afghan out if it is chilly. I have to watch that my tail is not under. It is sad to read that Lucas had to go to the bridge. He always made us smile with his toothless grin. Rest in Peace Lucas.
