Spellbound

Our Saturday was off to an early start with the dogs favorite game of 'chuckit.'
Even at the start of the day, the heat we've been having quickly wore out the dogs.
The rest of the day was spent mostly inside where it was cool. It ended when I let them out for the last time and my eyes caught the lazy, drifting method of flight of the lightning bugs.  Each year I write about the arrival of fireflies or lightning bugs as they are known in the south.

Even though it was late and I was tired, I got a little excited because it just can't be summer without lightening bugs.  To me there is just something about watching their luminescent magic on a warm, muggy summer night with the myriad of stars shimmering overhead against the back-drop of near total darkness.  I looked down at the dogs and said something to them about how good it was to see them for the first time this year.  They just looked at me with bored indifference.
But just like when I was a kid, I am spellbound by them.

  5. Happy Sunday Kim, I love reading that the lightning bugs are back; when we'd visit Tenn. we always loved seeing them. I'd trade Cicadas any day for them! Love seeing your pups have such a large area to play in; I haven't taken Hunter out alone yet for a walk-still a bit gun-shy.
Did get out on a bike ride though(almost 6 miles) and we are taking Hunter over to Lily's to play shortly.

  6. Reminds me of the good times too. So cool to see them lifting off the lawn as evening comes.
The heat and humidity does wear a body out quickly. It is definitely summer.

  8. I have never seen a firefly. Butt my MOM lived in Virginia for a little over a year and she just LOVED them. She could sit for hours just taking it all in. Thank you for the wonderful reminder and memories for my MOM.

  10. Fireflies are pure magic to me. I'm glad you get to enjoy them. I miss them. They don't live here in Oregon, but they exist in Maine where i spent my childhood and young adulthood. They're one more splendid thing about summertime!

  11. SHE loves lightning bugs. One of these summers....SHE might get there.

Actually, it's a wonder there are any left with all the ones SHE caught as a child and inadvertently killed.

  14. I haven't seen the lightning bugs here yet. Seeing them for the first time always gives me the same feeling I get when I hear the spring peepers in early spring. I love living where we have four defined seasons.

  18. We have never seen a lightning bug or firefly. We find them most mysterious and love hearing about them. Maybe someday a few of them will head our way just for a flyby. We would love that.

We are sooo happy that the day has come again when the lightning bugs have come to visit you. They are sooo magical-- We have been on pins and needles waiting for when you would tell us they came! We are so happy with you!!! And we think the doggies are happy too.
We don't have any lightning bugs except for the ones you sent to us last year- in that jar- and they are still happy little bugs and make us happy too!

  36. We love fireflies too. With the woods behind us they look magical on a warm summer night. We usually see them around Memorial Day but this year we haven't seen one yet. I think it may be because of all the rain.
