CC--The Most Tolerant of Cats

Our little cat CC is probably one of the most neglected things at our house.  Now, don't get me wrong, she's fed a good quality food, has a warm place to sleep, and we make sure she is always kept safe.  But for the past 13 years, CC has pretty much blended into the background and doesn't get the attention that the dogs do--But she's an extremely easy going and laid-back cat and has always seemed okay with that.  All of the dogs, regard her as part of the pack, and for the most part leave her alone -- Yes, there is Todd who thinks she's a good playmate, and of course Shadow thinks she'd make a pretty good meal, but CC is very tolerant and takes all of this in stride, never complaining.

But even for this mostly ignored cat, it was easy to notice that CC wasn't feeling well last week. A food bowl that usually gets licked clean by one of the dogs, became a little snack instead because she wasn't eating.  Added to that were a few very uncharacteristic "accidents" and CC sleeping in out of the way places.  It all led us to the vet on Saturday and a not so encouraging diagnosis, kidney failure.  We were sent home with an IV to keep her hydrated and the most tempting food we could find to hopefully get her to eat.  So far, it's not working, but we're not giving up, and I hope that this most special and unique cat isn't either.

  5. Poor CC. Our Baggy started having kidney problems about 3 years ago (when he was 16). We changed his diet to a low protein diet and he has been fine since (he is nearly 19). I hope you can find a similar solution for CC.

  8. Dear CC, usually when a cat chooses to sleep anywhere other than the usual place, they are not 100%, hope things improve for you all. Cheers from Jean

  12. Sending along prayers and hugs to you Kim. Having gone through this before with cats...it is unusual for them to all of a sudden start sleeping in strange places. I sure do hope that the IV will help and that she will begin to eat more!!

  13. We used fluid therapy to see our Siamese cat Cindy through kidney failure a few years ago. We wrapped her like a burrito on the dining table, hung the IV bag from the chandelier. She didn't time it at all, but it helped slow the progression of the disease. I hope CC feels better, and that she rallies under your loving care. Hugs to you.

  23. Poor CC :(

Small Cat has moderate to severe kidney failure and this is managed by half a tablet a day of benazecareflavour 5mg. When it started (soon after we fostered her from the rescue centre) she also had a quarter of a Cerenia tablet every four days or so to perk her up if she was off her food, but she doesn't need them any more. We don't give her any special food because she didn't like it - so she has James Wellbeloved dry food for senior cats (she's 17) and just one sachet daily of wet food.

I hope CC feels better soon and that her condition can be managed with medication.

    xx

  30. Kidney failure is SO common in cats, poor love. One of my old cats, many years ago, was diagnosed with kidney problems before it got too bad. I took him off all commercial cat food and cooked him offal and brown rice in the slow cooker (disGUSTING smell!) and he lived for another two years. Unfortunately they put a lot of salt in commercial food and that's what can be the problem. Fingers crossed for CC! x

  34. Man oh man Kim, you just can't catch a break, can you?
CC must be an amazing cat to put up with your ever changing pack. I know cats like consistency.
Kidney failure is the most common problem with cats this age. I have lost three to this. One I was able to keep going for two years with fluids, meds and special foods. Had to hand feed him baby food at one point to get him over a slump. Cats require such a high protein diet that the kidneys are usually the first thing to go.
I wish you and CC well.
