The Berry Patrol

Growing around our property, we have wild-black-raspberries, and "The Berry Patrol" let me know that they were finally ripe.  We have one good-sized patch near the woods with more canes scattered here and there around the barn and along the edge of our driveway.
~The Berry Patrol, Sheba, Charlie and Josh~
None of these areas produce large amounts of berries, as they are not managed by us at all; they are overgrown and compete with weeds, opportunistic vines and other brambly-type bushes.  But there are plenty for us and even enough to share.
If there's a down side to the berries it's that they're not the easiest to pick because there are sharp thorns and some of the bushes are buried so deeply in a thicket of brambles that it makes getting to them pretty tricky. Unfortunately.
~Sheba finding her way into the berry patch~
But still… wild black raspberries. I need to hurry up and pick them before they're gone so I can make my traditional cobbler, muffins or just enjoy them by themselves.
All of us are enjoying the warmth of the sun, and these summer days, especially Charlie (below) who is scheduled for his summer haircut in a few days.

  6. I don't understand it - my dogs will not eat them. Do they need to be a long haired dog. I know that sounds like a dumb question, but, why is that? The berry patch is pretty dangerous, snag-wize, but the few we do get are quite tasty. Charlie looks like he's really ready for that haircut.

  15. Oh, Kim, you make me miss my fluffy butts and our rambles through the woods. Sidney and Leo loved the honeysuckle in the spring.

  16. OH boy Kim I would be out there all day long just eating and eating your berries cos I love all fruit...when the apples are ripe at our house, I always try to sneak out to the tree and eat the apples on the ground.

  17. It's been so long since I've had fresh raspberries or blackberries. I Used to pick them and eat them when I was a kid and my dog ate about as many as I did.

  20. Hi Y'all!

We have wild huckleberries and blackberries in the mountains, blackberries here at the shore.

We try to stay out of the sun here deep in the southeastern low country where we are baking in triple digit temps. I only go out long enough to take care of business, then in to lay around in the air conditioning. Even before daylight it's too hot for much in the way of play.

I think Mother Nature is confused and thinks we are supposed to be desert, 'cause she sure is trying to turn us into one.

    Y'all come on back now,

  23. We used to live someplace that had wild blackberries - big and juicy ones. What a treat!!!! We'd pick while the dogs nibbled. I'm so glad that you and your dogs are enjoying your wild blackberries!

  24. Wild raspberries, how wonderful and a patrol to let you know when they are ready to pick. That's really having it all laid on for you.
Phil of often talks about the wild berries that grew in and around their small holding in England. Nothing like that here although blackberries have taken over in our southwest and become a noxious weed. They were of course introduced from the UK years ago by early settlers.

  25. We have wild raspberries here too. We just let the birds, deer, fox...and anybody that comes by to have them.
