I've left you all nearly a week without an update on the Barkalot Brothers. My apologies for that. I've not been feeling well, and have even missed work. I'm feeling a bit better this evening.
But thank-you so much for sharing your experiences, candid thoughts and support on my last post; they went a long way. They helped me to articulate my thoughts and feelings about returning George and Abe. They also gave me and the coordinator from the rescue, a few things to consider. At this moment, Abe and George being returned is on hold.
Abe returned to the vet on Friday for another glucose curve test. He failed. His glucose was so low that they had to feed him to bring the level up. We've decreased the insulin, and increased his food.

We all know that Labs live to eat, but Abe really is hungry and his continuing to lose weight is a concern too. The special/prescription food that Abe eats, I think, has no nutritional value, so it's not a surprise that he's hungry all the time. Abe goes back to the vet on Friday for another test.

Paul (previous owner) was contacted about returning Abe and George to him. He assured the rescue that he's financially able to provide for them. However, he was going back into the hospital today (Tuesday) for a couple of more days of tests and should be home in a day or so. This raised the nagging concerns I have about his continuing to care for Abe and George, concerns which the foster-home-coordinator for the rescue also shares.

As I said, as it stands right now, we're on hold until the end of the week. Lab Rescue is in favor of their return to their former home. However, the concerns we all share about Abe and George's ongoing care is first and foremost and will again be discussed with Paul. And, the foster home coordinator feels strongly that we need to get Abe's diabetes stabilized as well. So, whether they will be back home in time for Christmas is anyone's guess.
It is such a confusing situation. I'm so glad you guys are in charge.
ReplyDeleteSo difficult to decide what to do....
ReplyDeleteTodd looks angelic in that photo....a golden angel.
Christmas with you is in my eyes what you all need and want so much. Hope it works out that way, and his sugar levels even out.
ReplyDeleteoh darling girl... I'm sorry to hear that you've been ill.
ReplyDeleteas the years go by and my own stamina lessens you are even more amazing to me! I love the pictures today. they're beautiful with the cozy Christmas lighting. Abe and George are in your good hands. and I know it must be a challenging time for their owner. but if he could have them returned healthy it would be better. and that is something to work toward. patience is key perhaps. thank you for posting here even if you don't feel like it! we appreciate you. sending love! XO
I am glad you are feeling better today but am so sorry that you are going through this problem with Abe and George. I know how it must tug on your heartstrings for all concerned. .
ReplyDeleteAbe and George are very fortunate to have ya'll in their corner! I'm sure you will make the best decision for them.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you haven't been feeling well. It seems the situation with Abe and George doesn't have a simple solution. Maybe the rescue can place them back in their former home as a forever foster so they can still maintain some control over their care. I'm sure that whatever is decided will be good for the boys.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't sound like the previous owner really has things under control. While he might give the dogs the attention and care they need, while he's sick and in and out of hospital who's caring for the dogs and how invested are they in their care? It doesn't sound like a safe situation for the dogs.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that you have been under the weather Kim. I do hope that you will soon be feeling better. You'll need all your stamina to make the right decision for Abe and George. It looks as though it won't be easy to make a long reaching decision about the boys at the moment. If Paul has continuing health problems and needs even occasional stays in hospital, and then recovery time, he isn't going to be able to care for the boys properly, unless he has excellent and reliable back up.
ReplyDeleteFor the time being I think that they will be better staying with you. We know that they will both receive the best love, care - and companionship possible.
Could you let Paul visit them? So hard for everyone.
ReplyDeleteWhat's best for the boys is utmost in everyone's heart as it should be. You are a blessing to them as well as to us all.
ReplyDeleteWe sure hope you are feeling better. Being stressed on top of being sick is not a good thing. The Abe/George situation is quite the dilemma. Mom says her gut tells her now is not the right time for them to go home. Paul needs to demonstrate that he will be home on an ongoing basis and ready AND able to give those two boys what they need. All the best.

We hope Abe gets his blood sugars under control. Hope you feel better too. I can hardly imagine having my doggies taken from me because of my health or inability to care for them. But you must do right for the dog's health too. Tough situation, for sure!
ReplyDeletewe will keep our paws crossed for everyone and that things will work out in what ever way is best for the boys

Does Paul bark a lot also?
ReplyDeleteHello, it is a difficult decision. I wish Abe and George and the previous owner Paul all the best. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy weekend ahead!
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling really well again soon. Thanks for the update on George and Abe. It certainly is a difficult decision.
ReplyDeleteNancy
Thank you for the update (such tough decisions!), and we hope you are feeling all better soon. ♥
ReplyDeleteI am trying to fight off my second cold of the season, and feeling pretty crappy and bummed about that! I can usually go a whole winter without having a cold at all!
Thank you for sharing. I have been wondering. I am so glad that Abe's diabetes must be gotten under control first. And the former owner's return to the hospital is another big worry. It seems like, if his relatives gave up the dogs once because they were too much while he was in the hospital, it could happen all over again. What a difficult situation.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope that you feel better very soon.
I hope everything is better.
ReplyDeletethank you for following tweedles all these years Kim
xoxo
Hope you feel better soon. This is a terrible time to get sick. Thanks for the update. I totally agree that no move should be taken until the diabetes is well under control and Abe is stable. And I can't foresee that happening before Christmas. At this time Abe's health and well being must be the most important consideration.
ReplyDeleteDear Abe and George,
ReplyDeleteHow lucky you are that so many people care for you! We are sure you will wind up in the right place, and even if the current place you are resting your paws at night is temporary, we know you are getting good care and good food and lots of love! We send you licks and wags, wherever your journey takes you!

Dear Kim, I'm wishing you and all at Golden Pines a very Merry Christmas. I always worry when you don't post for a bit. Hope all is very well.
