A Not So Good Day for "Longtime Groomer"

Last Friday it was Todd, Charlie and Max's turn to be groomed. Like so many of us, they were well past due for a good haircut. It was good to see "Longtime Groomer" and I'm glad that she's able to open her shop again.
Unfortunately, it didn't end all that well. "Longtime Groomer" said that Todd seemed nervous when he was unable to see Max or Charlie. And, in a moment when he couldn't see them, Todd tried to jump off the grooming table. When she quickly grabbed him, he bit her.  Oooohhhhh nooooooo.....
Of course, I could not feel any worse about this!  But if there is one good to come out of this, and trust me, it takes a lot to find a good point, it's that the single bite was on her forearm, and not her hand. "Longtime Groomer" was as understanding and as forgiving as she could possibly be, and of course I appreciated that.

When I called a couple of days later to check on how she was healing, we decided that Todd may have been out of sorts because she was wearing a mask the entire time. Not that any dog should ever bite anyone - But I'd noticed that Todd was a bit unnerved and leery around me when I'd had a mask on a few days before and he was a little nervous when we arrived at "Longtime Groomers" that morning. So, that may be what led up to the bite, I just don't know.

We'll have time to figure it out though. The three of them won't be due to go back to be groomed until at least September. Plenty of time to worry about next time, right?

  1. My 16 year old cat doesn't seem to recognize me when I'm wearing a hat. Not sure about the mask.

  2. Always scary when your dog bites someone. It has happen to us before. Awful feeling, isn't it? So sorry it happened with Todd and the groomer. Hope you are able to let go of it. It's hard but time will help.

  3. I'd bite also if a robber in a mask came after me.

  4. What a difference a mask can make, not able to see your whole face or when you talk. Todd , it was just a safety necessity, you'll be fine next time.

  5. I think you've probably hit on the problem. they may be more sensitive to our faces than we've ever realized.
I bought groceries the other day and wondered the same thing about a human baby seeing masks on most everyone. it must be strange to them.

  6. Hello, sounds awful for both the groomer and Todd. I am sure wearing the mask is confusing for the dogs. I am glad the groomer was forgiving and is healing. Take care!
Enjoy your day, have a great new week ahead!

  7. We're sure Todd didn't really mean to bite the groomer. Sometimes it just happens. It seems that bites are probably a hazard groomers deal with regularly so don't be too hard on yourself.

  8. Todd had to be frightened to have bitter the Groomer. This has become a very scary world.

  9. Those things happen. Mom wonders how we might react to masks too. Lightning has been to the vet a number of times recently and they are all wearing masks, or at least they are when they meet us. We hope the groomer heals well and Todd understands that he is still a good boy.

  10. The quick grab to catch him by a "stranger" in a mask. I honestly don't blame the little guy.

  11. Awwww.... poor Todd. I think about this every time I go somewhere (which admittedly isn't too often) and wear a mask. How strange I must look! So it's no wonder Todd was nervous about it. I don't blame him one bit. Perhaps she can take her mask off when she's dealing directly with him in the future. It's a hard predicament. Love, Andrea xoxo

  12. These things do happen, and we're glad it was not worse and the groomer is understanding.
I guess we're all ready for this mask thing to be over, even poor Todd! It sure better be by the time he has to go again.

  13. I bet that the mask and the unexpected "catch" by the groomer combined to put him into a state. Poor Todd... and poor groomer. I'm glad that she was so great about it.

This may not be for you - but we've conditioned Hachi to love a muzzle just for when he's nervous and must be handled When we take the muzzle out, he chases it to push his nose into it which, of course, leads to treats!!!

  14. Sophie does not take well to either of us wearing a mask. Canine facial recognition must work on a full face basis. Todd, is at the end of the day a fellow who has fears and worries. Being on a grooming table with something from Roswell may justify and excuse his misbehaviour this once.

  15. You have the right attitude. It's too soon to worry about next grooming. And the circumstances are not likely to happen again. Thank goodness for a good groomer.
