There's a quote from one of my favorite movies "Fried Green Tomatoes" where Ninny says to Evelyn that "a heart can be broken, but it goes on beating just the same." All of us know how true this is about our hearts and life as well; they both continue after a loss.
Of course the last couple of days have had their moments of difficulty. But what has made it easier and has provided so much comfort are the heart-felt comments from so many of you. I continue to be deeply touched and humbled by your thoughts and your friendship. Cowboy's loss has left us with aching hearts, but your kindness has helped to ease that. I will always be grateful and thankful to all of you for your support.
Our lives do continue and are getting back to normal...The sun and warmth returned yesterday and it was so nice last evening to be outside with the dogs and watch their games and antics. I look forward to being off work on Thursday and catching up on things around the house and with all of you on your blogs too--Just like Cowboy, there are some things that I really do miss. Enjoy your Wednesday!!
Time will make your broken heart less painful.
ReplyDeleteCowboy, will be forever by your side, just as he always was...

Things have been busier than I'd like them to be here lately. I saw that you lost Cowboy, and I am truly sorry for that. Mike and I lost a dog (Pierre- a mini poodle that belonged to my aunt) last April. We inherited him when she passed away in 2006. We didn't have him but three years, but we grew to love him. He would have been 18 in June, so he had a lot of "old man" problems. Blindness and incontrolable bladder and bowels, to name a couple. But we were heart broken when we lost him. He has a lovely grave under the Magnolia. Life does go on. But there's always still plenty of love to go around.

ReplyDeleteThe Power Of The Dog
ReplyDeleteby Rudyard Kipling
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But...you've given your heart for a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart for the dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Cowboy will forever live in your heart. I have to keep telling myself that about Java and I keep reminding myself that he found so much joy in life that he wouldn't want me to be sad. I'm sure Cowboy felt the same way about you.

Hey Ms. Kim,
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind, could you send us your mailing address. Our email is on our blog profile. We won't abuse it, just us and Khyra's mom have something to send to youse guys.
Every now and then mom and dad will have "remember when" night, that is about those dogs that have gone before us. You must have lots of those at your house too. Dad says to mom: Remember when Old Bear Dog was mad at you for yelling during the football game when the 49ers scored and he wouldn't even look at you?" You'll have "Remember when Cowboy yada yada yada" stories to go along with all your other angel dogs. the stories are always of the good times and never of the bad. The sometimes bring tears but they always bring smiles. Spring is close at hand.

Rita
