Sunday-Monday Happy Days?

~Hamlet napping on Rudi~
With the rush of last week, one day that I was really looking forward to was Sunday. Our church was having a conference, which meant I didn't have to prepare a Sunday school lesson. I hadn't planned on attending because Carl was working. So, since Carl was going to be gone, I bought a favorite 'guilty pleasure' for lunch and was going to just enjoy the day at home.  But I woke up in the early morning hours with the stomach-flu...Day (really) ruined...I stayed in bed almost all day.  This morning I was feeling somewhat better, but I didn't think I was well enough to be bent over a patient all day, so I decided to stay home from work.  I very rarely call in sick, but I have to admit that even though I'm still feeling a bit under the weather, I've enjoyed the day.

~Bubba~
Bubba had his own version of the flu last week, or a bad restaurant review, whatever you'd like to call it.  Along with it he had a couple of days when he had 3 grand-mal seizures. Thankfully there were none over the weekend. I happened to see my vet last week and we discussed what all this could mean.  She feels that because Bubba is having seizures (about) every 2-3 months, that perhaps it may be time to put him on medications for them. I disagree and feel that when or if they become more frequent then we'll discuss going that route.  I'm hoping I've made the right choice and it's not just the flu.

Isn't it nice to have help in the kitchen when you're not feeling well?
~Rudi~

  1. Oh, I'm so sorry that you're not feeling well. You just stay in bed and take care of yourself. The flu is nothing to take lightly and you will need to rest, so that you will recover more quickly.

I agree with you, by the way, about Bubba. Vets can sometimes be very quick to want to put animals on medications. The three seizures is worrisome, but you'll want to see if it was something extraordinary, or if it's a new pattern developing, before you decide what to do.

Rudi looks like he's being a big help.

  2. Rudi is my favorite picture of the week. Love how he's helping out while you're under the weather!

  3. Porties are unabashed counter surfers. A couple of mine have more or less outgrown the habit, unless something really special is close to the edge. The others check the counters regularly.

I hope you're feeling better soon. You have good instincts about your dogs. If you think you should wait with Bubba, do it. No one knows those dogs better than you.

  4. Ah, the best laid plans....

Hope you're feeling better soon. If not, looks like Rudi has the situation under control ;0)

  5. Hey Ms. Kim,
Shiloh was resting on top of Max out in their doghouse in the paddock last week. Dad couldn't get a picture because of the screen and if he opened the deck door the moment would have been gone. Radar hasn't had a seizure in well over 8 months so we're hoping that he has outgrown the problem as our vet said that he might; he had such a physically distraught puppy hood. Fortunately no one here has been sick although there certainly is lots of kitchen help. We hope that you feel back up to par ASAP. The pack definitely can't afford to have the Alpha feeling bad. Stay warm and cozy.

  6. Sorry to read you are feeling poorly, I hope it's not the flu, otherwise you'll be laid up a lot longer than one day !
Your Goldies have so many personalities, all of them sweet.
    Get well soon,
    Hugs,

  7. Hi Kim, I'm so sorry you had the flu yesterday but glad you took today off. I pray you will be back to your healthy self by tomorrow and for Bubba-that you might have the wisdom to know what course of treatment to take. Our old Reggie is showing signs of his arthritis hurting him-I hope I know when we need to make that decision we all dread.
Have a wonderful and warm week my friend.
    Hugs, Noreen

  8. Guess I have had small dogs to long, had never heard the expression "counter surfer". LOL!

Feeling better? I sure hope so, although, maybe you need to take on more day off.... just to make sure... ;-)

Are you keeping a journal of when Bubba has each seizure and what's been going on?

    Take care now!

  9. Sorry to hear you are not feeling at the top of your game today and maybe that little kitchen helper can whip up some chicken soup for you...huh Rudi?
I guess Rudi would have the soup finished off long before you got a sip.
I am sure you are making the right choices for Bubba, you know him better than anyone else and I think you will sense when the time comes for meds.
Take care and have a quiet recuperative evening Kim...

  10. Oh man, BOTH of you having sickies? I hope you both feel better soon. Why do dogs have seizures anyway? I keep reading about all kinds of dogs having them...it's not right!

  12. I just love to see photos of your monsters - I mean angels - I mean monsters. :) Rudi!!!

I hope by now you are feeling even better still. I know you probably felt bad calling in sick as I'm sure folks had to be rescheduled. But sounds like you needed the rest and hopefully got over the crud.

I hope your baby doesn't start having seizures more often!

  14. Kim...gosh, I hope I did not pass my stomach bug to you over the internet! Yikes! It took me almost two full days of rest to get over it (except for chores). Hope you are back to normal.

I would not rush into meds too soon either. So many people and animals are over medicated.

  15. I hope you are feeling better Kim. There's nothing worse than the stomach flu. Ick. Rudi is so sweet to help you out in the kitchen.
I love the picture of Hamlet napping on Rudi. Priceless! Feel better.

  16. Hi Kim...we have a lot in common...my "pup" is an 11 year old Yorkie-Poo who is having occasional seizures too but also having trouble walking. It makes me sooo sad! We are making an appt to have a myelogram to find the cause. I don't want to do heroics but the vet thinks we should have it done just in case it's an easy fix. Hard to know the right things to do, I agree with you...making med choices etc.

Another thing we have in common is my cold-flu... I feel like...poop! Hope we feel better sonn and our doggies too! Yours has SUCH a sweet face!!

  17. Poor ole' Bubba, and you of course too. That sounds so serious! I'm sending him all kinds of good thoughts and prayers.
Rudi, Rudi, Rudi...I know a doggie like you - she's my parent's golden named Bella...she's a little naughty, too...but she makes up for it by "talking" to us all the time. She actually makes sounds like she's talking, it is the funniest thing. I'm sure Rudi makes up for it somehow, too :)

  18. So sorry about your flu... That sounds rotten.

And, poor Bubba. Grand mal seizures are scary and serious. We had a dog who had several of them, went on meds for a few years, and then went into spontaneous remission for the rest of his life (like 6 years). I don't know why he got better but I hope that Bubba does too.

  19. Oh Kim I sure hope you are feeling better!! Stomach flues are just the worst!! I love the picture of Rudi lending a helping hand. It reminds me of my Sassy(the beagle) . She has decided it is her job to help clear the dinner table. Once all of the dishes are cleared, she has claimed the job of "wiping" off the table. I have caught her twice now up on the table---YIKES. When I make my shocked "what do you think you are doing" noise she is very sorry but that doesn't seem to stop her from "Helping" again.... I am not sure exactly what to do with her :)
I have taken stock in clorax clean up spray!!!
Well I hope your week finds you feeling better with each new day

It's nice to see you still have your sense of humor...your comment on Rudi's photo cracked me up!

  25. Mazel tov on your 200th post and commiserations on your stomach bug. Hope you're better. Did Rudi remember to feed anyone besides himself?

Sorry to read about Bubba's seizures. Hope they don't become more frequent. You can probably tough it out if it's only one every few months. But as the others said, trust your own instincts. No one knows your dogs like you do.

  28. Hi Kim

The lovely Donna @ Starkey Hollow told me I had to check in and see your gorgeous Bubba. Poor little thing...you feel so helpless when a dog is not well. It is the one time you wish they could speak. I love that last shot...looks like he is feeling a bit better!

Just read about your award. Congratulations... Isn't Victoria wonderful? Her sister Jacqueline is a sweetheart too :)

I think I can tick the list that you have written here.

  33. I had to visit when I saw your blog was about goldens. We just lost our 15 year old golden and I can't begin to tell you how painful it is. Seeing your pictures made my day. I'm sorry you don't feel well but having golden angels around helps.

  34. I'm glad that you and Bubba are both feeling better and hope that you don't have to put him on medication any time soon. I'm with you, that medication should be a last resort and only used when absolutely necessary!

  35. I think you made the right decisions, staying home and keeping Bubba off the meds. Sometimes our well meaning Vets have a tendency to rush things.

  36. Dear Kim,

  37. Oh get well soon xx

A lady who lives down my road always calls into the charity shop on a Tuesday afternoon & that's when I'm in helping. As long as I've known her she's had golden retrievers from a rescue. She told me Beckie had died - a good age but I've known Becki all the years I've lived here. Felt sad. Maybe Becky & Sam met again
