Through the Briars and the Brambles

I've been feeling really restless the last several days.  I've decided that it's either spring-fever, or too much sugar.  But I've had real problems staying focused on any one thing in particular.  So Carl and I took the dogs for a walk yesterday afternoon.  As you can see in the new header picture, it was a beautiful day of blue skies and sunshine.

Since we've not seen anyone new or any changes to the property in back of us, we headed in that direction.  Carl was about half way up the hill when all of the sudden Josh who was not on a leash started his excited barking and howling as he ran into the woods after some deer he'd seen. In the picture below on the left, Toby is looking at Josh the moment he started running.
It didn't take but a moment to lose sight of him. Carl had the dogs on a leash so that left me to get Josh.  I decided that I'd cut him off on the other side.  Of course I am not as fast as either the deer or Josh, but I caught sight of him going into the woods on the other side of the clearing.  He had been totally outrun by the deer, and he had also gone totally deaf never looking back as he started the next leg of his adventure.  I went into the woods to get him and became tangled in the briars.  As I freed myself, I kept calling to Josh and a miracle happened, he regained his hearing and came to me, all sparkly eyed and smiles!!
~Josh after his adventure~
Of course I didn't scold Josh for running off, but praised him for coming back.  On the way home the words to the old country  tune "The Battle of New Orleans" which is a traditional hillbilly tune by Johnny Horton tumbled through my head,

Yeah they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico...

Now, even a day later, I can't get rid of it...
Finally my mind is focusing on something.

I always worry about William running off after deer (he is part deerhound after all), so glad Josh got his hearing back. Talking about hearing, I wasn't sure I knew the song you mentioned so I Youtubed it...yes I remember it now! and now I'm singing it and singing it and singing it!! I like the bit about the British running, we should do more of that.lol.

First, love your new header - it really captures the spirit of your blog. Second, Bart and Ruby BOTH have that problem with periodic deafness. The vet can't figure it out...;-) And third, get that song OUT of my head!! Have a wonderful Sunday!

Ah, the periodic deafness thing. Amazing how all dogs are afflicted with it. We've found the word 'croissant ' instantly cures it. Josh looks like it would work on him too !

I love the photo's and the joy of Spring and the outdoors.

Its amazing which songs come to mind, for me caught in such a situation, the tune 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' comes to my mind - every time.

Although I do also like Gershwins 'Walking the Dog' tune too.

Aah, dogs and their selective hearing! Of course, now I have Johnny Horton visiting in my mind as well.

Your new header looks like springtime! Nice!

I love your new header and thanks so much for planting that song in my head.... :)

....to the Gulf of Mexico!!

My Gracie suffers from selective hearing also. Josh looks so proud of himself for his little romp thru the briars and brambles

Riley and Enzo also have selective hearing sometimes, but like Angus mentioned a word associated with food still seems to be heard.

Josh looks happy, and I love your spring photos, and wish that was the season we were going into here!

When we start chasing someone, we see and hear nothing else. We're happy Josh had such a great adventure.

XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy

SHE's already humming that song and will probably have it for the day.

I had that song stuck in my head last year and couldn't get rid of it. Now I have to avoid thinking about it or it'll get stuck again.

Don't you love how happy they look after an adventure?

joanne fox said...

Oh yes - the times when they turn a deaf ear as they go careering into a lake after ducks! Hurray for Spring.

GOOSE said...

I have it on good authority, my own, that deer make us dogs go deaf. It's true. MOM has experienced this EVERY TIME I see and chase a deer. I don't know what it is but those deer do something to us and we can't hear a thing.
Blessings,
Goose

Reading this post has really made me laugh. You are too funny. That is so great that you did not scold Josh for running off but for coming back. I would have done the same just because I understand that animals instincts are too run after another one.
Your pictures are amazing. Is this your new camera?
Have a great week.
