A Gain for Lucas and a Loss for Sandy

I've been plagued with time consuming and very frustrating (!!!) problems with my blog all week. But I'm hopeful that the blogger-guru-gods have solved them for me--All paws and fingers are crossed, that they have.

Along with trying to solve the issues with my blog's reading list, the week started off in high gear with Sandy and Lucas at the vet for rechecks from appointments a month ago.

Lucas loved going to the vet!  This was only because the free entertainment in the waiting room was a cat that wasn't CC, and he got to bark at it.  Can someone tell me why you would ignore the signs posted throughout the office to have your cat crated while waiting, not sit in the 'cat waiting area' and then get upset when a strange dog starts barking and scaring your cat?  I'm afraid I just don't understand...But Lucas got a good report in that he's gained about 5 pounds and I'm hopeful that when the test results come back in a few days, that infection will be cleared up.
On the flip-side there was Sandy.  At his last appointment he was diagnosed with glaucoma so we rechecked his eye pressure.  Good news for him in that the medications seem to be working, making us hopeful that no other treatment will be needed for his eyes.  Sandy also started thyroid medication when he was diagnosed with being hypothyroid--At his last appointment he weighed in at a portly 120 pounds.  This appointment Sandy weighed in at a trimmer 99.9 pounds!  Of course we're concerned we may have over corrected the problem with his thyroid, but we'll see.  To me, no matter what his size, I think he's always going to remind me of a bear.  Not only does Sandy make noises like one, but when he rubs along our fence, (photos below) I think he looks a bit like one too, don't you think?
Sandy is totally confident finding his way around our house and yard and I find myself forgetting that he can't see.  Today marks his being with us for exactly two months.  When we first met Sandy, he wouldn't take any treats from my hand, no matter how good it may have smelled to him.  Now he takes everything and anything, and I find myself humbled by his trust.
I'm so, so glad that my blog issues are resolved, and I'm looking forward to enjoying my day off catching up with your news and things around the house.  Enjoy your Thursday!!

  6. Thyroid is tricky. MY medications keep having to be adjusted, but Delilah's are fine. :O That is good news on both fronts and I'm glad things seem to be on track for your crew. Enjoy your day!

  7. Glad to hear the check ups went well. I agree with you about the cat owner. If they don't want their cat to get scared then crate them and keep them out of sight of dogs. Hope blogger keeps cooperating with you too.

  12. We have our Zach on a diet after the vet saw him last week. She checked his thyroid and it was normal. I've never had a dog that metabolizes as poorly as he does. He is part Golden.

Gaining the trust of an animal is pretty awesome:-) I'm so happy it's working out.

  13. I'm glad your blog issues have been resolved too. I miss you when you don't post.

Sandy and Lucus are beautiful! I'm so glad they are doing well. That is the cutest "bear" I've ever seen.

I so enjoy hearing how the animals always come around due to your love, patience and kindness.

  15. Glad to hear the meds are helping ! Miggy sounds like a bear as well when she rubs here back and rolls ! Lovely photos ! Hope blogger smartens up for you ! Yes some people in the vets just drive me nuts and the thing is they are the ones that really don't seem to care much for their pets either ! Have a good day !

Blogger can be a pain at times, I agree.

  19. Trust - it's such a gift, isn't it, to have our animals trust us with the safety and well-being of their bodies and hearts? I can't think of anyone who deserves that gift more than you, Kim!

  20. I love the photos of Sandy rubbing his face on the fence... must feel good! :-)

I must admit that I am one of those cat people who brings their cat on a leash to the vet's office. I only do it with one of my four kitties, though, and he is always leashed (which my vet allows). Quite frankly, the crate upsets him so much that he poops all over himself, throws up, and has even hurt himself in it. He's a senior, so I try my best not to stress him out, which the crate does. He loves dogs (was fostered in a home with 3 great danes) and usually just sits beside me on a chair staring out the window while we're waiting. Also, I always bring a fuzzy blanket from home to swaddle him in, just in case he does get nervous, but he never really does. Maybe that's not the right thing to do, but I'm not willing to stress out my Sammie-cat with the wretched crate when he's quite content to sit and wait on a leash.

  21. Hi Elizabeth! THANKS for your thoughts! If the cat had not been so upset, I don't think it would have been a problem--But I just couldn't quiet Lucas and the owner got upset with me, The cat waiting area is really quiet and probably would have been a better choice.

  23. I have been having trouble with my google reader for about a week. grrr

Glad to hear about the good vet reports. I don't understand why people think they might be the only ones in the waiting room at the vet. The last time I was waiting at our vet, there was a small child who was allowed to play on the scale meant for pets and then made high pitched shrieking noises...always a good thing for nervous animals to listen to.

  24. Good news on the health stuff. We do the same thing about rubbing on the wood fence. When THEY see this , here come the ear drops cause the vet says it is ear mites.

  25. So happy to hear that Sandy is doing better. He needed to find good parents to take care of him and he did. Thank God for you and your husband. I don'tblame you for being upset at the vets office. People don't respect rules and signs anywhere. Good for Lucas barking. I always look forward to reading your post.
Hope you have a great rest of the week and weekend.
I am praying that Hurricane Isaac does not hit us. The path is showing coming our way. If you can please PRAY for all of our safety.
    Thank you. Ana

  28. Oh Sandy! I work for a nonprofit dealing with low vision and we see more and more dog owners finding their dogs have glaucoma. I hope that he's able to take the drops.

Hope you have a drama-free weekend with the blog! Everything seems to working ok with it!

  30. I've had five dogs on thyroid meds at one time or another and all of them dropped a lot of weight fast when starting. Be sure to check levels frequently at first because they usually have to adjust dosage.

  31. Kim, I was wondering where you had gotten to! I'm glad everything is going well on your end and that things are looking up for Lucas and Sandy. And yes, there is something distincly bear-like about Sandy, as in cuddly teddy bear!

  32. Sandy is a bear!! He totally looks like one!!

As you know, I've had issues with inconsiderate humans this week too... They can be VERY frustrating... It is a wonder the vet didn't say anything to the cat owner... Hmmm...

  36. Hey Kim! Sandy was on .12 mgs of thyroxine (two .6 tabs) twice daily, But I got a call this afternoon from the vet to half one of the .6's -- I had a feeling with that big of a weight loss, he was taking too much.

Your dogs are so very fortunate that they have such wonderful people to look after them. We see so many poor animals up here that are just taken for granted...

Glad ur pups are responding to the meds. It must be a great relief.

I dont even want to start talking about my blogger probs. Somehow the server here assumes everyone resides in India and converts all addresses to .in so I cant access any of them! How very irritating!
