Old Shoes, Frisbees and Joshua

What is it that makes an old pair of shoes so appealing?  Comfort is the first word that comes to my mind.  There's just something about wearing shoes that fit your feet perfectly and you can wear them for hours.  I have to admit that even when I've gotten that new pair of shoes, I still love the old ones best.  I think that Josh feels the same way about his toys--In particular the frisbee.
We've been playing a lot of frisbee lately. We actually used to play frisbee all the time.  Our girl Rudi that passed away last year was obsessed with it, and she made the game a lot of fun with her over-the-top enthusiasm. But when she was no longer with us, I just felt that the game wasn't as enjoyable without her, so we stopped playing, despite that Josh and Sheba really loved it.  Even when I would walk to the shelf where the frisbees are kept in the garage, Josh would always follow me there and whine in hopes of my throwing one for him to chase--Even Sheba would wait patiently for me to give her one too, but I didn't.  However, a few weeks ago, for some reason, I dusted them off and the game of frisbee began once again.
Despite having at least six frisbees that are the same brand and type, both Sheba and Josh have their favorites.  When they have gotten left outside and we can't find these favorites, the newer (and cleaner) ones aren't the ones they prefer.  Sheba has two that she will play with, Josh on the other hand has only one that he really, really likes.  Sure, he'll chase another one, but there is no doubt that he loves and prefers the dirty, old chewed up, hole filled green one.  It has been his favorite for several years now.  I've tried to get him used to playing with a new one, but for whatever reason, it's just not the same for him.  He's happiest when he has the old green one.  I've decided that his love for the green frisbee is like an old pair of shoes--You love those old shoes, and even though you have new ones, that same comfy and familiar feeling just isn't there and it's not the same.
I hope you've had a good weekend.  Below is a little twelve-second video we made this afternoon of Josh chasing his green frisbee--Sheba is there too, and the other dog with them is CarrieAnne.  They run past Toby and Lucas can be heard barking in the background.
By the way, the new neighbors were around on Saturday--I chatted with them and do find them to be very nice, sincere people--My wardrobe malfunction this time?  The denim shirt I wear like a sweater, was inside out....

  1. Glad you dusted off the old ones. I think they probably bring you as much joy to watch the pups with them as it is for them to play with them. Win win. I like my old toys best too.

  7. Josh must be fairly gentle with that cloth frisbee for it to have lasted that long.

  8. I am like that too with my pajamas. I like the old ones, with holes, haha. So I totally understand where they are coming from. I love seeing dogs carrying something in their mouth. I wish my dog would play fetch or frisbee but he had a bad puppyhood, doesnt really play with toys now.

    Have a great Sunday.

  18. That is so nice that you were back to throwing the frisbees to the dogs. I am sure they are loving it. My Roscoe loves the frisbees as well, but he chews on them and breaks them. Is there one in particular that you would recommend?
Have a great week at work. TFS. ana

  19. Oh they must think that you are such a good dog mama that you put them first, ahead of any thought of yourself. That's too funny, meet the neighbours.

  22. Hey Golden Pines Gang, Jet here. Hi Miss Kim.

Mom feels the same about her sneakers and her favorite jeans! I feel the same about my bed in the family room. I would take that over any new one Mom would provide. Comfort and familiarity, ahhhhh....

Great video, all that golden glory!

Glad you have healed enough to restart frisbee anew. :)

Oh, and as to the malfunction this time with the neighbors... you and Mom would SO get along!!!

  24. Hi Kim
Thank you for the sweetest little movie of the goldens running around with their frisbees. They are just precious and so beautiful. So loving.
I am the same way about all my clothes. Right now I have on holy jeans- my favorite, and my favorite shirts are old torn ones with paint on them.
I loved your comparison. It is so true- about how all of us have our favorite things!
Oh I just love to hear about the goldens playing with their frisbee.
    It makes me smile!

  26. Hi Kim, I loved reading that you have brought out the frisbees for the pups; there is new life after a season of grief(I'm hoping Fern can see new life too). I also cracked up when I read about your denim shirt being inside out.
Have a great Monday dear friend.
    Hugs, Noreen

  27. The old toys are definitely the best! Rosie Mae has an old piece of plastic, called Huffalump, that she's had for about 10 years, it was originally a strange elephant thing with rough rope wound round it. The head has long gone, as has the rope and feet. A grey plastic tube is all that remains but she loves it. I know when Spring has finally arrived because on that day Rosie rushes into the garden, finds Huffalump (usually hidden deep in the bushes over the winter months) and tosses it round, demanding a play :)

    Love your wardrobe malfunction ;D

  30. Your new neighbours are going to expect more wardrobe malfunctions just you wait and see....maybe put on your shirt backwards...see if they notice.
Sophie loves her Mr. Orangie and has almost dissected him in 1/2...very soon there will be 2 halves to make a whole. Then she'll have to go get another I guess. She has a Mr. Squeakie too, that gets 'murderlized" every morning...seriously Poor Mr. Squeskie!

  34. Your "wardrobe malfunction" made me guffaw! Maybe someday you'll be good friends with those new neighbors and you can all laugh about it together. I bet that they haven't even noticed these things!!!

I love seeing your dogs having such fun. Our dogs never have "old toys" because they destroy everything pretty quickly. I'm happy to hear that your wonderful goldens are gentler than my labs!

  35. Happy dogs!

Guess you need to start looking in the mirror before you go see the neighbors!

  39. It is great to see your dogs playing and having fun. The old pre-loved and slobbered toys are the best!

Your post has made me find our old frisbee (which was put away when Riley had back problems diagnosed) for Enzo to try. Enzo hasn't ever chased a frisbee - but loves fetching things.

  40. We have quite a variety of frisbees . I like the hollow round rings because they fly an really long distance and it gives him a really good workout. His dad likes the fabric ones with the glow in the dark. They are nice and soft on his mouth. Ryker likes all of them, he just loves to play frisbee more than anything else, even eatting! Nothing more joyfilled than a happy dog with a smile on his face and a frisbee in his mouth.

  41. So true about the Goldens preferring their old toys. Love the video. Josh is Easton's twin from another mother.
