Power Restored as Misty Arrives

High winds, rain, sleet, and a little snow hammered our corner of Virginia last Friday. And, just as I was getting ready for work, our lights went out here at home. I managed to get ready, and once at the office, our power went out there as well, so it became a short day which I was grateful for.

I'd prepared for a possible power outage, and we were fine for the most part.  I'm very grateful that on Saturday, friends who were out of town gave us the use of their home to warm up, recharge our cell phones, my laptop and refill our water supply. Other friends had us over for a dinner which along with their company recharged our inner batteries.

Even though I learned that you cannot underestimate the value of a warm dog when you're cold, I'll admit that by Sunday morning I was getting irritable. I was really dreading the thought of another day and night of being without power, and being cold. However, utility trucks were spotted throughout our area, so I just hoped we'd be one of the lucky ones that would get our power restored. Thankfully we were, and by late Sunday afternoon as our house was warming up, I was on a little road-trip.

Misty arrived at Golden Pines. Misty is 12-years old, and was given up by her family who were moving overseas and could not (would not??) take her with them.  She is a lovely dog with great manners, an easy going personality and has the approval of everyone at our house. We were told Misty didn't like small dogs, but we've been pleasantly surprised to find that she doesn't mind Todd at all and vice versa.
Lab Rescue already has Misty listed for adoption, and I've a feeling that she probably won't be with us for very long.  But however long she is with us, we're enjoying getting to know this sweet little gem that needs no polish.

  1. We had a power outage on Saturday for 7 hours, when I told my sister in Lovettsville, she told me about the woes in your corner of the world!

  3. Once again I'm left bewildered at the thought of people abandoning a family pet as sweet as Misty. Hopefully she'll soon be settled comfortably in her forever home. Until then I'm sure she will enjoy her "holiday", and the great company, at Golden Pines.
Sorry to hear about your loss of power, it's so much worse at this time of year.

  4. I wouldn’t tell Todd he’s a “small” dog. He hasn’t a clue and is happy that way ;-). Gail

  6. It was a good week for Home Depot on the east coast as they sold many generators. Two Nor-Easters in less than a week (and another may be on the way) was good for someone. We did not lose power but family members did. Winter has gone on too long.

  7. In January 2007 we had an ice storm that left us without power for twelve days. I had a broken wrist in a cast and eight seven week old puppies in a pen in the kitchen. I was so cold and tired that I'm sure one more day would have driven me over the edge. You have my sympathy. Misty looks like a lovely girl.

  12. Misty, she will have some very happy days with you, however short or long her stay is.Power, one of life's necessities right now, and in winter, or when days are cold, it s is so much harder to manage. Glad friends have come to your rescue.

  13. Glad to hear your power is back on.
Did Misty come from a Military family? If so, depending on where they were going there is a good chance they could not take her, or could not afford to put her up. I remember when we were going overseas to Okinawa, it would have been a mandatory 6 month quarantine minimum. We were sad, but did not take our cat with us.
It might be the same even if you are civilian.
Glad they gave her up and did not dump her somewhere.

  16. Not a good time of the year to be without power, but then again, is it ever a good time? We are glad the power was restored. So many people in New England are still in the dark:( Misty looks like a sweet girl. Enjoy her while she is with you.

  17. Having no power for an extended period is no fun. We've had a couple of events like that here and always in March. Glad to hear all is back to normal for you.

Misty will probably get a new home soon. If I knew I could handle it, I would want her. She looks like a real love.

  20. I'm glad that you made it through without power. It's fun at first... and then it gets old. Misty looks like such a sweetie! Her eyes and face won me over in an instant... (but I must repeat the mantra that we cannot have three dogs!). Thank you so much for being a sanctuary for these dogs whose people are just plain heartless. How could they leave her? Well, now she's with you, and that's good!

  21. Hello, our power was out for 5 days too, I am glad we got a generator years ago. Too many outages, it is still a pain to fool with! Welcome Misty, sorry her owners could not take her with them. All your dogs are adorable, cute photos. Have a happy day and weekend.

  23. Welcome to darling Misty! She looks very much like our Millie who is a 12 year old lab/greyhound mix. She may not have Misty's excellent manners but has mellowed with age. I'm wishing all the very best for Misty.
