No Internet and No Land Line

~Reggie~
Living in the country, at least for me, has had very few drawbacks. One drawback however, has been struggling to keep a good internet connection.  While we are on 'high-speed' it's pretty slow and only a little faster than dial-up.  There are many times where staying connected seems nearly impossible.  I've learned to live with it.  For some who live on our road, dial-up is their only choice.

On Friday, we lost use of our land-line and use of the internet.  Our phone connection was partially restored on Saturday morning, and so was the internet.  But it quickly went out again.  Carl called Verizon and they have promised to come by Thursday....Carl, knowing my sanity was at risk, called again and they said they would try to fix it sooner.

Feeling a little isolated from the world, (and needing an internet fix)  I've come to my office this morning to catch up on e-mails.  But until Verizon makes good on that promise to fix everything, I won't be able to visit your blogs.  I'll miss reading what you are up too--But I hope you've had a good weekend!  Despite the dark cloud hanging over me because of no internet connection, our weather in Virginia has been gorgeous!  I've gotten things done outside, and taken the dogs for several long walks.

Finally, as we all know, today is a day of remembrance as we remember the events and those that lost their lives on September 11th.  I know we are also keeping in our hearts the loved ones they left behind as well.

There are many, many stories from that day.  One that touches my heart is written by a friend of mine who was living in New York City with her husband and two Goldens, Hope and Darwin.  I posted this last year, but I find Nan's story very compelling, because it is one of survival and determination.  I hope you'll take a minute to read about 'Two Who Survived.'

  5. I hear so many people calling out the frustrations of "SPEED" or lack of...I suspect this will change in the years to come...no small comfort now I know. One good thing from all this...garden, dogs and speaking to real people...go for it!

  9. oh my dear god. i am typing this through tears. i read the story of your friend and their two amazing goldens, hope and darwin.
after surviving what they did, to each die of cancer. i just don't know.
my zekey (a pon like wilf) died of cancer last september 24. my sister-in-law, as i speak, is dying of it as well. WHY can't we find the cure for this disease? are we trying? or are the expensive real estate and all the
professions tied to it of more importance? that's cynical i know. but my husband died of throat cancer and that's what he said toward the end... "honey, it's an industry now, just like anything else." how sad if that is true!
love to you kim and to your strong and beautiful life,

  10. It is awful when your connection is down. You don't realize how much you depend on it until you don't have it. :-)

  12. I would be miserable without my internet as well! I'm lucky I live in town though, a wi-fi equipped coffee shop is never far away!

I'm so glad you re-posted Hope and Darwin's story, I was actually thinking about it a lot today! Have we really been following each others' blogs for a year already?

  14. I am really having a /hate/hate relationship with Verizon. It's worse since the upgrade. I'll be humming along - if I was fortunate to hum and all of a sudden the bars drop to none and I get to start all over again. It's the last game in town and I am thinking of just dropping all service.

09/11/01 - Everyone has a story about that day, some worse than others, I cry for them all.

  15. I was having major problems when Verizon was switching things out to take over our Alltel account, which occurs 9/25. I guess they were working on the cell towers -- it was awful. Now it's much better since I suppose they have finished with their work. Hope yours comes back soon. :)

  16. You're really scaring me about the "high speed" being like dial-up, Kim. I was rather looking forward to getting something other than satellite! One the way to read about the "two who survived"...:)JP

  19. Hi Kim! Sorry about your internet.. Hope it's fixed soon.
Thanks for sharing your friend's special story. Tears ran down my face the whole time I was reading. What a horrible ordeal. I'm so glad they were able to rescue their babies. Hope you have a great week in spite of no Internet...

  20. Hi Kim
The story you shared touched our hearts, and I know it will again and again. So very sad.
I am also upset that your internet is being such a "turd".
I know the feeling - sort of,, because our "internet" is not much better than the dial ip was.
But you have also lost your lanline.
You must feel alone today,, the rememberence day 9/11...
    We are thinking of you
The butterfly touched us,,, thank you!
    love

  21. I can relate to the slow high-speed! So many folks are just stunned when we tell them we have no cell phone service here. Life in the hills has its ups and downs at times! =)

  22. Verizon just better keep their promise, because I'll miss my Golden Pines fix.

  23. Very frustrating being disconnected from the world. Isn't it amazing what we get used to having and when we don't have it ~ we feel lost!!

Happy Monday Kim and furry friends!

  24. Ugh! I hate it when I lose service. My in-laws live in Virginia and have incredibly slow internet connections. Certainly not a place I would ever want to live, no matter the beauty!
