~The back seat drivers~ |
We arrived home from Tennessee on Sunday evening. A good trip that was met with happy 'left-behinders' when we walked in the door! As we brought everything inside, I'd taken everything out of the cooler and left it sitting on the floor.
In the corner of my eye I saw Bubba eating the ice (which he loves). I didn't think anything of it, and just let him help himself. After I fed the dogs their dinner, I noticed Bubba's teeth were chattering and he was shivering. He was laying under a window fan, so I turned it off and covered him up. Bubba's gums were pale and his feet were also cold and we had a hard time getting him to stand. We put an insulated dog coat on him and got him off the floor and onto a dog bed. I added more warmed towels and blankets under and on top of him. Eventually Bubba stopped shivering, and he felt much warmer. He seemed so tired and fell asleep, however, his gum color didn't improve. I checked on him through the night, making sure I could wake him, and each time I did that, he seemed a bit more alert and responsive. (Probably wondering why I was waking him up!) But I've no idea why this happened. I wonder if it could have been the combination of eating the ice, not having eaten, then being given a full meal and all of his medications all at once. Could it have been a hypoglycemic reaction? Have any of you had this happen with one of your dogs before? Yesterday and this morning Bubba seems fine...Me, of course I'm still worried because, well, that's just what I do.

Other than that, while just a little bit behind because of being out of town, our week is off to a good start! I hope all of you are doing well. I'm sorry I've not been able to visit many of your blogs, but I'm working on it, and looking forward to reading what you're up too! Enjoy your Tuesday!

Bubba... stop scaring your mama!! It's always worrisome when they lose the color in their gums. Hope he's doing better today!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this shivering and losing colour in the gums my guess would be maybe he reacted to anxiety to all that was going on each dog has a different reaction as you know and maybe that was his. Glad to hear he is ok now and you enjoued your trip , bet your glad to be home though. Have a wonderful day !
ReplyDeleteglad he's okay! yikes!
ReplyDeleteand love that barn shot!
Poor guy. Sounds a little like shock. I hope he's better today and stays warm.
ReplyDeleteBubba thought you were having giant Slurpys to celebrate getting home. He realized that it did not have much flavoring, but he did not want to complain.

Hi Kim, I love it when you post photos of Tenn., it brings back so many fond memories. I don't have a clue about Bubba, just glad he is back to normal now. Have a wonderful day my friend.

WELCOME HOME!
ReplyDeleteGlad Bubba's feeling better. He just wanted to make sure that you don't completely forget about the stress of caring for a bunch of dogs! Either that, or he's punishing you for leaving him behind...
;-)
Woof! Woof! good to hear you are back. For sure the rest of the Golden Pines Gang missed you. I see TODD enjoying the ride home even though he is in his crate. Oh ICE! It must be a Golden Thing! Hope you had a chance to read the book. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me to write this post last Friday. http://www.sugarthegoldenretriever.com/2011/11/seeing-beauty-in-this-golden-moment.html
Golden LOVE n Woofs
Might just be his age and condition..glad they got to go with you. Beautiful photo too. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Bubba is better and I have no idea what went wrong. With my insulin dependent diabetes, I more often than I like get hypoglycemia, but I have never checked my gums. I do shake, but I don't think I'm cold. I bet all the ice, the excitement, no food, and the meds could have done it. Maybe a call to the vet to make you feel better?
ReplyDeleteKim pale gums are a sign of Anemia, yes?? Welcome back home!! I don't have a clue how you did it, I guess i should go back a few posts and see!!

Glad you all had a good holiday. Hope Bubba decides that eating ice isn’t such a great thing to do. You don't need anything more to go wrong ;o(
ReplyDeleteWe love your back seat drivers! Poor Bubba... Glad he's better today.

Bubba looks great in the photo. Hope he continues to do well.
ReplyDeleteWhew! You have me scared. I am so glad he's ok! He looks like such a cuddly boy.
ReplyDeleteWelcome home! :)
What a great shot of Bubba, so glad he's better today!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that happening, not just from eating ice. I think you are right about it being a reaction. Definitely worth asking your vet the next time your in!
ReplyDeleteSam
I read somewhere that you shouldn't give dogs ice water, if they are hot - maybe ice is bad any time? Poor Bubba, glad he's ok now.
ReplyDeleteDid you enjoy your stay? Like the old barn pic! How did Todd like the change of scenery?
Back to work - sad, isn't it?
I hope Bubba is better now. That is rather strange. He must have chilled himself pretty good.
ReplyDeleteGlad Bubba has recovered .When they decide to scare they really scare !
ReplyDeleteWe haven't a clue why that could happen....hope all is well now.

I am glad Bubba is OK. I don't know why Bubba reacted like he did, but Riley, in his first couple of years, had a stomach that couldn't handle a sudden change in temperature. If he had too much ice (sometimes only three or four very small ice cubes) his stomach's reaction to the sudden cold would make him bring up the entire contents of his stomach (whereas other dogs can eat ice no problem - I used to freeze food and water in one litre sized lumps for my first Goldie to keep him happy in summer when I was at work). Over time Riley has been able to eat more cubes of ice (he thinks of ice as a treat) but I only give ice to him in small doses when he isn't too hot as otherwise I know I will be cleaning my floors!
ReplyDeleteI would have been out of my mind worrying about Bubba! Glad he is on the mend.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the pictures, it is a very beautiful area.
I also meant to say that I love the photo of the barn - such wonderful autumn colours.
ReplyDeleteOh My Goodness, I was holding my breath while reading this...I'm a worrier too...
ReplyDeleteLove the shot of the backseat...
Oh Toooodd!!! :)

Ahhh, poor Bubba! so glad he's back to feeling better.
ReplyDeleteGlad Bubba is feeling better and that y'all made it home safely!!
ReplyDeleteAROOOOF!

Glad Bubba seems better. My MOM LOVES the barn photo.

Sounds like you had a good little vacation, Kim. I love those old barns! I've heard people buy them up for the wood.....'barn pickers'?!
ReplyDeleteHang in there Bubba.
Yes, that's what we do, we worry. Hope today is a better day for him. Is Todd glad to be back home? Love old barn photos. I take shots of them too. It's a part of America that hopefully will survive a little longer.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, so glad you had a good trip (well, delayed trip I guess) but at least you got away. Love the photo of the barn, I like barns too they look so tempting to paint,on paper that is, not literally! As for Bubba, I have to say I'm stumped but so glad he is okay now.
ReplyDeleteYou might try Google and see if you can find an answer there. I Google everything. Glad he is ok now.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a nice weekend and that Bubba is feeling better! That is a very strange thing that happened to him, I've never heard of anything like that before.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I love all your barn photos!
Wow, that's scary. Tsar has a problem with cold food. If he eats ice cream, he immediately throws up. It's as if his stomach spasms from the cold.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear your trip was good and that you are all home safe and sound.
Bubba certainly did give you a scare, but glad he is ok now!
How very strange.
Welcome home,,, and such gorgeous photos! We love barn photos so much and the country side that you share

That was the patented "Chub Brothers brain freeze". It was Bubba's turn!! Glad he is all right. He ain't as young as he use to be.
ReplyDeleteEaston says he loves ice cubes too and runs to the fridge every time he hears the ice cube tray rattle.
KIm...truly I know nothing about dogs, but it does make sense that the body has to bring that ice up to body temperature...must require an awful lot of energy to do that.
ReplyDeleteNever a lover of ice (or anything cold for that matter)...He probably needed a nice cup of warm tea - LOL!
Glad he's better!
Wow, that sounded scary for Bubba - hopefully it was just a reaction. Love the back seat picture.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping that Bubba will continue to feel better.

What a beautiful barn photo! Glad all is well with Bubba.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful barn picture!!
ReplyDeletePoor Bubba. I'm glad he's okay now. You take such good care of your kids! I love the backseat drivers.. lol. You are such a brave woman to take everyone with you on vacation. I have one dog and she's never seen a vacation with us... Of course, she's probably not nearly as well behaved as every one of your crew. Seriously! Glad you're back safe and sound!
I'm glad that you had a good trip and made it home safe. But, Bubba sure did scare you. I've had something like that happen to *me*, and I never understood why. But, I did seem to be coming down with something so I've always thought that it was just a flu effect.
ReplyDeleteI hope that Bubba keeps doing well...
Google reader is showing a new post from you (about Todd with a Far Side cartoon) and then it says the post then doesn't exist - is everything OK? We're thinking of you all.
ReplyDeleteLove and woofs,

I love the backseat drivers pic! Sounds like a great trip.
ReplyDeleteBubba's persistent pale gums are kind of worrying, but I can't say I've had anything like your experience. Glad he seems fine again!
