The New Vet and Charlie

My day off today has been a very quiet one spent at home.  When Charlie was seen by the vet late last fall, it was recommended that he have his teeth cleaned.  I was also told during that appointment that he would probably have to have some teeth extracted as well. At the time, the holidays were on the horizon, so I decided to wait.  Well, of course Charlie's teeth weren't getting any better, and so today was the day I'd planned to have them taken care of.  My vet that I've been going to for about 10 years is leaving the area, and I've been slowly getting to know a new one, closer to home.  Actually, this vet comes right to our house, so it works out pretty well.  "New Vet" is a man, which is a change -- For whatever reason, all my vets have been women, so this may take a little getting used to.
But I think there's no better way to break in a new vet than to have them do surgery on one of your treasured family members.  I'm always nervous anytime one of the dogs has to be put under anesthesia.  It was a little more nerve wracking because I was inside looking out and waiting.  From start to finish the procedure took a little more than 3 hours. Unfortunately, more of Charlie's teeth needed to be removed than we'd first thought.  But at the end of the day, he's still a bit groggy, but doing pretty well.  He ate a little dinner, and I think he'll be fine.  For that, I'm grateful.

  1. Poor Charlie! Long ago, I had a Schnauzer by the name of Rough, he had an abscess and the vet was going to take care of it - NINE teeth later and nearly losing him - I have always been leery when they want to knock the poor things out. Was happy to hear that Charlie made it though okay! Hugs to your boy!

  7. Did they do his dental in the mobile unit?!
That would kinda freak me out.
Several of my senior rescued dogs have had a lot of teeth removed
and I was so worried but I can tell they feel better and are able to eat easier.
I'm so glad Charlie is doing ok!

    1. Yes, it's truly an all in one mobile vet-hospital. They can run blood work, do x-rays, everything, including surgery. I was nervous too, because something about it doesn't seem right. The vet does charge $70 to come, but he'll take off $10 for each additional dog he sees, and his fees are less than I was paying. Added to that I'm also saving the 2 hour round trip to get to my other vet -- So it's worth it. He's a good vet, with a good reputation, so I am hopeful "new vet" will work out.

  15. oh, i'd just about pay double for a home-visit vet! my small animal vet used to do double-duty (large and small) and stopped years ago. *sigh*

  20. Poor Charlie and poor Kim! So sorry more teeth had to be extracted than you thought initially. It's never less, is it?
I'm hoping new vet works out for everyone. I know it is hard to lose an established vet that you have trusted.
Sweet picture of Charlie. Hope both of you are doing ok.

  21. Poor Charlie....teeth can be a problem for human and animal alike. He looks quite content even though still a little under the weather.
