On the Mend

I'd really hoped for the chance to sit and relax and enjoy my Sunday afternoon.  Unfortunately, that didn't happen.  I was sitting at my computer when I heard the Todd barking outside.  It was a high pitched non-stop bark that I don't know that I've heard from him before.  Figuring it was probably nothing, I sent Carl out to see what the commotion was.  A couple of  minutes later, he came inside with Sheba, covered in blood.  Carrie was behind her with blood on her as well. The two had gotten into a fight.  Sheba had a large wound on her front leg that was laying open.  She let me wash the debris off, and I then went to check on the other dogs.  Todd was continuing to bark, and I was concerned that he'd been part of the fight too.  Thankfully he was not.  Carrie's wounds were superficial and didn't require much more than being washed off.  So I put Sheba into the van and took her to the animal emergency.  Almost 3 hours later, we left with Sheba having staples on her face, and leg.  She has other wounds that will only need to be kept clean.

This morning they were still tentative around one another.  I left Carrie in her crate all day and this evening they are fine. You may recall that this is not the first time that Sheba has started a fight.  A friend of mine suggested that I think about re-homing Sheba.  Needless to say, I don't know what to do. There's a lot about this that continues to tumble around in my head.  But thankfully I don't have to do anything for now, except let the mending begin for all of us.

  1. It is so sad to hear of these two fighting. I'm so sorry about Sheba's injuries as well as Carrie's. I hope you can figure out something you can do that will be comfortable with.

  2. Goodness Kim, I'm glad that Sheba and Carrie are alright, whatever you decide to do with Sheba, I know you will put great thought into it and it will be the right decision.

You know I love reading your blog and so I am nominating you for the Kreativ Blogger award. You can get all the info here....http://jodistone.wordpress.com/

  3. Oh my goodness Kim, what a sunday you had. Poor babies, I hope that they heal quickly and can learn to be "friends".
I have found my GSD and the foster lab Molly nearing a possible situation like you experienced, fortunately I've been able to head it off and we have had no
injuries. They can get into that Red Zone so quickly.
You're an amazing person and I so admire all your efforts!!
Take care of yourself and all those pups. :)

  4. Oh that's just sad, darn it. Tell Sheba she's upsetting everyone and needs to stop it. Poor Todd must've been very panicked about the fight. Thankfully he wasn't involved. It's not easy to know how to deal with it, so just take your time.

  5. Uh Oh, That owie looks like me when I ran into the fence this year.

My Vickie put a cold pack *frozen salmon" on my eye. It was almost worth it.

Here is hopin that is the last tussle between the two, but what ever happens, we know you will make the right decision.

  8. That is such a difficult situation. We have tension between Fudge and Noah. Fudge is a bully and likes to push other dogs around, but he's not a fighter. All the other dogs except Noah ignore him. Noah takes it personally and tries to fight back. Fudge sometimes winds up with a scratch or cut. Fudge continues to act the bully and I'm working on Noah to get him to cool off a little. Putting Fudge thru obedience class helped a lot. Now when he's acting like an idiot, I can refocus him.

  9. i hate this part that occurs sometimes. thelma and louise - even though they are sisters - used to fight and draw blood. thelma usually started the fight, and usually ended up with the wounds, vet visits and stitches. i am sorry for the added stress on you again...

  10. Oh No. That looks painful. I hope healing happens soon, on all levels.
Goos boy Todd for letting them know.

  11. I'm sorry the girls had a row, good thing Todd didn't get in on it.

Is it the weather changing or ???

  12. Was it food related? That's what most of our spats are about. That and a bit of jealousy. But our fights have never hurt anyone. Hope the girls heal and sort themselves out. It would be sad if Sheba had to move.

I dislike it when dogs fight, it hurts my heart!

I'm certain you'll know what best road to take.

  15. Ooh dear, is she territorial ?
The wounds look bad, so I assume she meant to be taken serious, not just a growl or two.
Hope they girls work it out, it's quite a dilemma !

  16. Oh my, this is always upsetting, isn't it? Hope the girls work it out! Haven't been by lately, but want to say how sorry I am about Jake but so glad he got to spend time with you!
Hope Todd is on the mend after being, um, altered :) And great news about Jasmine finding her furever family.
Hope your holidays will be nice and relaxing!

  17. Oh dear!...sounds like you will need to crate one of them when you're not about. It's always sad when animals don't get on from time to time, so unpredictable! Hope they are heeling well, both physically and mentally.

  22. Oh,that picture of Sheba makes me feel so sad.I hope those nasty wounds heal soon, and whatever decision you make will be the best for all concerned,I'm sure of that.

  23. Sorry to hear about the 2 fighting. Hope the wounds heal quickly and you could figure out what to do with the 2, without it causing you more heartache. This is a main reason why I do not have another golden, Roscoe is very territorial and I am scared he will become very stressed and hurt another dog.

  25. No telling what started it.
If you have to re-home one, you should probably keep the one you've had longest.
    I'd say keep Sheba.
    *hugs*

    Hopefully it won't happen again.

  26. i wonder since baby todd is getting older ... they might be jealous of who kind of mothers him? ... wasn't it reggie who played that part before? dog world is always fascinating. as people-like as they are, the mysteries of their own kind are our glimpse of nature itself. and for you... extra stress that you just don't need!
love and hugs to you dear girl,

  27. Sorry to hear about the fight. I guess Sheba started and lost the fight. If you can't keep them apart, maybe you will have to think of re-homing one of the dogs. Tough call.

  28. Hope that they recover & have no thoughts of doing that again. It`s good Todd was a watchdog. My Bandit is a little dog agressive,Maggie doesn`t take it from him.Hunter was nipped a few times, but in time they became best buddies.I discovered Bandit hates my scolding voice.phyllis

  29. My thoughts are with you. I hope that Sheba heals quickly and that things remain peaceful in your pack. So sorry that you're having to figure out what to do about this...

  30. Oh my, I'm glad everyone is ok. So scary when these fights occur. Hope you got some rest!

  31. My mom spent many years with a dog that started fights, our girl Rhea. The only reason we didn't rehome her was that she was our dog that we had had from the time she was a puppy. She did, howver, affect who we took in as foster dogs. We knew she was usually fine with other males, but she generally could not abide other females. If you think back on fights Sheba has started, you might be able to find things in common between them and try and avoid having Sheba in situations where she might get into a fight and see how that works out.

  32. Oh bless your hear!!! It's hard to know what to do 'cause you don't want the worse case scenario to happen.

I pray that the girls will just learn to get along.

God bless and have a beautifully restful day sweetie!!! :o)

  33. That's a real shame. I wonder if it's time to call Ceasar Milan? I really wouldn't know what to do in this case. So sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Kim, good to hear that they are relatively OK, for now. I wonder if they are both 'alpha' types? When Sophie, being an alpha female, meets another Alpha female either at the park or at day-care, she WILL NOT back down. Two retrievers at day care wouldn't either.....it wasn't pretty!

What to do?! Separation is the only way. How do you train an alpha dog not to be an alpha dog?

Caesar Milan would know!! Give him a call.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry to hear this. It's how all packs work things out when there is tension for whatever reason. Are they both seeming to be Alpha dogs? Time will give you the answers you need but gosh... those wounds look mighty uncomfortable.

  36. Kim,
Oh my this wasn't a very nice way to start your Sunday afternoon off.
I guess it was just a little fight that might have gotten out of hand.
(hopefully no alcohol was involved hee hee)
Glad that Todd was not involved but I do hope everyone can get along.
I soooo much wanted to award you with a award I received but you have over 200 blogger friends which was of the rules:(
Take care and I hope the dogs behave because Santa will know who has been naughty and nice.

  37. OMG! That is a hard thing to deal with Kim...whether to have Sheba move on, let alone allow time for the healing. I have to say though that once may not be enough...at least with what I've dealt with over the years of dogs....:)JP

  39. Another day in the life at GP. With the frequent additions and subractions of pack members, it's no surprise that this kind of thing could happen. Pack dynamics are ever changing and (at least to me) complex. I know you will let your experience and generous heart guide you as to what to do for the good of the pack. Kudos to Todd for being the pack alarm dog. Every pack needs one.

  42. We are so sorry to hear about the fight and to see how badly Sheba was injured. It's rough, because once two adult females take against each other and start fighting, the fighting tends to escalate. Many years ago, mama's family had a mother-daughter pair of Danes whose fighting escalated until they went after each other though a sliding glass door, which shattered at the impact and sliced the tendons in the daughter's left rear leg, leaving her permanently lame. We kept both dogs, but they could only be in the same room if mama's dad was there with eyes on them both. If he left the room, one of them had to go with him. They could never be trusted to be loose with each other, in the house or the yard. When mama graduated from college and had her own house, she took the daughter to live with her. Hope you can work out something that keeps everyone safe, your home serene, and both girls in good home[s]. And good job, Todd!

  43. Samson, who is the sweetest dog, does not tolerate Soldier's excitement, particularly when my husband is around. Soldier's special kind of whiny excitement will drive me nuts too, so in a way I understand Samson when he feels a need to attack. Soldier submits immediately now and Samson lets go once Soldier is on his back. Other than that, they are the best of friends. Since Soldier's back got injured in such a fight, we are keeping them apart with Angel and us sharing time with each of them. Soldier and Samson do go on walks together and Samson kisses Soldier and loves him. Go figure. With all the dogs you have, looking for another home for Sheba may be the best way to go. Bad about a ruined Sunday but good you were home.

  44. I am so sorry to learn about this Kim. You must have been horrified! I certainly wouldn't presume to tell you what to do. I only know what I would do and that would be to rehome the aggressor. But that's just because I'm such a softie for the underdog. My heart just goes out to them and I want to get rid of anyone or anything that threatens them. "Alice" the matriarch of my flock of Shetland sheep, turned out to be rather passive ~ even though she is the largest of all the sheep. In spite of her lack of aggression, Alice is the boss of the flock. That's because I always SELL anybody that picks fights with her!

    ;-)

My heart does go out to you over this situation. Aw Heck! My heart goes out to you ALL of the time! I'll be praying for you and for both of the girls...

  46. Sheba needs some isolation I'm afraid and re-introducing her when healing has begun. It's never easy when these things happen. Be careful when the dogs are together next time and be on top of any weird signals that you may witness.
