Just Me the Dogs and Cake

Carl left this morning on his trip to Kentucky and Wisconsin to see family, and our company that was here for 4 days has also gone.  I've always enjoyed people coming to visit and staying at our home--But the only requirement is an obvious one, is that they MUST be dog-lovers!   Aside from that one rule that is truly etched in stone, I try to look at the positive that my house is just a little bit cleaner than usual.  And before company arrives it's a good feeling because I've even gotten to a few things I've been meaning to do.  With a house guest it also gets me out of my routine and I get to do a few things I wouldn't normally make time for.
I also have to admit that I don't even mind the extra cooking that goes along with it.  For this visit with our friend, I made 'my special' chocolate cake.  However Carl was supposed to take the leftover cake to Kentucky  for he and my brothers to enjoy and he forgot it.  So, as the dogs who are worn out from all the activity are enjoying the peace and quiet, all I'm hearing is the cake calling to me from the kitchen.  What is a girl to do?

  1. A Girl is supposed to package it up and put it in the freezer. A woman, however, left alone to her own devices must get out the cold milk and eat till she's stuffed! Enjoy!

  2. I think it is best if you just sacrifice yourself and eat THE WHOLE THING before it makes it's self too comfortable....

    (I've missed you!)

  3. Love your picture!

I think I heard that cake call my name too! I'll be there in about two hours. Start the coffee.

Kidding, of course, but if I lived closer I'd be on your doorstep...

  6. THANKS for the suggestions so far, I have to admit that for some reason, I never thought of freezing it...How do you thaw a chocolate cake though?

  7. I think you deserve a piece of cake after all of the entertaining, cooking, and cleaning you've done! Go for it!
Also, I'd like to thank you for displaying the blogs you follow on your sidebar b/c if you didn't I wouldn't have discovered "Dear Helen Hartman"! What a hoot to look at vintage photos, to see where she shops for vintage items, etc!

  10. A doggie blog, that's very painful yet irresistible to me.
I've just lost my beautiful big black labrador so coming here and admiring all the doggie members of your family is a bit of therapy for me.

As for the chocolate cake: is there still some left?

  21. Kim, I don't understand...just what is leftover cake???
    Just kidding...well, kind of!
I would just set frozen cake out on the counter to thaw, making sure it is covered but not touching the icing..anyone else? Not that I've ever actually had leftover cake...just sayin'...(ok, I actually have, but it's RARE!)

  26. Kim it looks like there is about 4 pounds of frosting on a 2 pound cake which is correct proportioning for me. Just very yummy. So cut some pieces for you, then take the rest to work, where people will groan and moan about how they are gonna eat all that, and then they do it quickly.

    Cheers & hugs,
Jo, who also recommends starting with the frosting and then working down to the cake.

  35. Since you can't feed chocolate to the dogs, you know you must save them from it by eating it yourself. A cold glass of milk and a big slice of cake sitting in a rocker on the front porch sounds good to me.

Love the picture of Todd watching...

  40. I'm so glad that CarrieAnn was okay. I've been awol because life has gone temporarily insane. But, I am so glad to come back and see that your biggest problem is that you have a huge chocolate cake to eat! I can come over and help!

  41. i would so have a piece right now. I am craving chocolate for some reason lately. Maybe its the nerves. I have been in the dumps lately. Last weekend Roscoe was limping so we took him to the vet and they told us they saw a growth on his elbow. The said it could be 3 things, merca, arthritis or cancer. I am praying it is not cancer and ask if yo could pray that he will be OK. He is only 4.
Have fun with the dogs and indulge yourself with the yummy chocolate cake.
