Does Annie Know?

Annie, who will be 14 in just a couple of weeks came into the rescue because her owner had stage 4 cancer.    He was no longer able to care for her, and wanted to make sure she would be cared for after he passed.  Since Annie came to us, I've heard from him a few times, asking how she was doing.  Of course I'd respond back and always include the newest picture of her. Knowing how difficult it was for him to give Annie up, and with his declining health, I always let him initiate the contact. I've not heard from him since late summer.

A couple of weeks ago, in the middle of the night I was awakened by Annie. We keep a small night-lite on and in the shadows I could see that she was standing in the doorway of the bedroom.  She was looking down the hallway and was wagging her tail and whining.  What she was doing would have normally gotten the attention of the other dogs, but this time it didn't.  I watched her and fell back to sleep.  I'd forgotten all about that until this morning when I received an e-mail from the son of Annie's former owner, (who was always included in the e-mails) telling me that his father had passed away a few weeks ago. Coincidence?  Perhaps. But I have to wonder, does Annie know?

  1. Oh wow, I am sure she felt something. They say dogs have that natural instinct. She is beautiful. How sweet of you and Carl to have been able to adopt her and care for her. You are definitely an Angel. TFS> ana

  7. Yes, she does know. Their senses are so much greater than ours (us dog owners all know that don't we). Reminds me of a time here when our William was about two years old. Family came to visit and we are all in the hall greeting each other...well, long story short and bear in mind the atmosphere was very happy, William had jumped up to say hello to everyone. Then he turned and jumped up at Thin Air, just as he had with the actual people. To this day Kim, I am convinced he 'saw' another family member who has passed over but to William he thought they were actually there. I shall always be convinced there were more people with us than we could 'see'.

I won't mention the 'orbs' I actually 'saw' the other night!

  11. I think she knows and I also think she knows how much you care about her and how good it is that she is living with you now.

And I like these gray colors for the winter. Very calming and just the right shades.

  15. Oh Kim, I truly believe that Annie knows. I just picture him whispering goodbye to her and that they will see each other again, it brings tears just thinking about it. I'm so glad Annie is there with you and Carl, and she also knows how much she is loved. What a sweet story. Hugs to sweet Annie!

  16. Maybe his ghost had to see her one last time before he crossed over and she saw him . It is known that animals can see and sense ghosts and that ghosts will do this for peace of mind so they can cross over ! I am sorry to hear her owner passed away though but he will be able to watch her from above and enjoy her that way all over again ! Have a good day !

  20. I like to agree with some of the others that Annie was visited by her owners spirit before he crossed over. He wanted to see that she was doing well and to remind her he loved her very much.

  23. Kim,
I am sure that Annie saw someone, don’t know if you ever read the posts I wrote about Lucy the ghost that we share our old house with. Our pack always let us know when she is near.

  24. Annie would know, he was there. maybe to say one last farewell. You will share grief with her, but be happy that Annie was with you, told you, and you will heal from this together. Our cats and your dogs know far more than we could ever imagine, that extra sense that gives them an insight into what we cannot see. Cheers from Jean

  26. I'm sure she did know and that her owner was there with her at that moment. He walked up to her, petted her and told her that he would be waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge.

  27. At the exact moment that my mother died - in a hospital - the neighbors reported that the dogs went nuts - barking, howling, carrying on. I think dogs know...

  28. I am sure she knows. They say dogs SEE dead people!! I don't put anything past a dog. They are amazing.

  30. Yes, they know. Don't ask me how, but they do. One day in January 1998 I was having a cup of tea and watching the news. Suddenly my cockatiel, Buddy, started screaming. He wasn't just being a noisy cockatiel, he was screaming at the top of his lungs and wouldn't stop. I talked to him but he wouldn't calm down. I covered him and he continued to scream for about twenty minutes. Seconds after he stopped, the phone rang and my brother told me that our mother had died. Buddy knew.

  31. I believe that Annie most certainly was greeting her former owner and companion as he stopped by to say goodbye for the moment! Animals are so special!
I have missed you Kim (and the gang) and am slowly making my way back to Blogger for the New Year.

  33. Kim, This brought tears to my eyes-how very comforting for Annie and for you. I've heard stories like that too but never experienced them. May Annie's day be filled with tail wags and joy as she spends her time with you. Again, I do think you are an angel sent for these dear pups.

  35. I totally think dogs know…they are so sensitive and sometimes know things before we do.

I know for a fact they are tuned into the spiritual side of things (as opposed to the natural.)

    What a beautiful story.

  36. He probably stopped by to be sure Annie was doing well.
    *hugs* ♥

  37. I think the old mans spirit was so connected with Annie--- that he definatly stopped by one more time- because I am sure her footprints were imprinted all over his heart.

  38. I'm not a mystical person but I've had an experience where I "knew" that someone close to me had passed. I feel sure that Annie knew, and I'm so glad that she's in a loving home with you.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sounds like many of us have had experiences with recently deceased spirits hanging around for a last goodbye. We're sure Annie's prior owner was very grateful that his Annie has such a safe and loving home until it is time for her to join him. He was spared the added pain of having to worry about her, thanks to you.

  40. A very touching post, Kim, along with wonderful responses... and yes, I am one of the believers too. There are many stories that describe this kind of thing, cats or dogs who can tell when someone is dying, near or far away. I am so happy that Annie was with you.

    Blessings on all!

  41. Oh yea, she knows (knew).
There is another dimension that humans are too close minded to be able to keep that frequency open at all times. Dogs don't have that problem. They know.

  42. I love this. She knows and I'm sure that he came to see her. : )
    So sweet.

  43. They know more than we know.

I thought of your gentle, caring, above-and-beyond self just two days after Christmas when I laid my childhood pony to rest. She was 38 years old. We'd been together 31 years.

    They know.

  44. Angel Kim, I am sure she knows!!!
He came that night to say good-bye to her!!

Thanks for your visit dear friend!!

  45. Yes she knew. Dogs, as do some people, have an ability to 'pick up on' energy around them and respond accordingly when something changes about that energy.

A few weeks ago one of Sophie's dads was not feeling well at all. She sensed this and went to him and just sat with him not looking for a thing.

My father is 96 and Sophie met him when he was 90. From day one she sensed he couldn't play with her like we did....she is very gentle and slow when she is with him.

So yes I think dogs are more intuned than most humans.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dogs have amazing intuition - gave me chills reading this. Poor girl, I'm so happy she found you. :)

  47. What an amazing story. We feel Annie must have known. It must have given her sick owner great comfort to know she is so well loved and cared for.
No worries, and love, Carol (and Stella and Rory)

  48. Oh she knows.
I have interesting stories of dogs and what they see and 'know' that we humans don't.
We can learn much from our animals.

  49. I believe that she does know!! I believe he was stopping by to wish her love...and to thank you as well. As Noreen said, you are an angel for these wonderful pups. Hugs to Annie. She could not have found a better family.

  51. I totally think that Annie has some connection to her owner. If he cared so much to think ahead and plan for her future when he was so ill, there is a huge connection.

What a sad day for both of them.

  52. She knew. Dogs feel things that we cannot ... only by watching them carefully can we even get an inkling of the wonders that they see. What a wonderful story. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

  53. Poor Annie! Bless her heart. I'm sure the animal knew when her owner passed away. The love a dog has for its owner is incredible. These dogs are so sweet and sensitive. Annie is such a beautiful animal. I'm so glad she has a good home with people who love her.

  54. I'd have to say she knew. Sweet, innocent souls, they can see so much more than we can.

  57. That is just so touching and I am sure that Annie did know as I think dogs are so in tune with their owners. I'm sure he passed by to see her on his way out. :)
