The New Neighbors

~A contented Cissy~
I've not mentioned that last year the 10 acres that adjoins our property was sold.  The same person also purchased 10 acres that adjoins it to the south.  In August, construction started on a house. I'll reserve my thoughts about how I think it's strange that what I think (??) is the front door of the house facing us to the north, and not west as all the homes on our side of the road do to take in the view of the mountains and face the road.  We can see the house, and with the electricity now turned on, I can see its lights at night from our back porch.  I know it's really trivial and petty, but given that they have 20 acres to build a house on, I was bothered that I can see the house, and now its lights at all.  But it's just that in the 8 years we've lived here, I've gotten used to the darkness and the privacy as well.
But then it occurred to me, sound really does travel here in the country.  And now I wonder if they're going to be bothered that there's not going to be a shortage of dogs barking that they probably will be able to hear.  *Of all of our dogs, who do you think barks the most?
The lights being visible and dogs barking aren't going to change, so I'm thinking that if the new neighbors are bothered by it, maybe it makes us even.

  1. Hello, it seems they could have built the house further back and out of sight. Will they even be able to tell where the barking is coming from? Cissy and Todd are beautiful as always. Happy Thursday, enjoy your day!

  2. Yes, Even I would say ...and I cannot imagine who barks the most, not this sweet little guy surely!!

    Aroo to you,

  4. It could get interesting. Are they moved in yet? Do they have dogs? You should hear it around here some nights. (My two, the nearest neighbor's five, two across the road and down a piece, and a passel of hounds on the next hill - all 'threatening' some coyotes - it is a trifle bothersome) I also have yard lights breaking up my scenery.

  5. Two large pieces of property down the road from us have been broken up into subdivisions. One of the first houses built has porch lights and yard lights on every night. Thank goodness it's far enough away from us that it doesn't affect our dark, country sky. It's just a matter of time before one of the future new houses does, though.

    I understand how you feel.

  7. Amazing. We have neighbors who have a lot next to them and the new owners put up the only multi-story edifice around. They built it 10 feet from the property line and the neighbors have to look at gray wall instead of mountain views. It's a garage for his car collection and he didn't build it near his house. He has five acres to not bother anyone else.

  9. Neighbors can go either way, good or bad. Take them some cookies and maybe you will become best friends? As far as the lights perhaps you could build something to block the light from your porch like a trellis or a few spruce trees placed just so. It is always a huge disappointment when these things happen but maybe if they become your friends it will shine a better "Light" on things?

  10. Sorry to hear that it looks as though your neighbour's lights will be intrusive. We have dusk to dawn censors on all our outdoor lights, and so far, in the many years we've lived here, no one has complained. They are quite pleased that our gate lights illuminate the roadway for quite a distance, as we have no street lighting. They are also quite happy when our dogs bark - which thankfully isn't often unless there are strangers about - so we're lucky. Who could possibly complain after they have met your crew, Kim !

  11. I know how you feel, someone built on the hill across from us - facing us?? and especially in the Winter I can see it and their lights, I know it should not have bothered me either, but now I sit on my porch and there it is, ruining my nice view of the previous pasture! I would think that they have heard the dogs while building....hopefully they are dog lovers....and if not....no reason to even know them :)

  13. Todd just has more to say. Well, the dogs were there first! Maybe you should put in lots of screening plants.

  14. Yes, we were the only new home in the area some 28 years ago, and then before you know it, others built. I like the silence of the countryside, sounds travel far, especially those loud diesel truck engines and dueled-out mufflers.

  15. Afternoon, To bad they built so close, I would not like that either Kim. That's what dogs do, bark!!!! Blessings Francine.

  16. That's unfortunate that they built so close! If I were them, I would have built further in on the property so that I could have my privacy with all that space! Anyhow, if they're bothered by your lights and the dogs barking, they can always put up a stand of trees, they cut the sound and block the light!

  17. Its sad Kim, that this happened to your beautiful world. The privacy and solitude of Golden Pines has been invaded. I am imagining how much you have dreaded seeing this alien looking house being developed right there so close to you. Why couldn't they have built further away!! And how crazy for them to have their door facing you! Its sickening..
Well, you and all the goldens at Golden Pines wee there first!!! So dont worry about the barking.. Its even steven!
I hope there are some trees that grow fast to block your view of their lights.
We understand how you feel, and we are so sorry.

  18. We are getting a new neighbour to our left. The house is 2 acres away but we also feel the invasion feeling (we have a winter of construction). We can hardly see the place, but still. Hopefully the neighbours will be great.

  20. I would be very upset!
I live in town and the neighbors houses are very close to mine.
    I hate it.
and if I moved to the country and then one day had someone block my view, I'd be so frustrated.
But, just like you, my biggest worry would be about my dogs.
My friend that lives in the country told me that there are dogs just running loose and she is always concerned about them coming onto her property and messing with hers.
I wish you luck and hopefully they will be good people and soon good friends!

  21. i say they can put up with todd if you can put up with the lighted cathedral.
maybe they'll turn out to be dog lovers too!
    YAYYY! go little todd! speak!

  22. Such a shame that your peace and quiet has been invaded. I agree that it's surprising they built there when they have so much land. Hope they don't plan to make a development. Ugh.

  23. A 10 acre lot near us was built on over the past year. I feel the same way as you - like it's a huge invasion (although we can't see their house or lights). You are not going to believe our biggest problem with them - they go through phases when they don't use their indoor toilet. I'll leave it to you to imagine how much this affected us as our disgusting Labs ran off to find the smelly stuff. Other people called the county on them, which fixed things for a while, but it still happens now and then. I cannot believe that we are having this particular problem in a 1st world country!

This issue has been the impetus for a huge increase in our training so that we can *always* control our dogs. Fortunately, it has worked... Shyla will run right past their lot next to my bike without going to investigate.

I hope that your new neighbors turn out to be good neighbors, even if their lights and invasion of your privacy bug you.

  24. Our neighbors have to put up with our dogs and donkeys, but at times we listen to their noises. And it all works out. I hope they are nice people and you end up living in perfect harmony.
