A Decision for Reggie

The Lady, her dog Scruffy and her friend arrived early. During our visit, I did my best to not like the Lady and try to talk her out of liking Reggie/Sherlock.
But I realized about an hour after she was here, that in many ways she was like me in how she felt and cared about her dogs.  And as hard as I tried, and believe me I tried, I felt I had to give her a chance at giving Reggie a forever home.
~The Lady and her friend walking Reggie~
It may not have been what was best for me, because I'd gotten quite attached to the dog that hardly wagged his tail, who followed me everywhere and often rested his head on my knee. But Reggie trusted me from the first day I met him in November to keep him safe and make the best decisions for him.  And I felt that The Lady should have the chance to make the same best decisions for him too.
~Reggie, the first day we met~
I promised The Lady that I would take Reggie back if it didn't work out and I let Lab Rescue know that too. All I can do now is hope that it goes well, and keep the door open just in case.

Letting Reggie go today has been harder than I thought it would be.  I will and do really miss him.

But the e-mail that's below, that I received from Lab Rescue just a few minutes ago, and a voice mail has helped.
So far, so good with Sherlock.   He made it home and was getting settled at Linda’s house.  It appears Scruffy is underfoot a bit, but, is surviving too.   The big test will come when they are left alone.  Who knows....they may do pretty well!   Linda use to raise dogs and is still very busy with dogs in many functions.    I know she will provide a great place for Sherlock.  I will keep you informed with Sherlock’s status.   I did ask for photos once they were settled so I could share them with you!
Take care and I will for sure keep you informed!
Carol

  1. It's so hard to let them go, but this may be a perfect match. I have always stayed in touch with my foster families and my puppy homes and they all became friends. Good luck.

  6. Letting go is so hard, but if " The Lady" is any way part as caring and loving as you are, your darling boy will have a new home full of the TLC and more you gave.. What a caring email, and voice mail too, that shows loving kindness in people's hearts.

  7. I do hope that "The Lady" loves Reggie as much as you (and we) did. You've trusted your instinct, and I'm sure it won't let you down. Labs are generally pretty tolerant dogs, so he will be a good companion, and friend, to Scruffy.

  9. I am sure there was nobody better to care for Reggie than you, but if Linda can give him the love and attention that you do, he will be in a good place.

  10. I truly admire you for the work that you do. There is a lot of loss for you frequently and it must be so hard, yet rewarding. I am sure Reggie will do well with his new home and that it opens a spot in your home for another rescue in need. Keep on the awesome job that you do.

  11. I hope Reggie will be happy in his new home and get along well with his new fur sibling. It's scenarios like this that keep me from being able to foster. I would have to keep them all.

  13. not sure why he had to go...
but i'm thinking that if he did... a forever home with just one other furry might be a good thing.
he will soon feel alright. his face when you met him was proof of his resilience! trying not to see his face in the next and read too much into it.
bless carol for knowing you'll need to know and SEE for yourself how he's doing. and bless you dear bean.

  14. By the sounds of it she and Sherlock/Reggie and Scruffy will all get along well and all will be happy . I hope it goes well . I couldn't do what you do , I would get attached to the dogs to much and I couldn't let them go with some one else to live , one reason I don't foster I would have hundreds of dogs lol ! Thanks for sharing , lovely photos , Keep us informed when you can . Have a good week !

  20. Letting fosters go is SO HARD. But, at least you got to let him go to someone you trust is a good dog-mom. It wasn't some sketchy person you were on the fence about. Sounds like Reggie will have a nice home, and he can always come back to you if it doesn't work out.

    You do good things.

  21. Did Todd approve the Lady because if he did you don't have to worry, Reggie will be just fine.

  26. If she takes care of animals like you do, he is in great hands and it gives you the opportunity to help another one. And if it doesn't work, he can always come back. Love your blog!

  29. I was struck with how much your letting go of rescues is like children growing up and leaving home. You hope like heck they will thrive, but a little part of you wishes they still needed you a little. Hope he does well with his new home.

  32. You have a heart of gold. Reggie is so lucky to have you watching over him, always there if things don't work out. But, maybe they will. I'm glad you gave him this chance with a heart so full of love.

  33. Reggie is a beautiful boy and I can see why you hated to let him go, not sure I could let go. I hope he finds his forever home and if not comes back to you.
