A Dog First!

Last week is in our rearview mirror, and a new week is ready to begin.
Deizel had his eyes evaluated, and its been decided to not remove the cataracts. For one, surgery to remove them is very expensive.  Second and what counts the most, is that Deizel has adapted to being blind.  I was reminded in an article that I read, that Deizel is a dog first, and blind second. I've been putting his blindness first.  But yesterday when I watched him run along the fence with Todd as Carl mowed the grass on the other side, it put things into the right order -- Deizel is a dog first.

This past week also has Josh on a medication that we've been talking about trying for a few months.  It's called "Adequan" and it's used to control symptoms associated with degenerative or traumatic arthritis -- Which is what Josh has.  It's an expensive medication initially because it requires 8 injections.  But we've been able to offset the cost because of the gifts from two kind blogging friends. I am hopeful it will help make a difference in his ability to get up by himself.
Speaking of getting around, today marks a milestone. It is exactly two-hundred days since Jake left the shelter and arrived here at Golden Pines.  He could not be getting around any better, and we could not be happier for how well he's doing, and how happy he is.
~Jake, 200 days and counting!~
Of course thrown into the week there's always the comic relief of Todd. I found a snakeskin in our yard a couple of days ago.
It made me a little squeamish, but it didn't stop me from showing it to Todd and Charlie who were curious about it.  And well, as is obvious in the video, Todd surprised me at the end, and gave me a good laugh.

I hope you've had a good weekend!

  2. My elderly setter was having issues getting up and down, so we did the Adequan regimen too - it worked miracles! The very next day after the first injection she was getting around fine. After the first 8, we did 1 a week for a while, then stopped. She's been fine for many months since...

  5. You are so right. Sometimes we need to step back and realize that they are dogs first and go from there. Warms my heart every time I see Jake living a happy life there with all of you. Love Todd and the snakeskin. Of course that's exactly what he would do. He is a terrier first.

  6. Typical terrier. Unafraid of things that are scary and skittish about things that aren't.

  7. We used to have a blind dog (cataracts again) in our street, he escaped one day and my peeps took him in to keep him safe. Within 5 mins he'd sorted out the room and wondered around pawfectly fine as if he'd always lived there...my peeps were amazed at how well and how quickly he adapted

  12. Dear Deizel demonstrates what marvelous coping powers dogs have. They make the adjustments and go on with life. What a lesson to be learned there. I so hope that the Adequan will make a wonderful difference for Josh.

  17. Mom has found a few snake skins but she gets rid of them before we can see them.

One of the hardest things to do is remember that they think as a dog, more simply then we think and in the present. When Samba was dying, a friend reminded me that she didn't know she was terminally ill, she only knew that I loved her and she'd had a good life. It made it easier for me to let go.

  18. It's so good to see how happy all your dogs look, Kim. Wonderful photos - Jake looks pleased with himself, Deizel doesn't seem too worried that he can't see, and Todd is once again showing us how fearless he is ! Not forgetting the last photo of Charlie and his double !

  20. Kim,
First, i apoolgize for not extending my condolences concerning sweet Sheba earlier. I will always remember seeing her backside burrowing into the blackberry bushes! the last couple of years. So cute!
Jake looks so wonderful, so happy, so good to see. His harness reminded me of Gus. I can't believe it has been over a year already. He was such a big presence in your home. Sweet boy.
The video of Charlie and Todd is priceless.
Beautiful first picture. Everything is still so green. By this time of the summer everyting is usually brown here, but we are having lots of rain and much lower temperatures. So unusual for Texas.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  30. We've given Adequan to R for years, and I think it makes a difference for him. BTW, it is especially expensive right now due to a manufacturing problem. It is usually expensive but not as expensive as now. Our vet gave us a "donated" vial from a dog who had passed away so we wouldn't have to pay the current prices (R has to have weekly injections for 6 months post-surgery). I hope it helps Josh!
