Every Day is National Dog Day

Living in a small town that has its own Facebook page has its advantages.  Today a town resident asked if anyone would like their surplus of tomatoes and green beans from their garden. Several people have posted similar questions to the group over the past few weeks, but I've never responded quick enough to be the recipient of this freebie. Today, my luck changed and I got about 20 beautiful ripe tomatoes, and a grocery bag full of green beans.  I was so grateful and excited to have the fresh vegetables!  But I knew I'd been given more than we needed.  So, when I passed a friends house and saw that she was home, I decided to turn around and share them with her and her family.  Like me, she really appreciated the generosity of a local gardener.  There's nothing like fresh vegetables!

Today was also the day that Max saw the orthopedic surgeon for a consultation.
~Max waiting his turn~
The good news is that the x-rays showed that Max has great hips.  Unfortunately, the news for his knee wasn't that good.  He has a torn ACL on his left knee. I have to say, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.  Everyone who has seen him has agreed that he favors it.
The surgeon is recommending a TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy). Since Max is a "foster dog" the board of the rescue will decide what the next step will be.  I have no reason whatsoever to think the surgery won't be approved. At 6-years old, Max is a relatively young dog, with (hopefully) many good and active years ahead.

As this week comes to an end, as many of you may know, it's National Dog Day.  Sunny (below) doesn't care what day it is, he wanted away from the camera and back inside.
~Jake, Cissy and camera shy Sunny~
But the day was created "to celebrate all breeds, pure and mixed and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues."

I think that description means that at our house every day is National Dog Day.

  1. Fresh veggies always taste so good compared to supermarket bought..lucky you. Hugs to all the crew..waving from over the pond.

  2. Glad you were able to get some fresh veggies! There sure is a difference in taste! We haven't been able to get many this has been so hot and dry here that many of the gardens just didn't produce. Happy National Dog Day! I your house it is every day! Hope all works out well for the surgery.

  3. This was the week that we got the most tomatoes at the food pantry. The generosity of people has been overwhelming. Although my gardens did not do well this year, I still had enough to give to family and neighbors. It is good to share the bounty of our labor.

The pictures of the dogs are heartwarming and Max is just adorable.

  4. Hello, Happy National Dog Day. The tomatoes look delicious, I love tomato sandwiches. I hope all goes well for Max. All of the furbabies are so cute, I miss having a dog. Happy weekend to all of you!

  5. amen. you have such a loving, generous home and heart.

  6. I have scored some great produce from the lovely ladies I work with who have a bounty!
I hope that Max's surgery is approved.
Wishing all your pups the best on National Dog Day!

  7. We feel the same way about National Dog Day. Every day in this house is a celebration of dogs. So what did you make with all those veggies?

  8. if ever anybody epitomizes dog day it's YOU!
    and golden pines!
    long may you wave. :D
and those vegetables are almost too beautiful to eat!

  9. We have to agree that every day is Dog Day, at least it seems that way here:) Mom would love to have some fresh tomatoes and green beans like that. She has one tomato plant in a smart pot on the deck, but this year it didn't do so well. Only about 4 or 5 tomatoes so far. Probably too much rain at the wrong time and too much sun at the wrong time:( Oh well, there is always next year.

  10. Oh I love getting some of the bounty from my friend who has a garden. She just brought me some tomatoes last week and green beans before that. Like you, I am so grateful! Happy Happy Belated National Dog Day!!!! DakotasDen

  11. Always love to share a moment with all your wonderful friends and family members.

  12. Such a great post. Those tomatoes and green beans look picture perfect and I bet they taste wonderful, too. I'm thinking some of the pups might benefit from them, too!
Glad, Max's hips are good, but sorry about the surgery. I hope the recovery goes well for him.
How good it is to see Cissy's little sugar face. Hope she is doing well. And, Jake, he is just happy to be alive, love that smile! just happy to see an occasional glimpse of Sunny.
Looks like it is a nice weekend at Golden Pines. You made me smile with this sweet post.

  13. Our Miggs had that knee surgery for the same as her knee kept slipping out of its socket and she had pulled the tendons as well that was 4 years ago and you would never know as she runs so fast and hard thankful it has done really well for her . Hope all goes well . I must get back to home grown veggies of our own again as I do love them , we get ours from a local veggie farmer that also works with hubs , your veggies look soo yummy . Lovely photos . Thanks for sharing , Have a good weekend !

  14. Our dogs LOVE green beans and get some every day. Kyla (the green bean queen) just may come back from the dead to get some garden-fresh green beans.

  15. For sure . . .
You get the prize for National Dog Day!

  16. Max is such a lovely dog and otherwise so healthy. I'm sure his surgery will be approved and successful. If I were even remotely thinking of another dog, I go for him myself.

Yes, the fresh veggies have been such a treat. We almost forget how good they are until summer comes around again. Lucy loves most of them but green beans are her favorites.

  17. Yea everyday is dog day around here too! We usually grow some squash but did not this year - I am going to miss it this fall.
