Rhett Arrives at Golden Pines

We round the corner to the end of what has been a hectic and busy week.  Carl has been out of town, and when he returned, we had out of town company.
~Crossing the bridge to Maryland~
And, to make sure there was no extra spare time, we welcomed a new addition named Rhett.  He comes to us from the very distant town of Lynchburg Virginia.
Rhett is a very handsome and very big 12 year old boy that has been diagnosed with epilepsy.  From the rescue I received this information about his past life:
"Owner got Rhett from a friend who was unable to care for him. The previous owner got Rhett from a shelter and only had him about 6 months, Rhett had been in several homes before the previous owner - it seems like people didn’t know why he was having seizures and rather than trying to find out people gave him up."
Rhett has been given to the rescue because his last owner is expecting a baby, and is unable to pay for his needed medications.  Unfortunately, one of the medications he's been taking did not come with him.  I am hoping that until we are able to have Rhett seen by the vet, he'll be okay, and he won't have any seizures.

On the flip side, our dogs like Rhett.
Todd (below) of course has given his opinion of what he thinks about him...
But my attempts to keep Rhett away from our dogs so he could settle in, didn't work. Several times, I turned around and he was behind me.
I could see that he was okay with our crew, who are either too worn out from meeting new arrivals, or they are just used to newcomers.  Maybe it's both.

Either way, I am looking forward to the chance to get to know Rhett and have him as part of our lives.

  7. Oh, another beautiful boy to join the crew, so glad they like him. I hope that the right meds can soon stabilise his epilepsy - he's too handsome a chap to suffer. He's had such a troubled past, now he can settle down in a loving home.

  9. Poor fellow, given up because of his seizures. Just when he needs his people most, they give up on him. I'm glad he found you and can get the help and support he needs. My Mackey has seizures and we wouldn't think of turning our backs on her. Todd's reaction cracked me up. Fudge would do that.

  10. How sad that Rhett has gone through so many homes. Yet epilepsy can be challenging. I don't want to seem as if I'm telling you something you probably already don't know, but it's dangerous to go without an epilepsy medication without stepping down the dosage carefully. Going cold turkey can cause the dangerous status epilepticus, which the Epilepsy Foundation defines as a seizure that lasts too long or when seizures come so quickly there's no recovery time between them. This can even if you were not taking these medications because of a seizure disorder. For example, I took anti-seizure medications because of trigeminal neuralgia and was warned sternly by my neurologist about the dangers of missing dosages when they were first prescribed. One of my goldens was on two different epilepsy medications due to epilepsy, and I was given the same warning about her. You might consider calling the shelter foundation's vet and asking for enough medication to tide you over until the visit. And now I'll stop butting in long enough to thank you for all you do.

  11. There must be a curse on all of us commenting today. I'm not even going to correct my mistakes because I'd probably make more. Proofreading seems impossible since brain surgery last year.

  13. Welcome Rhett. What a chequered past, poor boy. Fingers and paws crossed his seizures can be controlled. Sounds like he'll just slot right in with the others.

  16. Handsome Rhett!!! At least we know that he has finally arrived in a great place. We know all too well the difficulties of seizures, but we hope the medication can keep him seizure-free. Thank you for giving him a place to be loved.

  23. Rhett looks like such a big lovable sweetie! I wish that I could FedEx you some meds for Rhett! I actually made Shyla a tag that says what meds she gets in case she ever gets separated from us. I'm a bit on the paranoid side, you might say.

Todd can carry two balls! Wow!! Perhaps one of your many goldens taught him that trick :)

Lots of love and hugs to Rhett, who I've fallen for almost instantly.
