George Returns to Golden Pines

Saturday was the day I arranged to get George picked up from Paul's brother. I really wanted to make it easy for the brother, so I drove over an hour to get there, to an area of Maryland that I'd never been to before.
~Sykesville Maryland~
George was happy to see me, and wouldn't stop barking. In fact, for the first 20 minutes of our drive home, all he did was bark and shove his head under my arm. It was really good to see him!  ...not so much to hear him though.
Unfortunately, about 20 minutes into our drive home, I had car/van trouble again. It was the same issue I'd had in February.  Not knowing the area, thankfully I was able to make it to a shopping center, I'd passed on my way to pick up George, where I was able to safely park. Having done this before, and because we have an "extended warranty" I called and a tow truck to take my van to a dealership closer to home was arranged.
~Here we go again....~
I will fast forward through the snags caused by the (less than competent) man I had initially spoken to, because the next person on the phone was totally sympathetic, and helpful (she could hear George barking) and she solved those issues for me. Carl and the tow truck showed up at about the same time and six hours later, we were safely home. What an afternoon!

I read recently that dogs have associative memory, remembering people, places, and experiences based on their associations they have with them. I totally believe that. George has settled right back in, even remembering where he used to eat, and I'm so glad to report that he's not barking much at all.
So, whatever is ahead for George -- Lab Rescue has said they'll help to find him a new home if needed -- George is going to be just fine.
Welcome back George!

  3. I think George will be with you forever, he has that look that says " I love being here" and what a decision to make, we all know that doing what is best for any dog or cat can be so hards for the owner. We cannot drive anywhere out of our own area right now, in fact one man has gone to jail for doing that, he received several warnings, then was put inside. George, be happy.XXX

  8. You are so good and helpful and then the van breaks down. What a long day. George looked tired, as I'm sure you were too.

  9. There isn't much worse than car breaking down when you're far from home. Lucky for you that George is an experienced camper.

  11. Car trouble is no fun, especially when you are in an unfamiliar area. We are glad it all worked out OK.

We are also happy that George and his brother got to spend some time with their owner, but we are so very happy that George has been able to return to stay with you. His easy re-adaptation just shows how good you are to your furries. Hugs for all you do.

  12. George looks so happy to be back with you. His barking was just him trying to tell you how pleased he was. He must feel that he's come home, and remembers that being with you, and the crew, was the place where he felt safe.

  13. Oh my word, Kim! What a labor (of love?) to bring George "home". Now you know that's what you did, don't you? :-D George is home and that's where he'll stay. *LOL* Maybe I'm dreaming but I just have a hunch that boy is meant to be with you. I sure wish I lived close-by, my friend... because I'd love to give a good home to one of the dogs in your rescue. We have rescues enough around here so that's where our next dog will come from.... but having one of yours would be special indeed. Love, Andrea xoxo

  14. Oh my goodness. I thought that town looked familiar. We used to live in PA and drive down to that town to use a animal chiropractor. It was an 1 1/2 hour drive but worth it for my dog's health. What a small world.

  15. Oh my, Kim, things do change at Golden Pines. Hello again, sweet George. May he continue to settle in nicely. I'm sorry that it didn't work out with Paul. And I hope that Gino is okay, too. My guess is that he had a bad fright in the garage.

  19. Oh, when you first said how he barked in the car, I thought "oh no, my hope wasn't right!" so I'm glad to hear he's been quieter at home. So sorry that your trip to get him didn't go so well!
We lease a new vehicle every three years, because I got tired of being stranded!
