A Crescendo

With Christmas on Tuesday, the week began quietly.  But its volume started to increase, and on Thursday it hit a crescendo.  Work on the new roof for our barn began last weekend.  Carl stayed home from work on Thursday to finish taking off the old roof before the roofer returned to put the new one on.  His doing this without anyone around caused me some concern, but Carl assured me he'd be 'just fine' and there was no need to worry.  However, worrying is one of the things I do best, so of course that's what I did.  Mid-morning the worries really came to the surface when I received a call from Carl telling me he'd slipped on some ice and had fallen off the roof of the barn--Three hours later Carl and I are leaving the hospital, he is on crutches with a cast on his left foot that is broken.  We are very, very grateful that this was the 'only' injury--We all know that when someone falls two stories, it can be much worse. However, unlike when you fall off a bicycle and you get back on, Carl will not be getting back onto the roof of our barn!

With that, the volume on the week quieted again.  Snow has been falling off and on all day.
While Carl sat with his foot propped up, the dogs and I spent time outdoors.  Wendy even came outside with us.
Toby sampled  the snow...
And no matter the weather, Josh is always ready to play frisbee ...
It really brought out the puppy in Annie, and she chased after Sheba.
At 14 years old, Annie is such a lady and I couldn't help but enjoy watching her and all the dogs play in the snow!
I hope you've enjoyed your Saturday too!

  1. Sounds like it's time for every one to just sit down and leave stuff alone, at least the pups are enjoying the weather!

  5. Yes indeed, Carl was very fortunate to have only a broken foot...which too must be painful!
I love to see a family of dogs enjoying the outdoors like this....reminds me of when Sophie was at daycare.

  6. Hmm, I kinda had a feeling when you took that picture of Carl on the barn roof... all I can say is... MEN! I hope he heals quickly.

It's nice to see the kids out playing in the snow. Good to see that Wendy was up to joining you!

We have had infinitesimal flurries all day, doing nothing.

  7. Sorry to hear about Carol. I always tell MOM, "Don't go up there on the roof without another human around." And that is good advise for all humans. I hope he heals up quick like. The pups seem to be liking the snow, me too. All my best for you and your pack for the new year.
    Blessings,

  9. Hey Golden Pines Gang, Jet here. Hi Miss Kim.

OMD, NO! Please give Mr. Carl manly man Jetty kisses and JJ hugs for a speedy quick recovery and... may I say manly man to manly man... dude... you always need a buddy when doing dangerous stuff like that... or... a harness???

Mom asked me to share that the Gang looks so happy playing in the snow... she said she would be so curious to see what Little Miss Tropics and I would do!

I'm glad your week finally settled down though, I hope your New Year is quiet and peaceful.

  25. Forget that roof stuff Carl! So sorry you fell off the roof and broke your foot. I would imagine that the rest of your body is pretty sore too.

The dogs sure look happy in the snow.

  26. I am a worrier like you too as I can't leave a male climbing trees with a chain saw alone! I hope Carls recovery goes well.

I love the pictures of snow as I am here in the New Zealand summer with the air conditioning on trying to get cool, and looking at my two golden retrievers (also lying under the air-con) in their fur coats, wondering how they cope.

    With best wishes for 2013,

  38. Love to see the dogs romping in the snow. Sorry to hear of Carl's injury. He and my husband must be related. There are times I just have to walk away and hope to God I don't hear the cry for help (after the accident)

  39. I've learned that when husbands say "don't worry I can do it", it's usually time to start worrying.

We had a tiny taste of snow. Just enough to make us want more.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

  40. I know exactly what Carl is all about, Kim...I'm a climber too. So I guess I should heed your story and leave tree pruning alone etc....I will I promise.

  49. Oh poor Carl. Our neighbor slipped off a ladder painting the second story of his house and he had some sever injuries. Broken arm, shoulder, and back injury. I am glad Carl's injuries were not worse. I hope he is up and about soon.

Beautiful pictures of dogs in the snow.

  50. My goodness - that is a very scary story about Carl. I, too, am incredibly thankful that he "only" broke his foot.

Our best friends had a similar situation. The husband went up on the roof while his wife was out. In his case, the ladder was blown down by a big gust of wind. He didn't have his cell phone (to call us or anyone) so he spent hours waiting on the roof for his wife to come home.

I'm glad that your pack got to play in the snow. I hope that Carl has a speedy recovery and the pain is letting up.

  51. Dear Kim, From my heart to yours, wishes for a healthy and sweet New Year. I love seeing your dogs play in the snow, reminds me of Hunter. He loves to eat it, rub his face and ears in it and just play. Loved seeing the snow on Todd-such great photos Kim. I pray Carl's foot heals quickly. My fil and bil have fallen off a roof and broken bones, so I am very concerned when John gets on the roof. Hope the snow continues and you have a wonderful day!
